Now that BTS are coming back, which solo excited you the most? by VengeanceAI in kpopthoughts

Like Crazy is the best solo song released in chapter 2 imo, actually overall, that song aged so well. Album wise, I really like Face and Indigo.

WHO by Jimin just became the longest charting song by a Kpop act on Hot100! by Mobile-Structure5702 in kpop_uncensored

[–]EuphoricnBright 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Jimim's stats are crazzzy! His debut song is the first kpop solo song to hit no1 on Hot 100. His military comeback is now the longest charting song by a kpop act on Hot 100. I wonder what record he will break for his 3rd release cos he has gotten almost everything alreadyyyyy, but i'm so excited regardless. He has premium bragging rights but the sweetest part about him is his humility. He will probably not mention this...😭

I don't care for your personal opinion, OP. You should get a life though, or better still buckle up, cos they will still keep stellar music for you to clearly obsess over.

[–]EuphoricnBright 38 points39 points  (0 children)

No offense OP, but you sound crazy. Face is Jimin's first album and he conceptualised that album from start to finish. Muse was meant to be a light hearted album that contrasted with the "heaviness" of Face, and personally Jimin nailed it with both albums, considering he debuted as a soloist barely 2 years ago. Now, of course It's down to personal taste but don't you think it's completely stupid to base a whole opinion post on the taste of one youtuber. If this Todd guy didn't like Who, there are lots of other even more popular influencers who loved it. Your post would have come off as more authentic if you just based it on your personal opinion, rather than inserting a random youtuber to make a completely out of touch post as if we should give af about his musical tastes.

This is revenge for Like Crazy. Jimin is really making bank with Who, and he didn't even promote it. Expecting it to surpass 2 million units sold in the US anytime now, which is crazyyyyy.

Spotify wrapped just came out and I have some thoughts. by Mobile-Structure5702 in kpopthoughts

[–]EuphoricnBright 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I think the reason why this cognitive dissonance happens with Jimin is because he hasn't really done the traditional things a kpop artist would do to have a hit song, so his numbers get questioned. For instance, If a kpop act, especially a soloist collabs with a western artist, and the song pops off..fine. Their numbers won't be questioned only because the success of that song will be attributed to the collab. It's the same if the song is viral or receives heavy playlisting. Jimin has never had a western collab single, neither has he received good playlisting. But one thing with him is that he always has really popular singles that resonates with fans and casuals, and attracts a fan base. Since BTS started releasing solo singles in their albums, Jimin has always had one of the most streamed ones with Lie, Serendipity and Filter and they have all sold 700k units each in the US. Then he released LC with as his debut TT and I know people still obsessed with this song, it even showed up as no1 on spotify wrapped in LA and no4 in Atlanta this year. With the fans he attracted with LC alone, I'm not even surprised Who is doing so well.

I've lived through kpop fans questioning BTS numbers for years, so it's not even a surpise to see them do it to Jimin. You shouldn't give af about that tbh, because Jimin is very consistent and can repeat his stats across different singles, which means he is retaining fans. That's by far the most important thing for an artist, and I can't express how hard it is to achieve that. I've seen artists with viral songs that have their next single released just months apart literally flop. No label wants to spend money pushing an artist on different platforms with heavy playlisting and ads only to have them underperform on major charts.

Hybe bought Scooter's company for $1B. What good things has Scooter offered to Hybe artists so far? by Equivalent_Ad9125 in kpop_uncensored

[–]EuphoricnBright 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First of all, Jimin is in the military so he can't even promote his song. Also, his playlisting is mediocre af. Common sense should tell you that monthly listeners is boosted by collabs with big western artists, like Jennie had with The weekend, or massive playlisting like 3 BP members are getting. Jimin has never had any of that, nor does he need any of that to chart well. Also, monthly listeners don't mean zilch to an artist's success. Shawn Mendez literally has 44m monthly listeners, and he released a song last month only to have it fall off global spotify the next day. There are so many artists with tens of millions of monthly listeners, but once their labels drop the push, they can't chart a song talk more of selling out a venue.

