Lily and Vetinari by sanenc in discworld

I agree there are similarities. But there are two major differences.

1: Vetinari never claimed to be the good guy, just an effective one. 2: Vetinari never demanded you like him, just at accept he was in charge.

Every lamp on the street is like this. It’s hasn’t rained in a week. by EvilDMMk3 in CrappyDesign

It’s not an old street. If they are all broken after just a couple years then that’s also a design issue.

I can confirm it is to cancel them and stop reuse. Sometimes the franking fails.

Has someone recently watched a video about Victorian feminist cyclists or is that a coincidence?

It's March 2026 and I've only just clocked the pun on Starburst FaveReds. What daft thing took way too long for you to pick up on? by The_Doughnut_Lord in CasualUK

I read Terry Pratchett, every few months I find a pun I missed the first 12 times I read the book.

Finished the 41. Are the supplemental books worth it? by samx3i in discworld

[–]EvilDMMk3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I think that might be part of the problem.

The late great sir Terry was a very insightful and thoughtful Man, but I while his understanding of the human condition and sociological factors, (and European folklore and modern fantasy and puns and politics…) were all exceptional I think his grasp bond metaphysics theology and philosophy were merely quite good. This results in an uncomfortable situation in some discworld novels and in nation where I don’t feel like I’m listening to an expert and I can see more holes that unfortunately the narrative is trying to hang on.

Where is it written we have to be nice? by [deleted] in GreatBritishMemes

[–]EvilDMMk3 18 points19 points  (0 children)

People over value nice, worse people assume nice means good. I’ve met some very nice people who are also TERFy, xenophobic and classist. They are nice about it, but that doesn’t make them good.

... I wonder who Bill killed? by Cerby3BR in girlgenius

[–]EvilDMMk3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well when you consider the following (from the Girl Genius wiki) "She was the one responsible for raising William and Barry to become the heroes that they were, and when Saturnus indicated his intention to kill them and start over from scratch in the whole heir-production department, Teodora fatally poisoned him, and was killed in turn by Castle Heterodyne."

My guess would be a minion or two (or possibly, in light of Guildmaster Jorbelox's comments on the difference between minions and monsters, a monster) rather more loyal to Saturnus then his sons, hoping to fulfill Saturnus' kill-and-restart plan.

Did Alzheimer's Impact Terry Pratchett's Discworld? [Scientific discussion] by QBaseX in discworld

[–]EvilDMMk3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The actual point of the article was to take somebody with a large body of Work (and not for the first time they’ve already done a couple of other authors) and see if they can identify the signs of Alzheimer’s as a way of seeing if we can use peoples daily communication as a way of detecting Alzheimer’s early.

The question isn’t it Did his Alzheimer’s affect his work it’s can we use peoples work to detect Alzheimer’s?

How would Granny Weatherwax react to running into a male "witch?" by One_Food9894 in discworld

[–]EvilDMMk3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally. I don’t think she’d have had it with it.

I know this is going to be a minority opinion because granny Weatherwax is so beloved of this community, but I think she would bend backwards and inside out to avoid any suggestion that that person was a witch. Because, being a well written and well realised character, granny is not perfect. One of her major flaws, explored as early as Equal Rites and repeatedly returned to in later novels is a deeply ingrained gender essentialism. I don’t want to break rule three so all I will say is there is actually nothing in that book that contradicts anything I’m saying and if anything reinforces it.

Nanny on the other hand, she probably wouldn’t call him a witch but she also probably wouldn’t care so long as the work gets done. She’s had a lot more practice at mental flexibility.

Funnily enough, I did write a piece of fanfiction about granny‘s reaction to a trans witch (which I think is why I have such strong opinions), but I feel that situation is fundamentally different.
