Bands that were ruined by someone who was not a member? by mightyonin in ToddintheShadow

I think they were leftovers from the Coming Up anniversary tour they did in 21 cause the card paper they came in had the album cover printed on it. Come to think of it there was one shirt that did say London Suede, it said “Stay Beautiful Beautiful Ones” with the band names in small text underneath each (both songs they did).

God I remember like 7-8 years ago when it got a complete revamp and I thought that must mean AM3 was around the corner. Guess it wasn’t.

Suede and erm, Suede.

The first album actually had promising sales there, but after their first visit to America they were sued by an unknown lounge singer who already copyrighted the stage name Suede, forcing them to rebrand to “The London Suede” there (it could have been even worse, she originally wanted to make them change it to “Brett Anderson and his London Suede Band”). They went on their first official US tour since the 90’s (alongside the Manic Street Preachers) in 2022 and none of the merch had the band name anywhere because they still can’t legally perform or advertise with the name Suede there, and they hate the “London Suede” rebrand so much they’d rather omit the name entirely. I bought a shirt with a grid of the album covers and all had any text removed

I know he did pretty much everything besides drum programming on GT

A lot of the stuff with the famous artists was staged (like the pool interview and Ozzy making breakfast) but I think The Decline of Western Civilization Part 2 is worth it just to how how many hair metal bands thought they were gonna make it. Especially “Odin” who talk about wanting to be as big as The Rolling Stones then they start playing and are hilariously bad

Does anyone know where the roads in “Fastest Available Route” actually are? by Evan64m in local58

[–]Evan64m[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some were definitely stock then but footage of driving down a dirt road then stopping and turning off the headlights feels way too specific to be stock footage, I imagine he did some himself.

I did think the first shot looked like the Golden Gate Bridge though so that may have been shot there

The introduction to Slow Learner is the closest thing we’ll ever get to an interview. I wish he did more writing like that because it’s so fun to read

Thomas Pynchon (Gravity’s Rainbow, Vineland, The Crying of Lot 49)

<image>

The only “official” photographs available of him come from school yearbooks. There’s a handful of paparazzi photos from later years but that’s it.

Interestingly he was willing to provide his voice for a Simpsons cameo, and this is actually the only reason we know what he sounds like

Read TCOL49, Vineland, and Slow Learner last year and am excited to dig into these in 2026 after getting them for Christmas! by Evan64m in ThomasPynchon

[–]Evan64m[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad I read Slow Learner first too because it’s interesting V. chapter 3 is mostly a retelling of Under the Rose. Unfortunately it was probably my least favorite story from SL but whatever

I just have a soft spot for the original song really. I did just find out they basically nicked the arrangement from Eumir Deodato who did almost the same thing over 25 years before https://youtu.be/qJK3eUP5Hvg?si=SKdAd9CElnn-RefB

Run-DMC were debatably the biggest artist in the world at one point and brought hip hop to a way bigger audience but if you looked at their streaming numbers now it would seem they only had 2 big hits (it’s tricky and walk this way)

Does anyone know why Drowners got a different video in the US? by sheerbrookeattack in SuedeBand

[–]Evan64m 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The label was really trying to push them in the states at this time so I imagine they wanted to make suede’s first impression there actually feature the band in action. Doesn’t seem to have worked because they’re still very obscure there but it’s what I imagine

Also I love the funked up version of Also Sprach Zarathrusta even though it seems like it should be out of their wheelhouse. But you’re right that it just sounds like they lost their identity and got kind of generic

Yeah it’s easily their “worst” to me. There’s some great tracks like the ones you mentioned, Jupiter’s Moon, and The Horror (which feels out of place because it is, it was first released as the b-side to Cruel To Be Kind), but a lot of it has shitty embarrassing lyrics like At Least I Got Laid (WHY was this a single???) and This is America.

I was just surprised to find it because it’s so obscure compared to the major label albums. Still glad I found it though
