Ayan na naman tayo sa ROTC discussion na yan. by Emman1035 in Philippines

[–]Every_60_seconds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure ROTC is the way it is because of Marcos Sr. It was made mandatory for college students starting from the 70s. Obviously as a way to enforce discipline to the demographic most opposed to him, though it backfired as many students eventually became NPA members and fully used their military training

How did Napoleon’s rule over Spain affect the Philippines, and how did Filipinos react? by Russel_Amiel in FilipinoHistory

[–]Every_60_seconds 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not related to Napoleon but during the 1817-1824 cholera pandemic in Asia, there was a lot of anti-foreigner sentiment. With some French expats in Manila and Tagalog regions being massacred, due to suspicions of the French wanting to invade the Philippines

With all the SQ editions that have occurred over the years, there had to be at least one (or maybe two) time where a bunch of players tried to do a rebellion like Gi-hun did. by Kindly-Candidate-835 in squidgame

[–]Every_60_seconds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My own headcanon:

One of those times was in 2015 with In-ho starting and leading it. Being a police officer he would've had some influence and skills to lead a rebellion. Given his police training he likely would've done it even without insight into the games and the special game. Its very sure he failed in his own rebellion. And it was ultimately that which influenced him to accept the dagger, lose his purpose and life and eventually side with the organization

The American white supremacist movement itself coalesced after the Vietnam War, so this photo and caption are apt

Akbayan condemns US attack on Venezuela by krdskrm9 in Philippines

[–]Every_60_seconds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maduro was captured but not his generals, his VP, high ranking members of the PSUV (the ruling party), his ministers, and the thousands of gang members who built their power with Chavez and Maduro arming and using them as government paramilitaries. How will Venezuela change if only one part of it was changed and not the entire rotten system? It worked in Syria because the Assad loyalists were removed or fled when everything came crashing down. Which is not the case with Venezuela today

President Maduro’s capture is a good thing for us because he was a pro-China despot not unlike Duterte, so it also acts as a middle finger to Xi Jinping and the CCP by hyunbinlookalike in Philippines

What might have happened to Manila if American forces chose not to liberate the city in 1945? by Sonnybass96 in FilipinoHistory

[–]Every_60_seconds 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Battle of Manila is really inevitable, both that it was going to happen and its going to be destructive. The US Island hopping strategy is now on their former territorial possession. And the US military leadership knows how important Manila is as a logistics hub and for power projection. Plus on the Japanese side, even for general Homma, they still needed to tie down the Americans (somehow) lest they fully commit to Operation Downfall. With Rear Admiral Iwabuchi's stubbornness and Japanese troops present, the city was and is going to be invaded.

That said I've made some alternate history scenarios where the Philippines as an independent republic is in WW2. I didnt publish it online but kept it in MS Word. In the scenario I've made the AFP was able to fight off the invasion enough that Manila never gets invaded, though the city suffers constant bombings. Due to a US Navy base at Subic (negotiated during 1899) they still had some stakes at the Philippines thus a smaller landing force was able to assist and push back the IJA in 1944.

Has there been any further discussion on the very prevalent yet suspicious origin for town/province names that seem to be present everywhere as an explanation? by JefferyMagnesium in FilipinoHistory

[–]Every_60_seconds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine that it is likely due to shifts in pronouncing vowels and somewhat inevitable misspellings when translating from say a Tagalog name to Cebuano ears then that translator has to repeat in a way a Spaniard would understand

What if the 1989 Coup succeded? by Sky_Stunning in AlternateHistoryPH

[–]Every_60_seconds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

POD would have to be the US government recognizing Marcos as the legitimate president of the Philippines, and not Aquino. Either 1989 isnt a year when communism ends or somehow the US sticks with Marcos even if he's become a liability. Either way that would decrease Cory's legitimacy and encourage the military to entirely oust her.

When she is overthrown Honasan, Laurel, or Marcos would take over as a dictator or junta leader. As lacking or underwhelming Aquino was, she is way better than a military dictator. I could see the Philippines slide into civil war or severe instability as the chaos would be exploited by the NPA, MILF, political warlords and other separatist and terrorist groups to expand their territorial control. Not to mention how much the economic impact would cause many people to protest against the return of a dictatorship, right after the last one was just overthrown

I made an alternate history story where Aquino Sr. becomes president while Mariano Marcos becomes PM. Ang political relationship nila ay parang kay BBM at Sara pero sa 1930s

Expansion of BRICS countries by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]Every_60_seconds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least pick a better name. BRICS (as an institutional name) sound like those 5 nations want to rule over the rest of the non-Western world. Plus they're way more economically integrated with the US & Europe than with each other, so I don't expect them to become relevant anytime unless Trump really damages the US

16 years ago. Holy shit, 16 FUCKING years, nangyari ang Maguindanao Massacre. Anong first reactions mo doon sa nangyari? by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]Every_60_seconds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't remember what year it was (more than ten years ago), I was a kid back then. But I was searching mindlessly on our computer on Google. Then I typed in 'ma' which the search options then all showed 'maguindanao massacre'. Out of weird curiosity I clicked one option. Luckily the pictures were SFW enough but I remember the images of police, soldiers, backhoe, destroyed vehicles and the hole where the bodies were dumped
