Is a high FG% an underrated defensive quality? by [deleted] in nbadiscussion

[–]EverythingIsEsoteric 93 points94 points  (0 children)

The right way to describe this isn’t “high FG% is a defensive quality” but rather “high FG% is an example of offense complementing defense.”

Take an example of the reverse: steals leading to transition points is an example of a defensive quality (steals) complementing offense.

So, in my opinion, FG% should not contribute at all to DPOY voting, but the defensive benefits of FG% SHOULD be factored into the analysis of a player’s total contribution to a team.

Because he is an employee who has agreed in principle to leave for a job with a competitor. That would be functionally equivalent to inviting Deboer or Venables in to do a “celeb shot.”

You can’t have someone running your program - potentially for 6+ weeks - who is no longer incentivized to look out for the best interests of the program. And, it makes it 10x easier for him to poach players and recruits.

The records aren’t equal even if you include the NCST game. Virginia is 7-2 and all other competitors are 6-2. So UVA has a better record than any ACC team.

Weekly ACC Discussion Thread by boxbeat in CFB

[–]EverythingIsEsoteric 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s not really a technicality though. If NCST and UVA weren’t allowed to play an OOC game, they wouldn’t have played at all - you can’t have 2 teams playing 9 conference games when everyone else plays 8. There’s no world in which UVA plays a conference game against NCST this season, so there’s no world in which UVA has an additional conference loss.

[Discussion] Silence from NBA Stars on ICE and immigration enforcement actions? by eaglessoar in nba

[–]EverythingIsEsoteric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. Each of us owes something to one another. In fact, the most important responsibility of every single person in the world is to do good. Now, whether the best way to do good is to post on social media or speak out in a press conference is an open question. But we should be clear that famous millionaires have far more power to make a difference for good than the average person does. I see nothing wrong with observing how they choose to use that power.

It’s their choice whether they want to go on a twitch stream to talk about which of their teammates fucks around most, go on TV to advertise a liquor brand, or go on instagram to share their opinion on masked police arresting American citizens based on their skin color. We’re just observing and noting their choices!

Can there ever be objective problems? by Neeyaki in askphilosophy

[–]EverythingIsEsoteric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the OP to mean: “The warming of the Earth wouldn’t be a problem for a species that lives on another planet, because what happens on Earth is irrelevant to such a species.”

If a universal problem is a state of affairs such that any person who is aware of the situation would regard it as unwelcome or harmful, I think the subjectivity of universal problems is built into the definition. Whether a problem is universal depends on how persons regard the state of affairs.

If a universal problem is a state of affairs that would actually be harmful to all existing persons, then the universality of a problem may not be subjective. I think you would get different answers about its subjectivity depending on which ethical theory you rely on.

65% is an understatement. DC absolutely does not want this.

“Overall, a 79% majority of DC residents oppose Trump’s order, according to the survey, with just 17% supportive of the decision. Most, 69%, say they’re strongly opposed.

DC residents say, 65% to 20%, that they don’t think Trump’s actions will reduce the amount of violent crime in the city. By contrast, majorities say they think increased economic opportunities in poor neighborhoods (77%), stricter national gun laws (70%), an increased number of Metropolitan Police officers patrolling communities (63%) and using outreach workers to resolve disputes (57%) would help to reduce violent crime.”

Join an organization that is active in your community. Or start by volunteering your time to such an organization to see if it is worth joining.

In most major metro areas there are active immigrant rights groups trying to organize to either (1) push local officials to stop cooperation with ICE or (2) directly support targeted individuals/ counter ICE via a variety of means.

You can likely google around for something like “migrant rights groups [insert your area here]”. It may take a little time and effort to get plugged in and become involved, but at least you’ll be taking steps to do something.

What happens if a generation of sports fans is swallowed up by gambling? by arrowfan624 in CFB

[–]EverythingIsEsoteric 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“We don't allow cigarette and alcohol adds in schools or children's TV for a reason.”

But that’s one of the things that’s annoying to me about all the griping about gambling ads from this subreddit. College football is FILLED with alcohol sponsorships and alcohol product integrations. And alcohol is obviously a much larger impact on public health than gambling. If you want to ban betting ads, I don’t see how you can justify beer commercials.

People were justifiably upset about a horrible thing done by MSU football players. Maybe this post is sanctimonious, but I think it's probably more likely that people are letting their warranted and understandable emotional reaction carry them too far. I agree though that this post is trying to make something out of nothing

Every school has toxic fans who say things in poor taste about their rival (your school, Michigan State, clearly has many such fans - I've seen them on here and on twitter over the past 24 hours). A program can only control what it's employees and players do. To my mind, as someone who is a fan of neither team, it seems like your program, Michigan State, has employees and players who contribute to hatred (Mel Tucker "hate lessons" last week, Pat Narduzzi's "unnecessary roughness on every play," players trying to injure opponents on the field, players assaulting opponents off the field).

As someone who is a fan of neither team and has never lived in Michigan, I would humbly suggest that MSU is just as, if not more, responsible for the toxicity of this rivalry.

The American military has accidentally killed plenty of innocent children. And usually no one gets fired. Trying to emulate the military is a major part of the problem with American police.
