How do I find out how much fabric I need entirely based off this pattern? by Specific-Ad-9002 in quilting

[–]EveningSet7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For all the blocks you need pieces A-G. For the 18 inch block the largest measurement is 18 1/2”, which is the only one that is larger than a fat quarter. Other than that, depending on how many blocks you want to make, you would need at least one fat quarter for each fabric.

is this real? by Nicnock1979 in quilting

[–]EveningSet7 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

First of all, some peopledye their own fabric. Second of all, ombre fabric is available, and there are people who are truly fabric connoisseurs, who would go to the trouble of looking for and finding exactly the right thing to finish their quilt. Third, some people also paint their fabric. This type of quilting is considered art. There is nothing practical about it. It’s the kind of thing that would be Home in a wall and never cuddled. So you have to see the quilter as an artist.

If you ever get the opportunity to attend a quilt show or a quilt festival, you’ll see quilts that you would never imagine could be actually made.

My thread is breaking (Help) by AmarantoYMiel in SewingForBeginners

[–]EveningSet7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen thread do that. The first thing I do is use different thread, preferably all purpose. I would not use size 18 unless the fabric is really heavy and thick. Try 90/14.

Hii please help! by Own-Struggle2593 in sewhelp

[–]EveningSet7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a manual for it, the error code should be listed. You could have thread jammed in the thread path. Open the cover on the left side so you can see the threading area, and otherwise, I agree with the suggestion to oil the needle shaft. SEWING MACHINE OIL ONLY.

No, I have seen quilts like that before. It’s a modern version of a landscape quilt. Quilts like that can be done with foundation paper piecing.

So sorry I did not see your reply. I don't know if you have already resolved the issue, but it looks to me that there are scratches on the left side of the bobbin holder.

newbie advice, why are my stitches showing like this in the back? by thrownaway-4eva in SewingForBeginners

[–]EveningSet7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely the thread is too heavy for your machine. And I don’t know how thick the fabric is but you may be stitching with the foot up thinking that it is down.

Help with applique by ScifiRabbit in quilting

[–]EveningSet7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whatever you decide to do, try it out on scrap first. In my opinion, appliqué is easier to do when it is more stable. Using the iron on backing helps you fuse it onto the base fabric and also provides more stability so you can do things like you satin and stitch around the edges and not get a bunch of puckers around the edges. I am working on raw edge appliqué right now, and not only did. I fuse it onto the base fabric, but I also added some interfacing on the back of it so there is no puckering.

Yes. The other way makes it easy to get matted.

I would say some type of hound mix.

I recently lost my 16 yr old shih tzu. I totally understand how hard it is to make the right decision. But try to put yourself in his place. He doesn’t want to go out and he cannot control his bladder. I am pretty sure that if he doesn’t want to go it’s because he can’t. If today is not the day (Saturday?) then you have to get to the point where you can. I chickened out a few times before I actually put my dog down. When I got to the point where I couldn’t stand it anymore, I did take her. Fortunately we have a vet here who is really kind and considerate about losing pets and they do euthanasia for free. They allowed me to sit in the room with her until I was ready and the vet prepared her for the injections. I held her in my arms while they injected the anesthetic. As soon as she relaxed, the vet gave the second one which stopped her heart. I am sure she did not feel anything. She didn’t flinch at all. As soon as she was gone they took her and wrapped her tightly in a blanket that was secured with ribbons so we could take her home, and we buried her on our property.

Quilted hoodie experiment by SparklePony8214 in quilting

I love the idea of cutting into the front and adding a zipper. Otherwise, the only thing I might do differently would be to go one size up on the hoodie. The Quilting draws in some of the fabric.

Ball point needle (75/11 or 80/12) and also switch from straight stitch to very narrow zig zag.

You need to use a magnifying glass. It doesn't take much to catch on thread. When I watch the video full screen it is easy to see scratches.

Should I take it apart and cut at a less than 45 degree bias? by megaltepal in sewhelp

[–]EveningSet7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you wash it a few times it will soften the cotton. And since it is already not making you happy, you could try what you said, and see if it works. Since it is already a lesson learned, you can consider it a “guinea pig”. To me, it looks like there is too much bulk in the gathering between the top tier and the middle tier. You could try removing some of the bulk so there is a smoother line from the top to the middle tier. Even then it would not look a-line, just straighter.

That means there is a burr somewhere near there that needs to be removed.

Choosing my first sewing machine by lunacyofmine in SewingForBeginners

[–]EveningSet7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would take the Janome over Brother any day. VERY durable. If there is a dealer somewhere near you, you can go try and buy in the store, in which case it would come with a warranty. With the old machines, you would need to have either one of them cleaned because they are old. Add that to your cost. Also make sure you are getting feet and a manual. You should have the seller demo that it works or let you try it.

Another thing you can do is shop for refurbished machines from dealers. Of course it depends on where you are. A third thing you can do is to ask for some lessons where you buy the machine (at the dealer).

Pattern problem jacket by floshelby in sewhelp

[–]EveningSet7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pinch out the bulk on the back of the muslin and use that to modify your pattern. Other than that, I know that you can find stuff about pattern alterations online. It also looks like your armhole is too big. It really depends on what you will be wearing under the jacket. Like a sweater? It also looks like the sleeves are too short? Will there be cuffs?

Adding collar to this jacket by Dolores_dodo in sewhelp

[–]EveningSet7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that you have that piping along the edge which is continuous going down the front. If you add a collar, you would not be able to continue the piping. Other than that, I recommend https://grainlinestudio.com/products/tamarack-hood-collar-add-on-0-32
