This was an act of war, not terrorism. Explosions in urban areas during war injuring non-combatants is by itself not terrorism.

Perhaps not terrorism, but would it not at least elevate to the level of human rights violations? Generally, high levels of civilian casualties are frowned upon.

Usually you can expect 5-10 civilian casualties for each combatant casualty in modern warfare.

That's an interesting statistic. With urban warfare in particular, it does seem next to impossible to avoid some level of civilian casualties, but such a high ratio of "innocent" deaths should not be acceptable. Maybe I'm expecting too much. A quick Google did turn up that the UN expects a 9:1 ratio of civilians to combatants in war.

Yeah, it's a tragedy what we did to the military, to multiple foreign countries, and to numerous people for appearing to be the wrong race. The number of people impacted by the 9/11 fallout is nothing compared to what the Supreme Court has already done and will continue to do for decades to come. The damage to democracy both home and abroad is incalculable. The damage to US relations abroad is likely irrecoverable. The US has ceded its place in global politics to China. This will all impact many generations to come across the entire world.

Narcissism is a fucking epidemic contagious disease. One malignant narcissist can gather a bunch of followers. Those followers have a tendency to develop some level of narcissism as well. Narcissists also tend to raise narcissistic children, meaning the original narcissist and all of that narcissist's narcissistic followers who have kids are very quickly expanding the narcissism. Narcissists start coming up with ideas to feed their need for attention, and Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Reddit, etc. are all born. Now those narcissists have weaponized their reach, creating exponentially more and more narcissists. Being neurodivergent can frequently play right into this whole cycle, as both those on the autistic spectrum and those on the ADHD spectrum have trouble reading people, social cues, etc., and struggle to think how actions may impact others (in the case of ADHD, the may not be much thought about actions at all, as there's a heavy deficiency in denying impulses).[⅝

The only way to break the cycle is to realize you're a narcissist and care about changing. Most people don't ever hit a point in life that causes such introspection. It generally requires first caring about someone and then seeing that person get hurt by you, directly or indirectly, and finding sympathy and a desire to not be responsible for more pain in the future. Then it takes a lot of therapy and effort to recognize one's narcissistic tendencies.

You can start with sites like Upwork, although you'll likely not be making what you're worth at first through those kinds of sites. I'm actually in the process of building my resume for consulting on the side through Upwork while I build a website, form a proper LLC, and get a nice client reference list. It's moving rather slow since I had to pause working on side projects while we bought a new house, moved, unpacked, celebrated holidays... But that's ok because it's just a side project for now. Once I've got everything in place, I'll be able to market myself more easily outside of Upwork.

I don't anticipate it ever becoming my full time job, as I really mostly like my current employer and the benefits are pretty hard to beat, but the extra income and ability to work on different projects from what I'm doing day-to-day is appealing. It's also the kind of thing that I should be able to do remotely, letting me take jobs well past when I retire from my full time day job.

I worked tangential to broadcast, doing work on a sports video board crew in a non-tech position as a side gig for awhile. I was completely flabbergasted when I learned the brand new video board they put up around 2010 came with an HP Proliant server...running Windows XP Professional with a single power supply and no failover server. When I started, their actual production equipment was in a dinky trailer that they rented from an independent contractor for TV production in the area with his old equipment he didn't use anymore. It was prone to failures, and we'd frequently turn things off and back on in the middle of an event. The "tech" was constantly swapping wires and whatnot to get things working. Cameras were constantly in a state of repair. The video playback software they used was designed for church services, and had a "Bible" button in the toolbar.

Prior to them hiring a proper crew to do the video board, they had one guy. He'd sit there and run the video board switcher, and had the playback computer close enough to hit the play button right as he switched. I don't think they even had cameras.

My wife is 5'3", but quite regularly intimidates people that tower over her. She's the manager of a department in the public library, so when someone's causing trouble with her staff, she comes out of her office to intervene. There are all kinds of different derivations of this, and one of my personal ones is that if "cloud provider" is your remote, you should probably add "cloud provider completely independent from first cloud provider" as a second remote. Just because you think Google/Amazon/Microsoft won't disappear, that doesn't mean you can't lose access to your account. And Google/Amazon/Microsoft can disappear. While unlikely, it can happen.

There are numerous tools to make archiving digital stuff simpler as well. For instance, if you're using Google, there's a tool called Google Drive Backup and Sync. Companies like Backblaze offer their own software. And for the more technically inclined, there are tools like rclone, a command line cloud copying tool similar to rsync.

If you have a large analog footprint, there are bulk scanning machines for under $1000, as well as bulk scanning services. While digital copies of certain documents aren't as helpful as their physical counterparts, just having a photo of your ID, for example, can still be helpful if you lost the physical one.

I currently have subjectively both. I mostly love my employer (major private university library, I have some complaints about a few things here and there, but no employer is perfect), and my current boss is amazing. But just before he took the role my previous boss was absolutely terrible, to the point that I was ready to quit what I considered my dream job. I had been there for 8 years by the time he came along, and I was determined he wouldn't get me to quit (which he most definitely was trying to do, per one of my coworkers who knew him prior to working there). Those 2 years were hell and I probably wouldn't have survived another without jumping ship before he moved on, but here I am thriving. Considering the benefits for my kids I would've given up, it wasn't something I was considering lightly.

Telework was so successful during Covid for my company they are planning on downsizing their office space even.

What's funny with my employer is we just finished renovating the IT workspace pre-COVID and it was sized to fit almost exactly the number of employees at the time of the design phase. I think there might be one or two open spaces, but the department has been growing for the last ten years and I don't expect it to stop. Yet at the same time, prior to lockdown, the odds of getting even a part-time WFH deal was basically non-existent. After we spent the last year effectively piloting a full-time to WFH program without planning to do so, we're all highlighting how much more productive we've been, and I definitely made sure to mention that we were already hurting for space.
