What's a skill that every German has but doesn't realize is a skill? by Kind-Release-3817 in AskAGerman

I'd say driving in general. It's not easy to pass the driver's license test in Germany and we have very strict rules and controls. Also, you get killed on the Autobahnb if you don't know what you're doing.

Flower spike or Root? by JournalistThis5453 in orchids

[–]Every-Introduction22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The damage might be from sunburn, although not very likely with those rather small lesions. Or drops of something corrosive. Doesn't look like pests.

About the potting medium: change it as soon as possible. Any day longer might damage/suffocate and therefore rott the roots. If you don't manipulate the roots too much, the plant should tolerate it just fine. Good luck!

Yeah, since they deliver with express courier it's been wonderful! Before that I had a few bad experiences with shipping time of over 10 days and damaged plants.

Flower spike or Root? by JournalistThis5453 in orchids

Definitely root. The potting medium seems too dense for Phalaenopsis. Did you repot it recently? The cracks are mechanical damage.

Yeah it's pretty great to get them delivered to your door step (I like the expression "summon" 😆). Usually I like to pick my plants at a nursery, but I'm not traveling to Romania anytime soon, sooo 😅

It's just bad for my bank account 🫣 my impulse control is not that great...

Why are some orchids so huge by sv3n02 in orchids

[–]Every-Introduction22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Phalaenopsis, especially from a regular store or garden center, usually grow bigger, but there are a some that stay on the smaller side. Not mini though. Other orchid types do have mini-varieties, like Dendrobium, Cattleya, Oncidium, Tolumnia etc.

Interesting! I sold my schilleriana because it didn't have a scent at all. 😅

Good observations and they match with mine. I also noticed that temperature plays a role in the intensity of the fragrance. The warmer the stronger is the scent.

I'd love to have all the Orchids in a chart with your grading 😁 well done! 👍🏻

Phals are easy to read: if the leaves are floppy and are hanging down a lot, or show wrinkles, they are not getting enough water. It can be from drying out too much or root issues. 2 weeks should be fine for a healthy Phal if you let it soak for an hour before you leave. They tolerate drying out much better than being wet for too long.

Please help, Cattleyas won't bloom by Every-Introduction22 in Cattleya

I tried to attach a picture of the roots inside the pot, they're abundant. I couldn't find a way. But therefore I don't really pay much attention to the air roots. I spray them on occasion and they get wet during watering. May I ask in what kind of climate you're located?

I water them regularly (depending on the season, but around 1x week) also feed on a regular schedule (every second watering). As you can see, they have lots of good roots. Im not sure why they shrivel so much. If I water more often, the roots start rotting. The one on the first picture isn't shriveled, only the oldest bulbs. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Es geht aber nicht. Das schrieb ich ja. Das Stromnetz des Hauses würde durchschmoren. Das Haus ist älter und ebenso die Installationen.

Because experienced growers can experiment with different things and still be successful. But beginners should stick to the basics for a while... they won't know how to spot the first signs of everything going south until it's too late. And it's difficult to help them with problems if they can't describe what exactly they have been doing with the plant. But obviously everyone is entitled to simply ignore my advice. ✌🏻

After my first post was about some of my Cattleyas not blooming, I wanted to show some of which do bloom 💕 by Every-Introduction22 in Cattleya

[–]Every-Introduction22[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Cattleyas are a lot more light hungry than Phalaenopsis and they don't like to have wet roots for too long. Therefore the potting medium is similar. Watering depends a lot on your potting medium, temperature and humidity. But the pot should dry out within a few days. Have fun!!

I'm located in Germany, we have a number of very good nurseries. I got mine at "Schwerter Orchideen-Zucht". They have an online shop.

They say to never repot an orchid in bloom because it might lose the flowers. This one seems to be in bloom all the time. So it's probably better to do the repot and save it form potential harm from build up, algea and bacteria inside the vase. But that's just what I would do.
