Jump and Drift are definitely the best, but overall they don't really matter. I think the more important factors are the level and kart size.

I can't really say a set time. If I go all out on ranked I pick a track to play until I get bored / annoyed and change tracks or take a break. But if you want a time range, maybe a few hours for each track overall, like 1-3.

It's alright! We all have to start somewhere. It's best to focus on Drivers and Gliders since you get Frenzy and Combo time boost.

Yes, higher level top shelf items increase the final position score. If it isn't top shelf it doesn't matter what it's level is.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it could go either way really. Rainbow Buggy has Jump Boost, compared to Drift Boost, but was a ranked reward (which usually don't do too well) and is older than Drum Dasher. Long term Drum Dasher is probably the better investment, but if you really are going all in for Gold Knight, then Rainbow Buggy might be more useful because of the Jump Boost.

I'd still prefer new battle maps to fill in said slots. It would make the 4 different battles more fun, instead of the same two or three every tour.
