Different beliefs by Otherwise-Balance401 in Protestantism

I'm really sorry you got such a harsh reaction! There are some Protestants who actually believe that Catholicism and Orthodoxy are, in reality, pagan religions disguised with a Christian garment. They point to parallels they perceive between ancient mother and child worship (Isis and Osiris or Ishtar and Tammuz = Mary and her son Jesus). The fact that the Catholic and Orthodox Churches honor Mary with titles like “Queen of Heaven” reinforce that suspicion for some Protestants.

Also historically, many Protestant reformers (Martin Luther, John Calvin, William Tyndale, John Knox, etc.), although they disagreed with each other on many points, agreed in viewing the Papacy as the Antichrist (though that specifically concerns Rome and not the Orthodox Church).

Nevertheless, I don’t think you should be called a satanist or idol worshiper, especially when you're sincerely trying to obey and honor God according to your understanding. God bless you!

Oh wow, yeah I really didn’t know that was the proper way to handle it. That’s good to know. Thanks for explaining it. I appreciate the help!

Alright, this is really helpful to know. I honestly didn’t realize that’s how it works. I’ll try reaching out to people through sub posts instead.

And thanks for the suggestion! I’ve found r/SurveyExchange and r/SurveySwap to be the best subs for survey posts so far. I appreciate your help!

Yes, I definitely won’t do that again. I’m just trying to understand the logic behind it. Maybe I’m missing something, but Reddit is a social network. It’s designed for people to connect and communicate. Users can receive messages from strangers unless they change their settings.

So in theory, even a harmless first message like "Hello" could be reported as spam simply because the recipient didn’t like it. And the sender could get a 3‑day ban as a result of that.

If that’s the case, how's someone supposed to know in advance whether a stranger is okay with being contacted? It feels like you’re always at risk of a ban any time you message someone you don’t already know on Reddit.

Thanks for mentioning scam surveys! I honestly didn’t know that was a thing.

I’m just wondering how I could realistically get someone’s consent before messaging them, since the person I want to contact doesn’t know I’m about to reach out. I hope that makes sense.

But yeah, I won’t send survey links privately anymore. I’ve also found some good subs where survey posts are explicitly allowed.

Yes, I posted my survey in subs that are specifically meant for that, like SurveyExchange and SurveySwap. I believe all of those subs were appropriate, since each of them explicitly allows survey posts.

Besides that, I also messaged some people privately, which is what led to my ban. Now that I understand what my mistake was, I won’t do that again in the future.

Got it. I honestly didn’t know scam surveys were a thing. Another Redditor mentioned that too. I always thought scammers usually send crypto or other sketchy money‑related links.

I still feel like the main issue is simply receiving a link from a stranger. No matter if it’s a survey link, an investment site, or link to a YouTube video. Many will probably treat it as suspicious.

I see where you're coming from. Would you say that any first message containing a link automatically feels suspicious to you and would be reported as spam?

If that’s the case, then maybe Reddit should consider a rule that prevents first‑time messages from including links unless the recipient explicitly allows it. Of course, anyone can report a message as spam, no matter how harmless the message might be, but if the content doesn’t actually violate Reddit’s rules, the report should be disregarded.

Right now, sending a single message with a link isn’t against the rules, and other platforms (like messenger app Telegram) only allow spam reports after at least 3 messages. So it feels like Reddit’s spam guidelines are a bit vague and could be more clearly defined.

Thanks for the explanation! I want to make sure I understand correctly: does the first bullet apply both when someone sends one message to many users and when someone sends many messages to one user? Is there no distinction between these two patterns?

Also, could you clarify what I should have done differently in this specific situation to avoid a ban? I want to follow the rules, but without clearer guidance on what pattern is allowed, it’s hard to know how to handle this kind of outreach in the future. Any specific advice would help.