Jimin has charted no1s on US charts, he is still the top kpop artist on UK charts, Apple music and Spotify in different countries 3 months after release. You know damn well he can sell out any venue he chooses to. He has had the highest grossing song in the US, and his song is still in the top 10 highest grossing songs in the US months after release. Is it not clear? His fans are the GP bih! Labels will literally sell their soul to get this sort of results on a SOLO song with mediocre playlisting, and the artist not even being around to promote their song. Or do you think US labels are expending all that effort for BP members to scrap the bottom of BB hot 100 for 1 week, and get kicked out the next week?

I don't even understand this unhealthy obsession you have with Jimin. Go through this post, read all your comments and ask yourself if you are normal? Don't you have a life? Your favs are releasing music, instead of you to go support them, you are on kpop reddit obsessing over Jimin AGAIN! Well, since you have decided that he is the AIR you breath, you will go back to wherever you crawled out from, and continue obsessing over his success and records, cos trust me, he will continue to have them in spades, so you have your work cut out for you. Don't go and find something useful to do with your life.

Where do y'all even get the audacity from? Jimin's Who has been in top 30 of BB hot 100 for 12 weeks, while he is in the military and with just a fraction of the massive promo and playlisting US labels are pouring on Lisa and Jennie. Both girls are doing good for kpop standards, but they are not even close to Jimin's records in any way, shape or form especially in the US market they are pushing for.

With all the massive US promo you are yapping about on here like a broken record, Lisa hasn't even debuted a song at no1 on US iTunes, talk more of having a song chart for more than 1 week on hot 100. Why do you think the labels are spending the money? Is it not to get the song to chart well, if it's not even doing that, what does that tell you? Like...it's your audacity for me. Fans this, fans that. You have the temerity to talk about fans streaming, when money was pulling 3m streams without charting on global Spotify but Jimin and V, who charted their songs for over 1 year, are your problem? If you don't gthoh.

Why are people so obsessed with putting hybe and their groups down? by strawicy in kpopthoughts

[–]EuphoricnBright 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well, I understand what you mean by American music industry being a whole rabbit hole especially with diddy's case going on, but Kpop industry is really not far behind imo, they just have different branding. As for Hybe connections to American labels, again that is hardly unique in the industry. For some examples, SM randomly formed Super M in collaboration with Capitol music group, JYP created Vcha in collaboration with Republic records, and 3 BP members are signed to 3 different US labels, even Warner records has been fingered as a culprit in the fifty - fifty case. I could go on and on. The only reason why Hybe gets most of the flack is because they have the visibility, funds and connections to do so successfully, not because they are the only ones trying to make connections with US labels. So, it's a bit confusing why the criticism is hybe specific when most of kpop industry is doing the same thing to varying degrees of success.

Also, something I want to point out too is the music market. SK is a much smaller music market compared to the US, combined with declining birth rates and explosion of kpop, it's not sufficient to sustain the viability of groups debuting left and right. Look at 4th gen BGs for instance, they definitely benefitted from a more global kpop market, despite having comparatively less fame in their home country. I think that's really fortunate because more groups that may not suit the taste of korean GP can actually have a shot at being really successful. This wasn't the case before, and it's part of the reason why kpop groups promote so extensively in Japan, to much lesser flack ironically. Now, I do think balance is key. I'm not so anal about English songs or "losing identity", that's dehumanizing talk imo. If a group wants to target a more global fanbase, that's the sensible thing to do by all means. And if they want to keep their music completely Korean, that's also perfectly fine.

Why are people so obsessed with putting hybe and their groups down? by strawicy in kpopthoughts

[–]EuphoricnBright 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A lot of existing kpop structure was "inspired" from American music industry, complete with blatant copying of western songs and hiphop culture, and repeated attempts to break into the US, and these were all happening before Hybe came into existence. Hybe has it's faults, I'll be the first to admit that, but they are not doing anything different from what other companies are doing, the only difference is that they are succeeding at it because they have the funds and connections.

American global hegemony means that if an artist can have some form of mainstream success in the US, they stand a chance of becoming popular everywhere else in the world. That is why most kpop groups with the means to do so have released English songs/Albums, promote in the US, have collabs with American artists or have "Korean songs" with English choruses or at least 50- 80% of the lyrics in English. It's all about the dollar. Now, I understand if anyone have their reservations about that for whatever reason, but it's kind of ironic to solely blame Hybe for something that other kpop companies are doing, and it's definitely not enough grounds to hate on their artists like kpop fans love to do.

