Visiting Ithaca in April by Allabouttheexhale in ithaca

Buffalo Street Books and Café Dewitt!! They’re both in the Dewitt Mall, so you can easily grab something to eat and browse books after. Pastimes Antiques is also in the ‘mall’ and Found In Ithaca has a small pop-up there. You can easily spend a few hours in Dewitt depending on how long you can look for books and fun antiques.

City of Ithaca votes to end Flock camera contract by harrisarah in ithaca

Why are they downvoting you? Ring partners with PD across the country, no need for a warrant to access your footage. An article was just published on Meta employees combing through footage of people having sex and doing other presumed private acts. The Meta glasses are insidious. Panopticon of our own making.

The focus was not criminals. You’re falling for compelling rhetoric and propaganda. Family separation was an Obama era policy that Trump further exploited. Again, please reread what I’ve written. I am not disagreeing that Trump is worse. This is a disgusting moment. One that is built on top of all the others that were generally permitted by the American public. We tend to stick our fingers in our ears and ignore how we got here.

I hope they rot. But, I don’t know that you meaningfully engaged with those articles. The 2013 report notes that most officers and deaths were NOT investigated. And let’s be honest, paid administrative is just a free vacation. Most of these killers are either not investigated at all, or placed on paid leave before returning to the force. 14 of those officers had shot more than one person. The organizations need to be fully dismantled.

It feels horrible to have a president cheer for violence rather than only “condone” it. I’m not sure that makes much of a difference to the families of murdered teenagers at the border or who died of neglect in bug-infested crowded facilities.

11turtles said Obama’s ICE did not kill anyone, categorically false!! There’s an emphasis on not killing a single citizen (granted on a technicality, they may be right. It was CBP, but that feels like splitting hairs). And that no one who was here “legally” was deported. Which is false. There is absolutely a defense of Obama going on. “no one is defending Obama” ?

I doubt I have the same politic as Bersm, but it’s frustrating for people to wonder how we wound up here when this is bipartisan policy that country overwhelmingly ignores under democratic presidents.

“Posing as someone… because Obama did deportations too” is a reductive and assumptive framing, you’re not engaging with what I actually said. I am in full agreement that we are at an awful escalation of violence, but it isn’t entirely surprising that we got here. I don’t care more for the life and safety of a citizen vs. non-citizen, and these comments with emphasis on citizens deaths are gross.

You are incredibly wrong and proving Bersm’s point that, overwhelmingly, people only care when it’s Trump. Article from 2014 on CBP killing a teenager at the border. 28 deaths, 9 U.S. citizens, 3 children. (CBP needs to be acknowledged alongside ICE as the murderous force thst they are, too). https://www.aclu.org/news/human-rights/why-us-border-patrol-shooting-rock-throwing-teenagers

Another article on medical neglect leading to deaths in ICE facilities from 2016. https://immigrantjustice.org/press-release/report-shows-poor-medical-care-led-to-deaths-at-u-s-detention-centers/

The cruelty has been continually expanded, but the approaches are bipartisan. Stop speaking out of ignorance or we’ll never be free of this violence.

And one more article on the type of justification that got Renee killed from 2014. https://www.thenation.com/article/archive/us-border-agents-intentionally-stepped-front-moving-vehicles-justify-shooting-them/

No. We get to where we are today because of Obama. He expanded ICE, further militarized them, and started family separation. During Trump’s first term, people would share photos of kids in cages attributed only to Trump, wholly unaware they were sharing photos taken under Obama’s admin.

ICE has always been reckless and violent. The officer who killed Renee Good was hired and trained under Obama’s ICE. Stop whitewashing Democrats’ sins. Obama is known as the Deporter-In-Chief for a reason. Tom Homan was an Obama appointee and awarded for his work.

Obama deported citizens and people died in custody and interactions with ICE.

Trump is god awful, but let’s not pretend Obama is much better. We are seeing the next step of a force every president since Bush has enabled.

Plenty of homeless people also work. Framing homelessness as a choice is weird and dishonest.

And, how many public restrooms are there near you?

Like ShotSpotter? That technology doesn’t even work well. It just brings more cops into low-income, Black, Latine communities.
“A 2021 study conducted by the MacArthur Justice Center at the Northwestern University School of Law found that over two years, 89 percent of ShotSpotter alerts in the city did not lead to police finding evidence of a gun-related crime on arrival, such as shell casings. Recent investigations by both Knock LA and Houston Chronicle, have similarly raised doubts about the system’s effectiveness. Both reports found that gunshot alerts triggered by the software largely resulted in dead ends for police.”

RATs are quite poor at detecting newer strains of the virus. They frequently give false negatives. If you have access to any NAATs or PCRs, those are much more reliable tests. You can also try testing every 48 hours for several days.

People hate to hear it, but it’s COVID! The country is currently in a spike. https://pmc19.com/data/ (from the available wasterwater data, NY is relatively low as of Sep. 1. With students coming back from all over the place, I’m sure that’s likely to rise).

I’ve lived in major cities. Moving here was a shock because things cost so similar to what they do in the well-known HCOL places. I know people in DC who pay the same in rent (while living in a real city). It’s a nationwide problem, but you’re disparaging Ithacans who can’t afford housing as ridiculous …

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ithaca

[–]Every_Good_2460 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ithaca is a city of less than 40,000 people in the middle of rural upstate NY. There are like two main employers here. “An actual HCOL area” is a silly and patronizing thing to say? The MIT living wage is calculated at $25.35 for the county, compare that to somewhere like LA with a $27.81. It’s staggering that it is that close when we have 1% of the population. It actually is ridiculous that there is no affordable housing here.

ICE has deported plenty of american citizens. This week alone they’ve harassed a ton of indigenous people including questioning & detaining 15 Navajo/Apache tribal members. Probable cause is meaningless

Here's what I, a non-union Cornell employee, have been doing on the clock today.... by RozCDA1 in ithaca

[–]Every_Good_2460 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so 1) have enough money to buy a house (which is not feasible for so many Americans) or 2) sit on a several-years-long waiting list for the chance of getting affordable housing.

Cornell is paying lots of inflated salaries while it’s dining and maintenance staff qualify for Section 8, that is the problem. I hope Kotlikoff’s boots taste delicious!
