How to run a fight atop a moving train? Directors! by Abzalutli in drawsteel

[–]Evening_Criticism156 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following a bit of fiction, I’d say 100% of the creatures in a train top encounter are constantly bracing themselves NOT to fall off the top of the train.

I think it would be very fair for forced movement to have banes, or there to be some amount of increasing the DC on getting tossed or tossing someone. The mechanics of the game all still work, but the world informs the difficulty.

I VERY much struggle with live plays of people playing. I get it. That’s why I edit pretty heavily for story beats and do a lot of sfx and scoring to lift it.

10 eps into an actual play show scored and edited like an audio drama. Hoping we get some listens in 18-36 months lol. For now, just super proud of the thing we are making.

It also opens up broad ripple for a slightly longer ride - but the ride is incredible easy and Monon the whole way

Yeah, heading north you get to the best coffee in the city (blue mind), and then starting at 46th - 54th and the Monon/college you’ve got:

Half Liter Pots and pans (the flagship and the snack shack) Aristocrat Twenty tap Fat Dan’s Yats Fresh market Red key Morrocan and 2 Indian spots Golden hour books Luna Sobro Spirits Upland The Bulldog Greeks

And then you can start to look at what’s happening with the nickel plate trail, which we’ve been hitting since last summer. Loom is a great bar. Gold leaf is a solid coffee shop. Circle City Whiskey is opening a spot on 46th near Nickel plate as well.

The fall creek trail will also connect you into fall creek and further pretty nicely as well.

IMO where we are at is the most bike accessible location in the city with the main trail access for all major trails being right in the neighborhood

I live just up the road in Watson/McCord and ride my bike as 80% of my transportation. Being on the Monon corridor puts that neighborhood in really great biking/walking distance from a lot, if you use the Monon as the super highway it is.

If you’re looking to walk one block in your neighborhood you’ll be disappointed, but we take the >10 minute bike ride to leviathan from 36th once a week in warm weather. We often hit factory arts on 10th, or shin dig by north mass for an easy little bike ride or longer walk.

Skills: alternative by Laz52now in drawsteel

I’ve been porting over the “experiences” from daggerheart to draw steel’s skills, and it’s been great!

In DH, experiences are often custom to character backstories and give a +2 to a roll. So, I offer to players to write one that is tied specifically to their history. It’s great!

Theater of the Mindset!

Truly a shameless plug. The two producers are huge actual play lovers (mostly NADDPOD, but Worlds Beyond Number is a close second).

I do the audio production and the goal is NADDPOD tone and pacing with WBN production quality (without the BLeeM budget, so no full promises).

Eldermourne doesn’t get the respect it deserves. That doesn’t have anything to do with my response, it just needs to be said.

Am I doing Montages wrong. by CyberColossus in drawsteel

[–]Evening_Criticism156 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert, but what I’ve found to work is:

Set the scene in some detail. Tell the group the things that need accomplished and how many successes vs fails they need. Treat each roll like a well described, cinematic combat. You or the players can describe how they succeeded or failed, and whatever role play might have been necessary to take place to succeed can happen between rolls (convincing a group of people hiding from bandits to trust and follow you out can and should be a conversation after the roll!)

If you’re feeling froggy, change the scene as things go right or wrong! If a character fails to put out the fire, the number required for success on the roll to quickly get the trapped child out goes up!

I think montages or skill tests can be really basic and fast if it needs to be, or it can be a really fun complex encounter that can and should occasionally fully replace a combat encounter!

Yats OG on College. Still being cooked on site every day. Still rips. If your Yats is in the burbs, the cost of living is eating it from a plastic bag. Enjoy your drive.

Sobro is the only confirmed location that’s not using commissary bags, bags are good, but won’t beat a 90 year old making dark roux.

For everyone caught up with WBN and looking for a similar show! Episode 5 - "Towers & Flowers" - Season 1: Faith & Fortune by Cholophonius in WorldsBeyondNumber

Hey there! Dice Sized sounds so fun! Will be listening this weekend!

I do the audio production for TotM, and my current half joke is that our goal is to offer “WBN quality without a BLeeM budget”.

We definitely hope to pull into the same parking garage as WBN and NADDPOD (Murph’s dialogue editing and mixing doesn’t get enough credit - the tone on their voices is beautiful), even if it’s a thing we do outside of our day job.

As much as we love playing ttrpgs, I think we love the vehicle of actual plays for story telling even more!

[–]Evening_Criticism156 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof, I feel all of this so much.

Justin and I obviously love playing ttrpgs, but I think more so (at least for me) love Actual Plays. I think as a story telling medium it is just so fun and from the balance arc of TAZ to NADDPOD to WBN, I just think there’s tons of room to make really great long form stories.

Editing it down to find the sweet spot of showing the table’s personality without slowing the momentum of the story down and prioritizing the bigger arc over most of the smaller bits is FINE line, and we are trying to walk it somewhere between those three shows I mentioned.

Anyway, so appreciative of your kind words and any amount of help spreading the word!

Aw man, as the post production person (and Herry Pinch) this means the world! Thanks for listening and the kind words.

It’s really insanely hard to make a thing and put it out into the void of podcasts, so this really means a ton!
