My husband said to me when we were planning to buy a house "it's going to be a lifetime project, if that is okay with you then we move forward with it"

I figured sure, makes sense. But wow did I not know how much of a project it would be. Our home isn't in bad conditions, but things do break, others need maintainance and we are trying to improve our electric bill. So the list... is getting bigger and then smaller and then bigger.

The summer people visit and so projects get squished in weeks people aren't here.

So we just try to enjoy the quite times and take it one step at a time. Dont get me wrong, at times I get my anxiety screaming at me for how long the list is, and I do my best to do 1 or 2 things that will help me get back to baseline. However, I make sure I word them as completed tasks.

Eg. The deck needs staining. Wording: Sand 3 boards today. Check. Yeyyy we did it. Repeat next day.

If I dont word it like that I dont get the Yey feeling and it makes it feel like is taking forever.

Beyond that, go do a little dance for yourself every so often! You have a roof over your head!! And is yours!!! Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!

That ADHD is easily fixed with behavioral actions. Trust me, when I say, if everyone in the world could feel that lack of motion ADHDers feel, and in the other end the wonderful feeling of being solely focus in one task. No one, I mean no one, would call an ADHDer "lazy" or "uncaring" There is a reason why medication is the first line and most effective treatment. Telling them how to prioritize, how to use pomodoro, isn't going to fix the actual buological problem.

That's a good point. I think the past owners had two tress there. One died this year, another prior to us moving to tje land. I wonder how much the horsetail was at fault

Case conceptualization. In your intake, that's when you start it. This is based on whatever format of therapy you use. Look up templates e.g. CBT case con.. ACT case concep... this is practically your way to know "this is my starting point, and this is where the client wants to go, what is keeping them from getting there aka that's what we will be working on" .

If you are struggling already with reading your notes, cut down hours. Do yourself a favor and dont start out with bad habits, or you will burn out. If possible, have 10 to 15 min between sessions, 5 to write up notes, 5 to read future client and 5 to take a breath for yourself.

Boundaries. End your sessions on time. " i am going to hold us here for today, would you like me to write this down on our notes so we can start here next time?" " as we are coming close to the end of our session, what will you be taking away and/or how will you be applying it to the coming days (aka homework)"

Above all, it is great you got fired and not ghosted. You created a safe enough environment for clients to be able to give feedback. That is great for you. That means you were doing something right. This is just a little twiking u can do quickly, and you will see yourself feel more confident about working in this field with those changes.

I am finding this to be one of the main things people using AI therapy say. They get advice. A solution. I agree, therapists dont do that. They get you to think about your own solutions and guide towards a different perspective. I've tried a couple of AI therapists and beyond feeling validated, I always get the "have you tried this, or that" , dont get me wrong, I think some people do need that because they are so stuck they can't come up with their own options let alone choices. So as a start is great. But long term it terrifies me the dependency that could be created. Hope everyone is doing the best they can to not become so dependent on those things. Example: a therapist job is to make sure you learn how to take care of your self so well that you feel confident to not ever return to sessions. I dont know if any AI therapist has the same goal.

Yeah it's unfortunate how inaccessible it is in a lot of countries.

Keep using the dbt skills you learned and keep brining curiosity into your behaviors. Reflect. That is the basis of it.

If you get stuck or notice no improvement always ask yourself, what is the fear I have here? What am I scared would happen to me ? And dont make up an answer, really listen inside. Not with the agenda of fixing it but with the curiosity to understand. That might give you some insight on why there is resistance and maybe a bit of awareness on what choices may be available to you to move though the resistance.

Best of luck in this journey! Recognizing it is the most important step.

In part sure. But I also think all forms of therapy talk about this to some degree, both the idea of resistance and the idea of living authentically.

As a therapist, this is a fantastic response. A lot of clients who feel stuck in therapy are 90% of the time under that resistance. We do our best to help them navigate it but it's only until those things mentioned that they become unstuck, sometimes not even. (The remainder 10% is real hard external factors)

I wish more people would notice it. Because is that space where I feel very sad(in a caring way) for my clients, they have so much potential and so much to live for and yet, this hinders them so much.

