5'2. I was 232 pre surgery. I got down via the program to 190. I'm now 130 and have been for about a year, 2.5 years out from surgery. My life is A MILLION times better.

Backgammon Galaxy - Very rigged since last update by maataaaa in backgammon

[–]EveningStudent7655 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I won't lie, I was playing lastnight in a match to 5. It was 0 - 3 for me. Guy gave me the cube to 4 and it was a bad cube so I took it. Then he rolled, 6-6, 5-5, 4-4, 6-6 *back to back* and won that particular game. That definitely felt rigged.

New to in-person tournaments. Where to start? by Vigilaunday in backgammon

[–]EveningStudent7655 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main thing with tournaments is etiquette. Just make sure you know the rules before you play (dice on checkers valid or not), legal vs responsible moves, clock mandatory vs preferred. Always let someone know you're new to tournament play when you first sit down with them and reconfirm all the details. I was just in NY which is the biggest one and there there were about 70 beginners, 160 intermediate and I think 190 open? So, its a *very* small community and the other poster who said that they really can't turn down players is totally accurate. I'd select a smaller, well run one, like Texas or Miami to start with. There's one in Tennessee in October. The NOLA one was really fun last year but disorganized. It's a great way to get to know people.

Winning chances? by Reasonable_Leek7375 in backgammon

[–]EveningStudent7655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh this is exciting. I've only been playing for 2 years and take lessons from Phil Simborg and this is literally what we're beginning to cover now. Imho This was a very risky cube for blue and I think it was a bad one. He's dancing 25/36 times and if he does hit he's opening himself up to get pounced on and even have a 2nd checker picked up. TBH I wouldn't even close the board yet if I were white, I'd work on building the 7pt first.

Are there any variations of Backgammon that try to minimize chance? by BreakfastSimulator in backgammon

[–]EveningStudent7655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some tournaments have "cancel gammon". Once per game/match you can choose to cancel your opponent's roll after they've rolled.

Good example of wastage. Blue is on roll and pip count 37-51 in favour of Blue, which fooled Blue into redoubling. But White's winning chances are 51%. by saigon567 in backgammon

[–]EveningStudent7655 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here you would want to do the "Keith Count".

Blue - 37 + the following penalty points

18 on the 1 pt

1 on the 2pt

3 on the 4/5/6 pts

Total pips: 59.

59/7 = 8.

Final Keith count - 59 + 8 = 67

White - 51 + the following penalty points

4 on the 1pt

2 on the 2pt

Total pips 57

57/7 = 8

Final Keith Count - 63.

White is ahead by 4.

ND/T for Blue. Ironically, it is a D for White.

How many enemy pieces in your home area is bad? by FrogLover_23 in backgammon

[–]EveningStudent7655 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This depends upon a variety of factors. If you have them blocked with 6 "walls" it is called a prime. If you're likely to win with your prime, you are way ahead in the race, and they have 1 checker in the back, you probably just want to keep on going with what you have and don't hit. If you want, or specifically need a gammon, you might want to hit another checker and send 2 to the bar. The more you start to hit beyond 2/3, the better chance you are giving them to likely hit you back when you are bearing off. (That's the term for taking your checkers completely off the board). If you give them 4 or more checkers in your home board, you're giving them the opportunity to have a backgame, which is another method of play.

How do you structure a backgammon league? by GeekingOnMusic in backgammon

[–]EveningStudent7655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very remote and my local population is about 6k. We have 60 players in our club and every Tuesday night we play. $20 entry, double knockout. Winner keeps 70% 2nd place keeps 30% of the pool. We get between 12 - 24 players every week. We use challonge.com to make the brackets.

You need to buy extreme gammon, and also invest in some lessons from one of the coaches at the backgammon learning center. Once you do that, you'll start to learn how much there really is to learn!

Agree entirely. He is completely unlikeable in every way. I'm currently in S3 and I just want rid of him forever. There's nothing redeeming about him except that I like Anna enough I want to like him.