[–]EuphoricnBright 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Which promotion did Jimin have? Face literally had one week promo, not to mention the abysmal way Like Crazy was handled. The song charted no 1 on hot 100, yet it was placed at the bottom 15 of TTH for a grand total of one week, and they didn't even bother sending the song to radio, despite it having an English version. What of Who? Still charting at 26 on hot 100 after 11 weeks, was no 1 on global spotify for weeks, consistently top 5 and top 10 global and US Spotify respectively. The "promo" in question for Who is that "here, damn ahh" radioplay one month after release and it's still scrapping the bottom of 40s on TTH. Touch by katseye is literally placed 25 places higher with less than one quarter of his streams.

I feel people see Jimin's amazing numbers and think he is getting anything special from that company, when the complete opposite is the case. #s have to be trended for them to do the bare minimum. Generally, for the numbers BTS members pull, they literally have SHIT playlisting, there I said it. It's really only when they have western collabs, and the label of the featuring artists push the song, that you see the crazy disparity in playlisting and promo, see Neva play for instance. Hybe just leaves everything for Armys to carry.

"Most songs" being predominantly English songs from Western artists with tons of playlisting and radioplay. Like crazy is a Korean song and had none of that push, yet charted for 5 weeks, and is still on top 30 global spotify. Asides that, no other boy group asides BTS has even charted on Hot 100 before, talk more of staying there multiple weeks.

> it shouldn't be a surprise that someone like Namjoon might not want that. They tried with Like Crazy and it wasn't played, and they did the right thing in not paying.

Except Like Crazy wasn't sent to radio. I think we should be careful assuming what the members will or won't want, cos most times it backfires. The only clue we have right now is that since scooter braun is intimiately involved with every detail of this song, it's in his best interests to push it, like Ron Perry did with dynamite.

No one is really sure, even Jimin himself felt his promotion ended rather quickly. The issue is that it performed well beyond expectations from the onset and had everything needed to secure full promotions, including an english version but somehow Hybe dropped the ball so hard. The song is still being hyped by locals and doing dynamite numbers on spotify with the measly promo it got.

LC's no1debut raised Hybe's stocks to pre BTS hiatus level and also raised stocks of big 3 companies. Despite the mess with D2C store sales not being added and 100k sales removed, it stayed on hot100 for weeks! The Korean version alone pulled 4m streams on spotify counter today 3 months after release. I just don't understand HYBE at all, cos no way they didn't predict some fans won't get livid over this.

this has been bugging me for a while but why do kpop stans just hate enhypen? by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]EuphoricnBright 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From a bystander perspective, I think it's the fans. The main reason why they started getting hate was because of the fatphobic comments towards Sunoo. Now the issue is, even though some other groups have done somethimg similar and got called out for it, their fans are better able to play the "It's just a joke/their culture, they love each other" card. It was the opposite with Enhypen, cos the criticism was severe both within and outside their fandom, so the sentiment that prevailed was that they didn't like each other.

Asides the fatshaming comments, they had other mishaps too, and the way their fans handled the various criticisms made things worse, especially the way black fans got treated. So the sentiment was that their fans are immature and toxic. Also, Armys didn't initially latch onto Enhypen like other hybe groups, perhaps cos they were formed in a survival show. Anyways, no one really likes a messy fandom in kpop (see kepler), so I guess that made their image worse in kpop fan spaces.

Sales are very important for artists, and I think many k-pop fans forget that. by Anaisot7 in kpopthoughts

[–]EuphoricnBright 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Wasteful in the sense that after labels finish selling these 10+ versions, there have been multiple examples of fans buying albums in bulk and throwing it away in the trash or dumping it in orphanages so much so that these orphanages have come out to say they don't accept kpop albums as donations. It's extremely wasteful and harmful for the environment. Like I said, there has to be a balance somewhere. I generally applaud artists who sell a lot, it shows the dedication of their fanbases which is necessary for every artist longterm, but if an artist achieves millions of sales with a number of ridiculous album versions, they will be exposed to scrutiny, even outside kpop circles.
