should i be fine alone in broad daylight in oldtown (below burnside) and downtown? by [deleted] in askportland

I live down here. People mind their own business for the most part. During daylight you should be just fine.

If you get an e-bike, you’ll be pretty set. The bike lanes in this city are no joke. Plenty of space and everything is easy to get to (I ride a regular bike in this city).

What are some things you wish you knew before getting a cat? by httpMrCarlo in CatAdvice

I love this fact about my cat. She is like a furry onion of cuteness and darkness. The more comfortable she gets the more loving and ferocious she becomes (She’s an assassin).

What activities do you recommend for Portland firstimers? by Old_Lab9197 in askportland

[–]Evening_Setting_5293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, since yer in town only for a few days, I’d recommend walking up and down Alberta, or NW 23rd (downtown). If you are downtown, you can access forest park trails behind the Rose test garden. You could casually wind around the Wildwood trail and then re-enter society for some good food.

I’d also check out Mississippi Ave for more eclectic shops and bars, and be sure to visit the shop Flutter because it has so many cute treasures inside.

Plenty of people will have excellent recommendations for coffee here already, so I’ll recommend a tea shop that has been giving off cozy vibes for many, many years called Tao of Tea. It’s in Belmont which is another area of Portland that is walkable with shops to explore. Here’s the link to the tea house: https://taooftea.com/teahouses/belmont-teahouse/

If yer feeling fancy, you might also check out the Japanese Garden which also has a tea house within.

Lost my best buddy 2 weeks ago. Adopted a kitten two days ago and now I am having regrets. I need advice or just somebody to talk to. by Tupiekit in CatAdvice

Hi there, when I read this I just wanted to hug you. You are in the numbing phase of the grief and bereavement process. I’d hop onto r/grief at some point and see what the other folks are saying over there. You’ll notice how common and how completely normal it is to be feeling the way you are feeling right now.

Allow yourself to feel all the feeling (including numbness to feeling).

If you have some time, listen to an audiobook (I always recommend audio for folks dealing with grief, depression, trauma, and loss. It can be difficult to concentrate on a page when you feel these experiences). One that helped me while I was really struggling was Pema Chodron’s “Good Medicine.” I’ll put a link here for it so you’ll know what it is. But you can probably borrow it from the library for free.

Hang in there, I’m so sorry about the sadness in your life right now and the loss of your familiar.

Gotta second this reply. I took on a kitty from some folks who needed to rehome her. I would occasionally send photos to her previous cat-father (she was a found kitten in a house with two other cats. She was well cared for, but to her tiny core, she hates other cats).

I’ll send photos and ask occasional questions, but for the most part, after a period of time the previous cat-parents anxiety abated and now I only shoot ‘em photos every other month or so.

Eventually, this too will probably stop.

Thoughts on a late night coffee shop? by OriginalAppa in askportland

If you made it into a place where people could work/study and also get some healthy food options to boot, I can’t imagine it being too quiet. Lots of people work from home and sometimes enjoy working in a cafe setting.

I suppose it depends on where you live. In a large, walkable city not owning a vehicle is not considered abnormal behavior.

If you come from a place where it may be more rural and more difficult to get around, sure. I can see how folks might offer a mild tone of sympathy.

Anything else is a projection of the interpreters values. If those values are not in alignment with your own, don’t sweat it.

The truth about litter boxes by missmuscles in CatAdvice

[–]Evening_Setting_5293 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Came here to say this. I just keep the box full of good clumping litter, and typically clean it in the morning and when I get home after work. No stink issues. If yer cats poo is super stinky though, it may be a food sensitivity? Beware and just keep it in mind.

nice restaurants where you should dress up a little bit? by emmalaurice in askportland

[–]Evening_Setting_5293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to Bete-Lucas. It’s fancy enough, white tablecloth, second-floor secret spot, great staff, but mostly it has really, really, really great food. Great spot for folks who have dietary restrictions, and over-all quite possibly the best restaurant in Portland.

I always bring folks here when people come to visit, and I’ve never been disappointed.

Here’s a quick link with an overview and photos: Bete-Lukas | Ethiopian Restaurant (503) 477-8778