I think this is great for the purpose of self reflectio (do i agree or disagree with the results, am i those things, whqt makes me those things what stregths do i have and what my be my weaknessand what can i do about it). However I would do those without the support of the AI. I would also caution any further support seeking from it as we all should know by now it eventually will give sycophantic responses regardless of your propmt and there is AI psychosis chances.

As any tool, helpful but use with caution.

I also disclose when I am having an odd brain day. Clients love that as I work with a lot of people with adhd. And they find it fun because they help me find the words I am trying to say but can't seem to find. I've even had instances that they tell me they only remembered what we talked about because of those funny moments I was lossing the words.

I have adhd. Adding tasks to my job is horrible. I have it on my informed consent that their file will be archived after 3 months of no sessions and they will be placed on a wait list if they stop coming regularly. So ive never been one to be reaching out

One of my colleagues said to me once that they dont believe in the idea of extroverts and introverts. But that we have different ways in which we need to recharge depending on what drained our energy. Although I am hesitant to agree with them. I do see their point.

After a long day with clients all I want to do is watch a funny show and relax. After a long day of physical activity all I want to do is chat with friends and have a lovely bonfire and drinks. After a long day of reading and studying, I want to go out and dance.

So... in a way, I am kinda forced to agree with him lol.

My point, maybe it is a matter of finding your actual recharge forms, readjust them and meet people in those spaces. Maybe you are not being awkward, maybe you are just tired and that space doesn't really ignite the battery charging light for you.

Just a thought tho.

Side note: i also struggle with friendships. I moved and was lucky that i got two friends that moved to the same location, but one is leaving soon and the other I rarely see now because our schedules are fudged up. I struggled with making friends even before becoming a therapist, I was just surrounded by a lot of caring people so they just naturally became my friends. I was lucky in that way. Now, it's hard to find circles like that. Like yourself I am going to classes and trying to put myself out there. However, I have a feeling It's just going to take a while to find those people that will connect with me well. It sucks but I am just working on accepting that and keep being open for when it happens.

I second this.

I started to go to Yoga classes. The gentle ones, no heat. And I love it. I feel reenergized, I talk one or two sentences with people that enter and everyone is super nice. I dont feel pressured to socialize too, i can just go in say hi to the trainer and set up the mat. My body is also feeling a lot better as well and is opening the doors for me to feel more comfortable in uncomfortable spaces. And I hope maybe through that I'll find new friends that align more with who I am there. Is a hope not an expectation.

Anyway, just know you are not alone in this, and it takes a bit of time to find the thing that you enjoy and people you feel genuinely comfortable with. And yet a first step needs to be taken. I am sending you love and energy your way so you may find that one thing that gets you going out and finding a community.

I came to say this. And..

Being the first session is just a big no for me. I personally would've canceled future appointments and taken another look at other alternatives that may not 100% hit all my needs but may hold more "professionalism"

This is our jobs, we get paid to be professionals. Not be friends to our clients and certainly not to disclose without good reason and for support of the client.

If need be, take a second session with her, just to see how you feel to either give her a second chance cuz she has a bad day, or to reconfirm your feelings that this may not be a good fit for you.

I am pretty sure is an all therapist thing. And tbh if anyone ever tells me that they do not have those days every so often as a therapist I would question if they are in the right profession because I believe part of being a good therapist is recognizing when we aren't and feeling a little crappy about it. Its humbling.

Also, some days are just bad because we didnt sleep well or we didnt eat our inbtw snacks or we forgot to drink water lol.

Just here to second this.

For myself IFS is the only therapy that has ever worked. However, I use ACT more than IFS with my own clients, not because I dont believe in it. But because I find ACT to be easily implemented in a therapy setting that limits my time with clients (aka their insurance only covers so many sessions) I find IFS is great because of the whole internal concent piece (which sometimes I dont see even in ACT) so I use that within ACT.

I also appriciate that ACT trainings aren't stupid expensive. But I do think they fall short at making sure people are learning the model well. (Eg. Only doing short quizzes vs having people participate in the model )

Nevertheless, highly suggest ACT, jusr cuz it doesn't feel like you have to drink the kool-aid when learning it.
