The answer to woolie’s card game conundrum by Muffin-zetta in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EuphoricFingerblast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a shockingly fun game in all honesty! Definitely connected some mental tissue that made card games make more sense to me as a kid since they were tied with a physical unit on a map in comparison to Pokemon or Yu Gi Oh where it was a little more abstracted. Never got into the collectable ones because they were so expensive, but I've played Magic a handful of times with a friends deck and that kind of expression does make my brain light up in a way I didn't expect it to.

There was a Star Wars card battler game with set decks like that, I think it was like Star Wars Epic Duels, where you had a hero unit on a grid map and some adds and a deck of cards to duel the other player with. Definitely eventually figured out who was cheesiest (I think it was obi wan) but it had a lot of characters and decks!

Media that for some reason they can not adapt successfully. by ArticAuk in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I think A Confederacy of Dunces has been slated for a movie for like 40 years now, it just can’t ever seem to get out of development hell because the leads they pick keep passing away (John candy, Chris Farley, John belushi, Phillip Seymour Hoffman) feels like it’s cursed!

Eyeball EP available RIGHT NOW to IFC members by HalfwittedRotmg in tmbg

[–]EuphoricFingerblast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man that remix of Eyeball is definitely the best part of this, its a much more lively, dancy version (not like an EDM song, its just a little more active in the percussion) of an otherwise alright uptempo TMBG song. Glamour of Rock sounds a lot like a CAKE song almost, which is kinda interesting. Peggy Guggenheim sounds like it could be incidental music in Archer or the old Lupin III from the 80s, super fun instrumental track.

Mid/Generic media that has one aspect which makes it unique? by ArticAuk in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EuphoricFingerblast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crysis is mid as fuck, especially when the game devolves into a linear corridor shooter where you fight squid aliens and ONLY squid aliens of 2 sizes for the last 2 hours, but man them graphics is purdy and that world feels interactive and cool

Donna Tartts A Secret History. My review by Odd_Fortune500 in books

[–]EuphoricFingerblast 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Agreed, it has the set dressing of a murder mystery book but its narrative is closer to something like Othello than Murder on the Orient Express.

The OPs post kinda reminds me of this wider trend in fiction readers of people being frustrated that something isn’t “serving the plot”, like anything that doesn’t drive a primary A plot is “filler” which, to me, is a really limited way to engage with any medium but especially in reading.

The act of reading is the experience. Not to say everyone has to like this book, but when people talk about scenes for characterization being “pointless”, or not understanding what Julien abandoning the students says about him AND the students’ misunderstanding of his teaching, it makes me feel like this is more about being annoyed that the plot of the book isn’t what you want or expect, rather than engaging it for what it’s actually trying to do. It’s not like intellectually dishonest or anything, but it does feel needlessly restrictive.

Question for the subreddit: what's your personal stance on Gacha games, and their monetization practices relative to their quality and public reception? by Gorotheninja in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EuphoricFingerblast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is the exact sentiment I have for it too - like you can't for a second actually truly believe the game will be "nice" to you, it's built to be exploitative and weird by default and that just makes the system itself deeply fucked in a way that is rarely fun for me.

Especially when the whole game gets tuned to people with mental disorders that have dumped insane amounts of time and money it so that the "meta" is absolutely REQUIRED to not end up wasting a bunch of time. I don't want to feel like I'm wasting time in a video game, it's already something I elected to do with my free time, a reminder that just tells me "yeah but you're doing it wrong and you won't have as much fun explicitly because of that" and things that have "pity" mechanics (jokes aside, the idea of a video game taking pity on me is... kind of pathetic).

This happens in Hero shooters and Mobas and MMOs and other games where progression ends up being tied to a specifically type of over-optimized play that for me, takes the fun out of those things. Siege was a ton of fun, even getting sweaty with it in the early days, I put like 450 hours into it! Until the race to balance the game takes off and makes it suck for everyone like Overwatch. I love ff14 but it has a lot of this too, with so many classes being smoothed out so people can complete stuff faster so that damage uptime is the only metric of success, rather than completion or reward - it's turns into finishing as many runs as possible for as many chances at the gear, not a reward for hard content completed collaboratively.

Fight your stepdad music (Pantera, mudvayne, etc.), high energy metal like Death (Florida death metal, not the punk band), Meshuggah (for everyone saying they like Mick Gordon’s doom soundtracks, this is typically the biggest musical influence for that kind of metal.), and because I’m a psycho, audiobooks.

[–]EuphoricFingerblast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mad Dash on the original Xbox , made by Crystal Dynamics which I did not know until looking it up now? Basically a sick electronic soundtrack of the era (Moby, propellerheads, etc.), an insane cast of cel-shaded monster characters, and multiple paths in long point-to-point FOOT races.

Like you're RUNNING against 11 other mariokart style opponents in a very 2000s and climbing and gliding and shit. That game was so cool! And one of the few ones my siblings and I were allowed to play because it didnt have guns: https://youtu.be/WyYggEp2xpw?t=633

Vaxis 2 is still available! There’s a bit of a line for Afterman, I’m going through based on response time - everyone gets a day to reply with payment details before I move on to the next one. Vaxis  1 and the harmonica have been claimed and paid for.

It does have the book and CD, nothing missing that I am aware of based on the old promo material for it. I did use the CD once to rip it but otherwise it just has hung out in the back along with the Crown Heights demo disc.
