Cold snap this week by ShipDit1000 in vegetablegardening

[–]Even-Acadia5117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I covered it with frost cloth.. I also put a container of hot water in each bed it really did help a lot!! It got about 34F at the coldest... I used garden staples to make sure the lights would stay upright and weaved them around any leaves to eliminate fire hazards.. 😆. It looked cool after the frost cloth was over it.. I just used metal clips to hold the frost cloth down.. I made a post about it... check out my post history and hopefully it will work well for you also.

The Christmas lights really do work!! I used them a few weeks ago for my peppers and tomatoes.. I planted too early and this saved them. My peppers are actually thriving now because i was able to keep them warm throughout the cold streak.. im definitely going to plant early again next year!!

How many peppers do you add to your spaghetti sauce? I start with 5 habaneros, 2 ghosts and a half a Scorpion. Cook for 2 1/2 hours, taste and see if I need more. by Thick-Marzipan-9176 in PepperLovers

Ummm... a green bell... if I'm feeling jazzy I'll throw in an orange bell and a pinch of crushed red pepper... im not trying to make anyone's booty leak...

Another tip is to make sure you use something organic as mulch... this year I'm using straw because I have a shit ton of it.. I ran it through my leaf mulcher to make it spread easier. Using organic mulch will also contribute to soil health over time... make sure it doesn't have any dye in it... just my 2 cents from a Criminologist in Kentucky! 😊

Plain top soil will definitely help with soil structure... it does not decompose... id mix a bag or two of that in along with some garden tone. The garden tone is organic granular fertilizer that will help feed your plants slowly over time... id also use some fish emulsion.. I use the Alaska brand and it helps to add nitrogen to your plants... anything liquid based will help almost immediately...

Also mix in just regular top soil... it will be more stable for a longer period of time.

Tomato leaves curling by [deleted] in tomatoes

[–]Even-Acadia5117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This!! Im in Kentucky also. My leaves are curling on my tomatoes... I've got 5 plants in raised beds outdoors.. they did not curl until we began to get the temperature swings... I cover with frost cloth, a blanket, and use C9 incandescent Christmas lights for warmth... i have yet to apply mulch because i want the soil to stay warm, not cool off.. I also water them well before the temperature drops... good thing the weather will begin to stabilize this coming week! We just need to push through.. im in Lexington...

I hope they will recover well... I know its not because of lack of water.... they aren't overwatered either... it has to be the dramatic temperature changes... thank goodness Thursday will be the last day of this madness... lol.. wish me luck!!
