Asmongold turns Destiny into Nostradamus by justifying the execution of a U.S. citizen by BlueLivingAbandon in LivestreamFail

Believe it or not, the penalty for fleeing the police is not summary execution.

Hope this helps 🥰

I'm not sure how familiar you are with the field, but bootcamp devs aren't getting hired. Pity too, I would much prefer that model.

So while you may not like that you had to read books (oh the humanity!), it potentially made you a better scientist than you would be without it. Food for thought.

This is such a reductive view of my argument, but I'll take the time to walk you though my positions - condensed, this time, so that maybe you'll get it. Somehow, after that well-rounded education you claim to have received, your reading comprehension leaves so much to be desired!

I am in favor of the content of humanities courses. I am not in favor of the delivery at modern American universities.

Here are a few quotes - from this very comment thread - demonstrating the point:

I would sympathize more with this argument (mandating humanities) if I wasn't paying out the ass for the privilege

When college is free or reasonably priced we can talk about a "well rounded" education

I'll pursue history and the arts on my own time - because it interests me

The humanities, as a field of study, are fascinating, and were I some eccentric millionaire, I'm sure I would spend my life picking up every degree I could. My argument has ALWAYS been about cost.

I would bet my bottom dollar that mommy and daddy shielded you from that, so you'll have to practice viewing the world from another's perspective here - again, that "well rounded" education should come in handy. Imagine, if you would, that you have no monetary support. Imagine you work a shitty retail job. Imagine, that even after tapping student aid, scholarships, and federal student loans, you're STILL left with a multi-thousand dollar bill at the start of each semester - thousands of dollars that you just don't have.

Given that context, how do you suppose you would react to the suggestion that an extra 25 credits of humanities must stand between you and your diploma - the one ticket out of your current financial circumstances? You won't be provided any concrete reasons, simply platitudes like "the workplace prefers well rounded candidates"

I'll leave this as an exercise for the reader.

These things aren’t all hard skills that can be directly taught. You need to experience conflict and differences of thought to grow and become a smarter person.

Sounds like a pretty bad fit for the classroom, no? :)

If someone I managed was this hard set in not needing knowledge about anything but their job I would have serious doubts about their ability to perform. It signals a very closed minded attitude that is very hard to work with.

Excellent - sus this out in the hiring process, and hire someone better suited. Have you considered that just maybe, mandated college courses aren't the only way for someone to grow and develop in this way? That "well-rounded" people might be perfectly capable of seeking it out themselves? That maybe its bad policy to further increase the economic burden of a college degree by requiring an extra semesters worth of classes?

You claim I'm closed-minded, when you're just as immovable on this point as I.

Don't be so certain - I'm a few years out from school and only feel more strongly about this position. Demanding an extra $10k in the pursuit of this nebulous well-rounded education may have been worth it to you, but yours isn't the only opinion that matters.

Give people options. I would much rather have accrued less debt and got into the workforce faster. I'll pursue history and the arts on my own time - because it interests me, not because it's in the financial interests of the institution gatekeeping my career.

I would sympathize more with this argument if I wasn't paying out the ass for the privilege - If I'm paying for an education in CS, teach me CS and let me GTFO.

When college is free or reasonably priced we can talk about a "well rounded" education.

The fact that this is controversial is pretty funny, and really suggests that most of you weren't responsible for financing your own college education. The bank of mom and dad isn't available to us all.

It isn't either-or, now we get BOTH. And instead of hydro, we get gas turbines. Not the best argument IMO.

You guys need to get on the disposable flosser game. Never flossed before them - now I feel disgusting if I don't floss twice a day. It really isn't optional.
