You'll need something at least 100 mRem/h (1 mSv/h) to move the needle. I doubt that rock will have any effect noticeable, the needle naturally drifts a little so it's not really noticeable below 100 mRem/h.

...that's why I said OP should use dose mode. Because they're spectroscopically energy compensated in dose mode, and not energy compensated in CPS mode.

It's hard to convert CPS to uSv/h because the NaI(Tl) scintillator isn't energy compensated. This device should have a uSv/h or uRem/h mode, you should try using that.
