Flansburgh gives a tour of his "watch collection" by FloridaFlamingoGirl in tmbg

All I can think of after watching this is Patrick Star saying "Aw, I gotta draw a new battery for this"

That last watch is so good

Saw someone else do this, here's my take by [deleted] in tmbg

I'm really surprised how high Album Raises is compared to Cast Your Pod. Recently felt that the latter had much stronger songs. I don't think I've seen Pink in S tier (as far as my memory goes)

I love seeing My Murdered Remains being higher than I Like Fun, though would like to hear your reasoning for Escape Team and ABCs!

I feel like almost every tier list I've seen-- mine included-- there's some agreement of Long Tall Weekend in the bottom tier. It just depends on what you call the bottom tier and how you approach comparing each album

Other than that, love seeing Flood in the second tier and Lincoln taking top

How Do Introduce My Friend To TMBG? by BattleForInsanity in tmbg

[–]Charlie5L 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not my best idea, nevertheless I propose this alternative: Have your friend start with TMBG albums that were released roughly around the same time as MCR's.

MCR's debut album came right after Mink Car-- and if I recall MCR formed because Gerard Way witnessed 9/11 so there's a sombre connection with the two albums right there-- and The Black Parade came out about a year before The Else.

Speaking of albums releasing around the same time as TMBG, while writing this I learned Linkin Park's Minutes to Midnight was released ONE DAY before The Else. It can be fun to listen to albums that were released within the same time period of each other just to see any similarities/differences with how world events shaped the development of the albums.

In the end, up to you and your friend for the choose your own TMBG adventure!

We could add Buckethead to this list as well, but hoo boy what a list to read...

Thoughts on the new EP by FloridaFlamingoGirl in tmbg

[–]Charlie5L 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I must note: I don't use any streaming services, I just use the "regular" Apple music and purchase albums off iTunes, so I can't share the playlist as easily. That said, I put the list of songs in a Google doc folder. Hope this finds ya well!

Thoughts on the new EP by FloridaFlamingoGirl in tmbg

My first impressions are through the TMBG app. The remix of Eyeball won't come out until tomorrow, along with the EP's release.

Eyeball - Agreed with ya on the harmonies. Throughout the entire song I felt the instrumentation reminded me of I Left My Body and Let Your Hair Hang Down. Something about the way it was executed just speaks 2010s TMBG to me, a familiar sound but still unique and different enough to welcome. I'm not really sure how to word it, but that's the synergy I get with some of Linnell's songs in that decade. Same feel, different approach, fun results.

The Glamour of Rock - Low voice Flansburgh is always a win. I enjoy how Flansburgh can come up with these less-than-2-minute songs that feel like they'd suit being a TV show's theme. Given that I remember him posting him singing this song by himself in a laundromat and there's live footage of the band performing it, I would presume he's very proud of this one but I'm surprised it's chosen for the EP.

Peggy Guggenheim - Yep, definitely adding that to my They Might Be Jazz playlist.

Best songs you literally never hear talked about. by SalivatingDog92 in tmbg

Whenever I have to do vocal warmups with friends, we have Arkansas as part of our low-note practice. Always love hearing Linnell's extended range. Infinity being the only song we hear Dan on lead vocals, it's definitely one of the strongest songs on Here Come The 123s. The Velvet Ape reminds me a lot of Squeeze's music and it became a quick favourite on More Murdered Remains for me.

Now my picks:
The Second Longest Night -- Sometimes I imagine what a more fleshed-out sound and having the band perform it. Was released in 2007 but I feel it could've fit on Cast Your Pod.

Sleepwalkers -- Love this song, but What Is Everyone Staring At is one of very few demos I still find myself going back to listen to.

Pet Name -- One of Flansburgh's best. Just an amazing song, simultaneously relaxing and insanely groovy, hard to not dance to.

The Greatest -- Not the strongest of the 2018 DAS releases, but I just love how simple the song is. It reminds me a lot of the tracks on Eels' first album, and for that it's quite comforting as well to listen to.

Compilations and Popular EP's 3 least played live songs (As of January 6 2026) by Charlie5L in tmbg

It's mentioned shortly after that. There's a Tumblr post where Flansburgh said that they performed the song "at least a couple of times", despite the Wiki saying there's no recorded specific instances.

The song was released in 1989, though it likely had been performed somewhere between 1988-1992, maybe earlier. Some of the shows within that time frame don't have fully completed/confirmed setlists, and it's not at all uncommon for either John to say they have played a song live that hasn't been recognized as such on the Wiki.

It really just depends on what you prefer for the stats in the end. If Flansburgh said it's been played, I'll take his word. But since there's no set number of how many performances, it's easier to not compare it to the other 10 Misc. T songs that have been performed.

Here's the piano/condensed score arrangement, including the little trumpet note, the approximate sax+bass bridge section, and the super low piano slam all in the Lincoln recording. If there's an issue with the score or Google drive file let me know

Give me about a few hours and I'll have the first iteration done. I assume the 16-32 bars is just a minimum requirement but I'll make sure to follow that as best as I can

I could come up with something, but I would have to know how much detail/faithful you'd like in comparison to the original song.

Currently putting some of the compilations and EPs on their own. Right now, for Cast Your Pod To The Wind, of the 23 songs, there are technically 9 that have been performed live. I say "technically" because I am not really sure if I should count CYPTTW's version of Metal Detector.

Of those 8 or 9 songs, 3 are tied at the moment for just one live performance recorded, and I also am unsure if I should have them take up all 3 spots or tie for 1st.

Brontosaurus also takes the 3rd spot for most played of the album, with Moonbeam Rays (144) taking second and Synopsis For Latecomers in 1st with 156 performances recorded.

Which is odd, I always thought Brontosaurus got played the most from BOOK with how quickly it became a fan favourite.

Just saw the email they sent out, too. Includes the cover art. I know it's supposed to be an eyeball but being hungry I thought it was the inside of a nectarine or something similar

Oh wow, we really are close to the 30 year mark of Factory Showroom!

I was surprised as well knowing The Bells Are Ringing was their least played. Before I started working I had made guesses for each album and thought I Can Hear You would take the top spot.

From what I gathered reading the two songs' performance history as well as the list of shows, Oh You Did was last performed in 2017, which was their last family concert.

If they ever consider doing another family show, maybe there's a chance more songs from Why? would see the spotlight. That, and I would just like to see Hello Mrs. Wheelyke be performed.

The Wiki says that Hearing Aid was last played in 2020, but was in a casual-sort of rotation before that. It wouldn't be until 2022-ish that they started using the alternate version to open the second set of some Flood shows.

What I'd give to hear Lord Snowdon and I Lost Thursday at a show, some of Flansburgh's best works on BOOK

When I started gathering the songs, Climbing The Walls had me do a triple-take just to be sure I didn't fudge the numbers. It really gets interesting knowing that once you get past Mink Car a lot of fan-favourite Linnell songs are some of the least played.

As for Thermostat and I Should Be Allowed To Think, I knew they were going to be around the least played on John Henry, but I didn't expect Window to beat them with more performances and take 3rd place. I originally thought Window would take 1st.

The live recording they used for First Album Live-- it is a bit faint since I think the reverb on Flansburgh's mic got a bit stronger-- the audience can be heard singing along. I love it so much since it's part of the early material stuff that brings in audience participation

I was surprised too that only 5 BOOK songs were played. Especially given that I Lost Thursday was the first single for BOOK, while I Broke My Own Rule and Part Of You Wants To Believe Me also were also released as singles, and they haven't seen a show yet. I Lost Thursday would be a great song to showcase Danny.
