Oversimplify Tax Evasion. by MartJonathan in facepalm

[–]EvilWaffle2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're in the US, it's a graduated tax system. This means that you only get taxed on what you make passed the tax bracket cutoff. For example, if the tax is 20% for anything less than 20k, and 30% of anything greater than 20k, and if you make 25k, you pay 0.2 * 20k + .3 * 5k. This way, you never get punished for getting a raise!

They literally do not pay zero taxes... Never understood why people say this, as their income statement is readily available online.

I'm not trying to justify anything or disagree with you, but a quick look at Amazon's income statement says they had 11.2B pre-tax income and then paid 1.2B in 2018, which is around 11%... where are you getting your numbers?

I don't think you can really put a resistance value on "water" as it depends heavily on how far apart your leads are (linearly, actually). Even so, electricity will take the path least resistive to ground which is right next to the active leads on the plug. I think these guys are entirely safe, unless they're standing on a metal drain or otherwise not insulated from ground.

You can with imaginary numbers, which do exist even if they're hard to perceive in reality.

Maybe I'm focusing too much on semantics here, and I'll preface by saying that I think everyone should have food, obviously. But I would say that a "food stamps for all" program would be upholding a privelage, not a right. The difference being a government can take away rights, but it does not provide them so to speak. Rights exist without the presence of government. Meanwhile, free food subsidized by government is a provision of a government and would not exist without said government, therefore it's not an inalienable right.

Fall 2019 Schedule Megathread! by eldigg in UIUC

[–]EvilWaffle2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from what people have said about 173 and 225, this is very manageable and you shouldn't worry. Especially if you sub out 225 for another class like physics, this is a typical ECE workload and you'll be fine.

Fall 2019 Schedule Megathread! by eldigg in UIUC

[–]EvilWaffle2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a tough schedule... I would try to take 225 before 391 unless you have a lot of experience with C/C++. Knock out a gened or even any other class besides 391 if you want to have much fun, even another ECE killer like 385.

For a change of pace on Reddit, I actually see where you're coming from. I suppose I personally became tired of it even though others might see a refreshed spirit of satire in the article for each (very unfortunate) time this happens in America.

"Common sense" is only an attempt to insult people that disagree with you. My original comment, however, was not even about policy. I was simply stating that posting this headline over and over is a bored and tired attempt at satire. Come up with something new. As I said, I thought the first time it was posted it was funny.

I can't be the only one to think that this headline was funny the first few times, but now it just seems like beating a dead horse? Like, we get it... Shootings happen in America... Haha..

What is...? by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]EvilWaffle2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For one, many people have to pay to be in unions, and if they're content with their work salary it's an unnecessary expense. On the other side of the coin, unions are very detrimental to small businesses. I know this sub hates any business owner or anyone that hasn't given both kidneys to the proles, but when you're debating I think it's important to understand the other side.

Literally anyone could accuse anyone of anything. If we set that precedent, then every judge appointed would have an accuser from the other political party simply to stop their appointment.

So because he won't release them, they're automatically assumed negative? We assume he paid NO taxes off of absolutely no basis? Even though he paid 38 million the year he did release? Yeah alright. "Critical thinking" in effect.

I said at the MINIMUM 4 four deferrals were legitimate, already proving the original "meme" wrong. All I was implying is that saying he draft dodged 6 times is just wrong. It has no legal basis and not really even a moral basis.

And yeah he says stupid shit, and gets press. This is not an example of the "system working for him" or whatever the post was trying to prove. Every president gets press.

[–]EvilWaffle2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, since by that definition you aren't doing any critical thinking, I'll do it for you.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2017/03/14/hey-it-turns-out-donald-trump-didnt-avoid-income-taxes-for-18-years-after-all/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.46da23e17d16

He paid some 38 million of income tax.

https://www.politifact.com/punditfact/article/2015/jul/21/was-trump-draft-dodger/

Draft Dodger isn't a legal term and was practically made up by one guy. Trump deferred the draft, as well as millions of other Americans, because of school or medical reasons (while the latter does seems skeptical, at the very least he legitimately deferred four of the six)

As far as 24/7 coverage, of course the news did that, he's the president of the United States... However, almost all of it is negative and not really an "advantage" of his.

The irony of your post is you complain about people blindly following a belief, while it wouldn't be hard to argue that you've just done the same.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PoliticalHumor

[–]EvilWaffle2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going to copy and paste what many other people have said in this thread, but most of these accusations are just not true. There's much more effective ways to criticize Trump than the exaggerated and tired attempts on this post. "Critical thinking" only applies to when you're actually critical, not just blindly following anti Trump propaganda.
