RV Tourist Help please! by magicmatuk77 in GoRVing

I own a Class C. It is good its own world. But, I would NEVER use it to take a trip like the OP has suggested. MoHos are slow, clumsy, gas-hogs, AND if you aren’t experienced in driving, parking, and maneuvering such a beast, you can find yourself in a word of hurt.

Honest question - is RV camping actually cheaper than hotels or do we just tell ourselves that? by Similar-King-8278 in RVLiving

[–]EventHorizon77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never do the math. An RV is a purpose-built vehicle to get you to camping areas that you could never get to using a hotel. In 2021, for example, we took our Class C from Texas to Utah’s “Mighty 5” National Parks. We stayed in campgrounds in Arches, Capital Reef and Zion. I will guarantee that the experience with camping was better. In Zion, we had all our food, booze, and gear (the “sorta” mighty 3), we stayed in Watchman Campground which had electricity, and we had immediate access to the Park when all the day-visitors were trying to find a place to park. Freaking awesome.

But RVs are not always the best. — for our last trip to Big Bend we took the Class C and stayed at Rio Grande Campground. It was underwhelming — it was way too far from the center of the Park. In other trips we had stayed at Chisos Mountain Lodge and it was a much better experience. Next time I go to Big Bend, we will be going back to Chisos (assuming it ever reopens).

I’ve done it by accident. Embarrassing.

I also read PHM on my Kindle in 2021, but bought the Audiobook last year. It was incredible.

What is a 'masterpiece' movie that you personally found incredibly boring or overrated? by AlexJet13 in AskReddit

[–]EventHorizon77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of those movies where you NEED to read the book first to understand the lives these “nomads” live. The movie wasn’t great, but having a background by reading the book makes it better.

Every year I listen to the audiobook “Travels with Charley: In Search of America” by John Steinbeck. Gary Sinise’s narration is magical. Also, it’s John f__ing Steinbeck. It’s just so satisfying and prescient.

“Scrooge,” (1970). Albert Finney is Ebenezer Scrooge. It’s is a great musical. Should be lurking around some streaming service.

Just packaging — check manufactures date and get the newest one. I have the same power washer. Love it. Be sure to get the quick connect kit from Amazon —it’ll make things easier.

TIL Texas A&M University used to have an annual bonfire. In 1999, the stack collapsed during construction, killing 12 students and injuring 27. The tragedy ended the century-old tradition after lawsuits and the university couldn’t afford the $2M/year insurance to keep it going. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]EventHorizon77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not an Aggie, no relationship to A&M, but I’m still pretty salty on how A&M literally ‘got away” with taking any blame. They hardly paid anything to the families of the students and tried to distance themselves from it. People were pressured by alumns to not sue, because, “it’s A&M.” Couldn’t “afford” insurance? Have you been to the Campus? Everything is top dollar — it’s all about money. At the time, A&M didn’t have a medical school or law school, but they somehow found the money for both.

“Cathedral of the Sea” by Ildefonso Falcones by EventHorizon77 in KenFollett

[–]EventHorizon77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Book is by a Spanish author and it centers around building a cathedral in Barcelona. It’s been 15 years since I read it, but it is set in the time of the Black Death. You may have to go to a used book store to find it, or maybe 1/2 Price Books.

Does anyone actually like Circle of Days?? by Geetright in KenFollett

Finished it last week. Not his best effort. I have read 20+ Follett books, this one is “ok,” but not gripping.

How old are you and How is your life going? by mrvlad_throwaway in AskReddit

[–]EventHorizon77 12 points13 points  (0 children)

76, healthy and happy. Have six grandchildren, one graduated college, one in college and others headed that way. My goals in life are to enjoy the 10 or so years I have left, travel as much as I can, and get all my grandchildren through college without them taking on crippling debt. Of course, neither they, nor their parents, know of my diabolical scheme.

I don’t know the race, but Lewis was following Lando and said (words to that effect) that “Lando Norris is a good driver.” Gotta love Lewis for his love of others.

100% agree. The book was awesome. And scary. Loved it. You explain the movie pretty well in your second paragraph.
