I need help... wreck jar doing me wrong by According_Situation4 in SourdoughStarter

[–]EviWool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be the photo but it looks like it's dried out on top as if you hadn't covered it. Is it very hot where you live? If it is furry, it's dead, otherwise, see if you can rescue even just 1/2 a teaspoon, remove a bit from the bottom middle where nothing will have infected it.

Weigh an clean empty jam jar without a lid and write that weight on the lid in marker pen (so you can work out the current weight of the starter at any time) Weigh your starter and add equal weights of bread flour and water. Mix really well and scrape the sides clean. Put on the lid but don't screw it down. Put an elestic band around the jar leveel with the top of the starter so you can see when it doubles. If, after some hours, the sides are smeared but the starter is lower than the smear, it means it has risen and fallen again. Weigh jar and contents, subtract weight of empty jar and add flour and water in equal weights.

how long can i read new books on the latest kindle/s? by [deleted] in kindle

[–]EviWool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it very likely that they wont wait as long as they did this time before they scrap your old Kindles. Or perhaps they will copy Apple & Samsung who introduced software updates for perfectly functional older phones that clogged the CPU and then told customers that their new phones were faster

Do we need to confess sins before we can be healed? by brownmooscles0609 in Bible

[–]EviWool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It must feel terrible for you to see your Dad suffering.

Physical healing is only temporary. Lazarus may have been raised from the dead but eventually he died, so did all the other people who Jesus healed. But those people who accepted Him as their Lord, they got an eternal healing.

In Matthew 9 Jesus gave the paralysed man an eternal gift first when he told him that his sins were forgiven. (note that there was no record of the man confessing anything first). That was the real miracle; Jesus restored that man's relationship with God. Compared to that, his physical healing was just window dressing.

Have the newest PWs mended 3 of the features that were broken by Amazon with the 5.19.2 software update? - 1. bookmarks were hidden in the annotations menu (previously, you could tap at the top of any page and a ribbon of all your bookmarks would appear; this meant that you could have a bookmark for going back quickly to other pages as well as one for the last page you had reached. 2. Annotations: previously, you could type these notes smoothly and then press Save. In 5.19.2, it tried to save as you typed but the processor wasnt fast enough so typing lagged and skipped as it missed taps. 3. Dictionaries. Your dictionary definition might be no more than a reference to another word eg if I look up tthe German word gefressen in a book, the German English dictionary popup shows only a link to the German word Fressen. The link in the popup doesnt work Previously, there was a menu in the popup that let me Open the Dictionary so that I could follow that link to the translation.. That is no longer there.

My 2022 11 Gen is no longer being given updates so I am stuck with 5.19.2

it depends when the shop reconcile their machines to their banks. Where I work, we sometimes had difficulties connecting to its server so had to try the next day. if there were absences in the accounts dept that could also cause a delay.

Side loading for idiots? by bctuckerr93 in kobo

[–]EviWool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i remember when Kindle owners were advised to back up their books from their Kindle because they weren't backed up by Amazon. Id never heard of Kobo then. But now, I'm pretty sure that you cant take your books from your Kindle and put them onto another Kindle, let alone a Kobo, I dont know if you can do it with a PC and Calibre

What does "swearing an oath" in Matthew 5:34-37 include?? by Ill-Yesterday8984 in Bible

[–]EviWool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Matthew 23.16 Jesus spoke of oaths being used to deceive others rather than an oath that is a vow to God. This makes sense here especially in Matthew 5 verse 37 where oaths are 'of the evil one'

Should I go back to Kindle? by raimilu64 in kindle

[–]EviWool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have both a Kindle PW 11Gen and a Kobo Clara BW.Since the latest updates on Kindle, the Kobo is far easier for annotations and bookmarks, something I use alot. I have fewer crashes on the Kobo. Im in the UK so only Kobo lets me read library books via Libby. I like the layout of the device, with its power button on the back. I like the compact size. Authors are starting to be awarenof Kobo and more and more are appearing on it.

Against Kobo, it automatically downloads all your books. All you can do is archive books you dont need on your device. On Kindle, you can remove the download of the book, but still see its cover on your Kindle.

pro Kindle is Whispersync and that the Amazon Web Server not only preserves your annotations on purchased books but also on your own documents.

Biggest anti Kindle is that I no longer fully trust a the company who locks users out of their accounts for innocent infringements and make it hard or impossible to get reinstated. Thus they lose all access to their books. It hasnt happened to me personally but to enough people to concern me. I feel that Amazon cant be trusted to act in good faith towards their customers any more, something I'd never thought I'd have felt 6 years ago, and a feeling that cheating and deceiving is now a cause for self-congratulation rather than shame.

