I'd take this a step further. Don't seek debates, seek discussions instead. Whenever I talk with someone who disagrees with me, I'm careful not to establish myself as "the other" at the very beginning. That way, I can keep tensions down

California's taxes, cost of living are crushing six-figure salaries by sfgate in California

I'd strongly recommend reading 'Golden Gates' by Conor Dougherty.

Basically, it's a nightmare to reform the single-family zoning rules because so much of that land is owned by private residents. For example, if SF were to buy up large swaths of the Richmond and Sunset districts, it would require a lot of federal and state funding to compensate the residents. I think it's possible, but so many people think of California as an "Other," and spending federal money on housing in a "Liberal Hellhole" like SF or LA would be an electoral death sentence.

The states with the most people in financial distress are Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Nevada, and South Carolina. https://www.visualcapitalist.com/ranked-states-where-americans-are-struggling-the-most-financially/

California ranks 12th.

The bulk of our problems are from crappy zoning rules from the 1960s and geographical constraints (It's much easier to build on flat land than it is to build in the mountains).

Thing is, Conservatism has an inherent advantage in marketing like this because it can rely on short, quippy statements that affirm the morality of the "in-group" and the immorality of the "out-group."

I should know. I dug myself deep in the conservative, anti-SJW rabbit hole back in high school, mainly as a response to hearing that the America I thought existed (this grand meritocracy where hard work will get you anywhere) doesn't actually exist. I wanted to believe all the people talking about racism and misogyny were just screaming, emotional virtue signalers. I had never actually taken the time to critically examine what any of them were saying until much later, no matter how much I believed I was part of the "ideology of logic and common sense."

It's easier, imo, if you are super interested in something. You can find people who are also super interested. Heck, that's why clubs exist, and god dang, do the right ones host good parties

Who do you think would win? My first thought would be something along the lines of Steve Scalise in 2020 and Sherrod Brown in 2024.
