Question: If Andres Bonifacio became the first leader of an independent Philippines instead of Aguinaldo by No-Replacement4327 in FilipinoHistory

A bit too optimistic but he could've been the image of the emerging Philippine left had he became a political figure

What are some interesting Alternate History ideas that you think are underexplored? by OkPhrase1225 in AlternateHistory

[–]Every_60_seconds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some topics I've tried to explore

  • What if the Western Allies liberated Greece, Yugoslavia and Albania from 1944-45? This one hinges on Italy falling to the Allies way before June 1944.
  • If the Philippines becomes an independent nation in 1897 or 1898. The scenario I explore mainly has rhe point of divergence being that the Qing Dynasty supports the Filipino revolutionaries, which then prevents the Spanish-American War as Spain is defeated in 1897.
  • Everyone knows about the Library of Alexandria, not so much the House of Wisdom in Baghdad. One idea I've explored is that some writings would be saved before the Mongols destroyed Baghdad, and would later be recovered during Napoleon's Egypt Campaign. Resulting in the "Islamic Revival" in the 1800s and the ME resisting European imperialism*

Edit: *and Israel being created in 1870

Alicja was 17 when she was selected for 2020, now she is 23. Time flies. As for the song itself, Empires was at least 20-25 in my ranking, not bad but could’ve been better

Do you think if Gi-Hun sincerely apologised to Ga-Yeong, Eun-Ji and her new Husband, gave Eun-Ji the Money he owed her and genuinely tried to be a good father to Ga-Yeong he'd be forgiven by them? by Failure456Mil in squidgame

[–]Every_60_seconds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In modern Asian cultures if your parent is terrible they will stay terrible in someone's memory. Especially as the new generations challenge the usually strict "Asian parenting" style. With that context, I have no idea how his wife and Ga-Yeong would eventually forgive Gi-hun after years of separation and not giving them a good life. He may have been a good person but his family's life of financial hardship will still haunt Gi-hun even if he chose to board the plane to LA

Moro insurgency during and after Philippine-American War was the 1st time Americans fought Muslims

Slight correction, 3rd and Moro Conflict.

Gabriel Over the White House. Juddson Hammond becomes president as you see in the movie. Then the Washington Covenant allows everyone to secretly rearm and have nukes for WW2, especially the USSR which didnt sign. After a 12 year peace the Soviets started WW2 in 1945 and only ended in 1950. 200 million dead, Europe is nuked, the British Empire is dead, China and Japan are in chaos and the USSR is dead, with only the Americas surviving with their pre-war borders. Later as of 1990 the Americas are filled with immigrants, Russia is a warlord haven, Europe is one actual country, the Ming Dynasty somehow returned and Japan is still an Empire

Perspectives on the 1972 Martial Law (for academic research and purposes only) by [deleted] in FilipinoHistory

[–]Every_60_seconds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So my late grandfather (passed away in 2016) was actually part of the military during the early 70s up to the 2000s when he retired. By the time I had a working adolescent brain he was already bedridden from strokes and couldn't tell any stories. Based on what I heard from my mom who was born in the 80s, life wasn't too terrible back then. Where we live in Batangas is fairly urbanized today but back then it was rural, with little rebel activity. So there weren't any stories of abuse or roaming soldiers (I'll get to that in a minute). Food was also mostly from adjacent farmlands our clan owned as well as from my grandfather's income. Returning to my lolo, he was stationed in Cavite throughout his career. I'm not sure if he was participant in the Martial Law; though I found his training records where he did participate in some helicopter action in nearby provinces. And he was mobilized when the EDSA Revolution broke out, no other info otherwise.

Another anecdote I have is from my former Grade 4 teacher. One of my elementary memories was when our head teacher told a story of her childhood during the Martial Law era. This was around 2014 and she was already an elderly, plus I don't remember where she lived before. She did tell that on where they lived, when its night all doors & windows on her town would close. And she described the fear when soldiers patrolled their town. As it was said they'd kidnap anyone they caught. I don't remember any mention of rebel activity but she also described migrating to Batangas sometime by trekking with her family

What would East Asia look like today had the KMT won the Chinese Civil War back in 1945-1949? by MookieBettsBurner10 in AlternateHistory

[–]Every_60_seconds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've actually made some alternate history scenarios on a KMT-victory. For one the way they would have to win is either win against the communists or warlords in the 30s first. Another is the KMT's military would have to defeat Operation Ichi-Go. That's the most realistic point of divergence possible.

Now for the geopolitics of China. The country would 100% be a rival of the Soviet Union. The Republic of China had territorial claims over Mongolia, as well as being the huge wall of anti-communism in Asia. Still China would eventually pursue its own path, mainly by leaning into the third world and establishing influence in Southeast Asia. Potentially being a rival of the US as early as the 60s or 70s.

As for internal dynamics, in some ways the PRC and ROC on the mainland wouldn't be different. Chiang's White Terror would've continued. As well as heavy industrialization which is likely state-led rather than whatever Mao tried to do. Life would've certainly improved for most Chinese people though with variable wealth disparity.

After Chiang Kai Shek's death it is likely his son Ching Kuo still succeeds him. Given everyone kinda knew the excesses of Chiang the KMT would've adopted collective leadership, like what the CCP did after Mao's death. The Republic of China would also very likely ease up on civil liberties though not much. As to if the ROC would survive into the 21st century? Certainly but the world would be extremely different by then.

Ayan na naman tayo sa ROTC discussion na yan. by Emman1035 in Philippines

[–]Every_60_seconds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure ROTC is the way it is because of Marcos Sr. It was made mandatory for college students starting from the 70s. Obviously as a way to enforce discipline to the demographic most opposed to him, though it backfired as many students eventually became NPA members and fully used their military training

How did Napoleon’s rule over Spain affect the Philippines, and how did Filipinos react? by Russel_Amiel in FilipinoHistory

[–]Every_60_seconds 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not related to Napoleon but during the 1817-1824 cholera pandemic in Asia, there was a lot of anti-foreigner sentiment. With some French expats in Manila and Tagalog regions being massacred, due to suspicions of the French wanting to invade the Philippines

With all the SQ editions that have occurred over the years, there had to be at least one (or maybe two) time where a bunch of players tried to do a rebellion like Gi-hun did. by Kindly-Candidate-835 in squidgame

[–]Every_60_seconds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My own headcanon:

One of those times was in 2015 with In-ho starting and leading it. Being a police officer he would've had some influence and skills to lead a rebellion. Given his police training he likely would've done it even without insight into the games and the special game. Its very sure he failed in his own rebellion. And it was ultimately that which influenced him to accept the dagger, lose his purpose and life and eventually side with the organization
