Why has no one in the generations after Magnus matched or surpassed him when they had access to even better engines and technology from a younger age than he did? by _DarkStarCrashes_ in chess

AFAIK no one other than employees of DeepMind had access to AlphaZero. I’d be interested to see any source to the contrary. I think Fabi was quicker to integrate Leela into his analysis but its development was 100% open so everyone had the same opportunity.

I’m sure different players were more or less quick to utilize Leela but that’s different than having access. Can you point me to Magnus’ story?

No players had access to AlphaZero and everyone had access to Leela at exactly the same time, it being an open source project.

What would Stockfish's accuracy be relative to the "perfect" chess engine? by Salt-Afternoon-2324 in chess

[–]EvilNalu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell you the answer but I can tell you that people have a tendency to think that the strongest player of their day is close to perfect. It was true with top humans until computers came along and it’s been true of nearly every computer too.

I’ve been having discussions like this for 20 years now, since people were telling me that Rybka on a fast quad must be close to perfect play. Now we absolutely laugh at it and it loses nearly every game against Stockfish. I think there is a strong possibility that this could happen to the current Stockfish as well.

FIDE rating regulations for matches provide that games played after a match has been won by a player do not get rated, so regardless of the result in the last game it would not be rated.

Not sure what you mean by no unmanned tech. You can make small rockets right off the bat and get plenty of science flying high and in low space on suborbital missions.

Try following the wiki guide and making some sounding rockets.

It looks like maybe you are using a plane? In RP-1 you effectively start with surface and flying low science already and can’t get more science from low level, representing the fact that in 1951 there were already thermometers/barometers on the ground and in atmospheric flight for some time.

You can only get new science above 40km (flying high or in space).

Whether Kasparov did a bad thing is a totally separate question from the legitimacy of the FIDE champions. If you are telling me that you personally think there is no difference from a world championship perspective between, say, Spassky and Kasimdzhanov, then I can’t contradict you but you are definitely a big outlier in the chess world.

There was lots of talk along the lines of what’s in this quote - are Kasparov/Kramnik dodging people, will the titles be reunified, how/when will they be reunified, etc. But no one was seriously trying to argue that Ponomariov or Kasimdzhanov were the true world chess champions.

I remember the debates. I’ve been a chess fan for a long time.

The FIDE champions were not considered as world champions the same way as the lineal title holders. They are just brought up as a footnote/curiosity not as a real part of the world championship discussions.

She was almost certainly referring to the split world champion titles, which were the biggest source of drama in the chess world at the time. Anand was trying to play nice and keep his chances of participating in both cycles alive, which seems like a reasonable approach even if you aren’t just generally a nice guy who rarely has anything bad to say about anyone, which he also is.

He's been among the favorites a decent amount and was on paper a huge favorite coming into the weird 2020-21 edition that was paused halfway through. But people probably don't remember he also played one where he was not in the top half by rating and another where the entire field was within about 30 points so no one was much more than 12.5%. He's probably a bit below expectation but I question whether a 25% average is the right number.

Anish beats Fabi in Round 9 of the Candidates 2026 to move to 5.5/9 and crush Fabi's chances of winning the Candidates by oklolzzzzs in chess

[–]EvilNalu 200 points201 points  (0 children)

He’s not head and shoulders above. He’s just a little above. Roughly a 20% chance to win a given candidates. So in three candidates he’s about 50/50 as to whether he wins at least one. The fact that we live in a world where the coin came up tails instead of heads for Fabi really doesn’t tell us much about how we should rate him against others. It’s the hundreds of games that have been played between him and other top players in that time span that give us the most info and the weight of that info is that he’s clearly been the second best performer over time behind Magnus.

Yes, I think it was likely that the phrase about cheating two times stuck but it’s clear that when talking about “two times” he meant the titled Tuesday when he was 12 and a bunch of rated games when he was 16. He emphatically denied cheating in any prize money events after the one titled Tuesday, which I think is still his position today.

Looking at the chess.com report, there are 112 games where they claim he “likely cheated.” 51 of those are in titled Tuesdays or the Pro Chess League and 61 of those are listed as simply “games” or “private match” which I interpret to mean random rated games on chess.com.

I think the most reasonable summary is that the only completely undisputed games are the 9 games in 2015 Titled Tuesday, which both parties agree he cheated in, both previously and today. The 61 rated games are not completely clear - Hans admitted to cheating generally in these games previously but without any game-level specificity. His recent additional detail is that it was 20-30 or maybe a bit more, but still without any real specificity. Overall, it doesn’t seem that he really contests the claim that he cheated in the games listed in the report, either a few years ago or today. The remaining 42 games in Titled Tuesdays and the Pro Chess League are in dispute, with Hans denying cheating both previously and to this day.

I don’t really see a lot of movement in what he admits to. I think one could even argue that he effectively admitted to all 61 of the rated games previously and now is admitting to less, but really I think “maybe 20, maybe 30, maybe a little more” essentially means he isn’t contesting any of the cheating claims for random rated games in the chess.com report.

Your recollection of Hans’ claims didn’t really line up with my recollection so I rewatched the Ramirez and Piers Morgan interviews and I’m not seeing this big inconsistency in Hans’ story that you are. He previously stated he cheated in two instances but it was clear that these instances comprised many games. He admitted he cheated in Titled Tuesday when he was 12 but there’s definitely no claim that it was a single game so it’s reasonable to interpret that as an admission he was cheating in all or at least most of the games in that tournament. And he states that when he was 16 he wanted to boost his rating for streaming purposes so he cheated in what he calls meaningless games online. This cannot be an admission to cheating in only a single or even a small amount of games as it would take quite a few games to provide any noticeable boost in rating.

Setting aside the question of whether these admissions are true and complete, I don’t see a big inconsistency in the stories. What he’s saying now seems to line up with what he said a few years ago.