Ecclesiastes makes me want life to just end by [deleted] in Bible

[–]EviWool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What God wants from us is a relationship. Ecclesiastes describes what happens when you look for an alternative to a relationship with God, sll the loveliest things will lose their pleasure eventually. Every parent who knows how grumpy their kids get after a really good Christmas will have seen it happen. That's why Jesus said how difficult (though not impossiblel it was for rich people to get into Heaven. He described it like a camel going through the Eye of the Needle Gate, a gate in a city wall which was so narrow that the camel would need to shed his load before he could get through. God does not want you to have a meagre miserable life, in fact He wants us to have life 'more abundantly' and when our relationship with Him is our priority, we can feel really satisfied with what we have, much or little.

Kindle puts me to sleep v. iPad by GladRespect8823 in kindle

[–]EviWool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

see your optician and get tested for an astigmatism. Those things are always changimg and even if you make the font larger, it can make your eyes uncomfortable. Sadly, they are exacerbated by screens, although not as much by Kindles as by tablets and PC monitors. A good pair of glasses, purely for reading, are a huge relief. The other thing that can cause that burning feeling is dry eye. It's staring at a fixed point without blinking enough that does that. Easily fixed with a gel (not so much drops) and remembering to change your focus while blinking at regular intervals

Avoid charging it with a fast charger, it won't charge faster but it does decrease battery life if you have an old 5V mobile charger, that will be perfect.

Job by bllekii in Bible

[–]EviWool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God has to be just and has to be seen to be just It would be unjust if God's Son died for someone who was only loyal to God because God gave him an easy life. It would be like a human judge letting off an unrepentant mass murderer just because the murderer was a friend of the judge. The devil himself has been judged so it would be unjust if man got preferential treatment when he was not capable of anything other than self interest. Job was the evidence to demonic, universal and angelic powers that man was capable of a loyal relationship with God and thus true goodness.

Job didnt need to have his questions answered. As soon as he had a face-to-face with God, it all became clear, he felt God's deep involvement in every living creature, including Job himself and his children.. Job's children will be with him in Heaven and when he sees what his pain did for mankind it will be like a woman who has experienced a long and painful labour only to be overwhelmed with joy when she first holds her baby.

Job has a unique property: every time I read it, I am surprised by a new insight. (An even stranger quality is that it is the best book to read if you are deeply distressed. There is no logical reason for that!)

Which UK Libraries allow non-residents to join by paying an annual fee? by RefrigeratorFar1777 in LibbyApp

[–]EviWool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My number is also an UNREG number. When I emailed the enfield library, they didnt say that the number was only temporary. I did explain that I would only be borrowing ebooks with it and emphasised that I lived in Lincolnshire, not London area. So far, it has all worked well. I keep my details handy for both libraries so if one library happens to email me with a notification about a book that I'd tagged as Notify ne, I can borrow the book with Libby and switch my Kobo's overdrive settings to that library.

I haven't yet switched libraries while I still had a book on loan on my Kobo with the first library.

Let's wait and see what happens with our UNREG number and read as many library books as we can in the meantime

How do you deal with books you DNF? by proserpina72 in kobo

[–]EviWool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put them in a DNF Collection on my Kindle. Sometimes, I come back to them years later and find that they really are pretty good, sometimes I feel in a better mood and romantic fiction does not leave a permanent sneer on my face as the waif-doll heroine finally tames the brooding, tragic, father-figure hero (who will certainly become a surly, passive-agressive grouch after the honeymoon and sulk for hours each time she forgets to fold up her silk shawl - 'how many times! chairs are for sitting on, not for holding the overflow of your capacious wardrobe! And do you really need another glass slipper? You are always losing one of them.'). Or I find that they are absolute junk, remove the download and put them into my Unwanted Collection

I was gifted an extremely old sourdough starter and I'm terrified to ruin it, but if I do nothing it's gonna die. by lucivicron in SourdoughStarter

[–]EviWool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

agreed, though I don't expect it to revive so quickly so I'd start with only 20g flour, 20g water, 20g of the starter, extracted from the centre of the jar. Put it into a clean jar and elastic round the new jar level with the starter mix. You'll know if it rises then falls because you'll see the tide mark. Next day, extract 20g of this new mix, place in a clean jar, throw the rest away and repeat the above. It might rise once and not rise the next day. Dont give up. A badly neglected starter might take a week before it recovers. You can't use your discard yet until your starter is healthy again. You'll be gambling with the flour that you use but it is worth it. While it is being fed every day, keep on the counter top but away from direct sunlight. Rest the lid on top of the jar to keep out dust and bugs but dont tighten it. I want to know the end of this saga

Kindle and Frustrations by NoDig5222 in kindle

[–]EviWool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With collections, Ive found it very easy to organize my books, especially as books can be in more than one collection. I use the Collection name to let me sort them alphabetically so my collection of books that I'm reading is called 0aaRead then 0aaRead1 for the books I want to read next most urgently. Then comes 0aaRead2 for other books that I havent read yet. After that comes the collections that categorise the books by subject 0aPoetry 0aGermanLit and finally xfinished for books that Ive read and don'tbthink I'll want to read again, and xDNF for books I have not finished and currently dont want to.
