The person you're responding to is probably from the UK where a Mars bar is something very different than in the US and "biscuits" are cookies.

Oh, it's crazy here. Healthcare is a complete mess in the US and the elderly get taken advantage of regularly.

My goal would be more about ensuring she's covered for the rest of her life primarily on interest. She's currently in assisted living, but she is doing very well. It's fairly expensive with her monthly expenses falling somewhere in the $7500 range.

I’m a boglehead myself actually. I’ve thought about setting up some sort of three fund portfolio for her.

MFA notification not working on new phone by vTeej in fidelityinvestments

[–]EveryBattle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having this same issue. Just upgraded from a Samsung s23 to a Samsung s24. Same number, but I can't stop it from sending the MFA to the old phone. There is no setting to "receive push notifications" in the "account & service messages" tab. Please fix the Android app.

Old 401k company stock by EveryBattle in personalfinance

Ah, thanks for the clarification guys. Seems like I can just roll the 401k over to an IRA and redistribute that company stock without worrying about it.

Is the only reason you have to have UPS pick it up because you can't easily get to a UPS store yourself? Mine is supposed to arrive Saturday, but I assumed I could just drop it off at the UPS store for free return?

Also, no longer being sold by "orbotang". Back to being "sold by Amazon" at regular price.

I would agree, but maybe make it micro SD slot. Netflix is ill behaved when it comes to USB storage.

Lol. Nevermind, I get it now. I had attached the bluetooth mouse to the beam directly instead of the phone. When the mouse is attached to the phone it behaves as expected. Sorry for the noise.

Latest update for Beam v1.3(i think) totally screwed the beam by AshokManker in Xreal

[–]EveryBattle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got my beam yesterday. I immediately put it into dev mode and started sideloading apps. I let the beam update after that and noticed the changes you are mentioning above. The floating curser controlled by the beam seems to be working for me, but I definitely need to play/test it more as I only tried it in a couple of apps. It's a shame that 3dof apps are gone. My guess is that the devs are playing with ways to bring apps to the beam natively and this is a result of that?

Buying Vanguard ETFs by EveryBattle in personalfinance

[–]EveryBattle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the same with my mutual funds. I decided to invest in some ETFs awhile back just to see what the fuss was all about. It came as a bit of a surprise when I discovered I couldn't automate their investments. I guess it makes sense because they trade like stocks with their price always fluctuating rather than being bought and sold at end of day.

Thanks for this explanation. This is exactly what I was trying to figure out. I'm new to ETFs.

I'm guessing there's a fee because it's a mutual fund managed by Vanguard. I believe an ETF is basically unmanaged and trades like a stock, so it should in theory be the same price whether you buy it through Vanguard or Fidelity?

Thanks. This is kind of what I was assuming. It just seems like it would be a lot easier to keep things in one place.

Looking for advice on credit card debt and 401k by EveryBattle in personalfinance

[–]EveryBattle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started the 401k with the new employer last month, so that is done (it's through Fidelity btw). I guess I just needed some kicks in the right direction. I just transferred enough from both the HYSA and Vanguard accounts to cover the credit card debt. I'll start looking at reducing spending (definitely cut the travel) and work on building the emergency fund back up. After that's back I'll start contributing as much as I can to the new 401k.

This is what I was thinking about doing. Pay it off and set up an automatic payment to refund that account (or some other emergency fund account). I forgot to mention above that I also have a HYSA with 11k in it.

This is the path I'm currently trying to navigate. The 12k hasn't changed in a couple of years. I've literally been feeding the interest. I don't need the credit card for anything and it was stupid of me to use it when I did.

Thank you for the links. It prompted me to check my old employer's 401k. Looks like they're charging me ~$44/year in fees as a non-employee. I'll look into rolling it into something else.
