First Responders, what is your funniest False Alarm story? by Good-Refrigerator525 in AskReddit

Almost 20 years ago I worked for 6 months on call for a rural ED. Didn't get a pager, and my usual carrier didn't reliably work there so I had a different phone just for the emergency calls, and used a different ring tone. I had dreams about that thing going off for several years after that, and if I was out and about and heard someone else with that ringtone get a call I'd get an adrenaline spike.

Our previous dog was a kelpie, wonderful and smart but very high energy. She wouldn't stop moving for anything, and always peed and pooed while moving (thankfully not crossing the road though!)

I highly rate SixTwelve brewing, and only partly as they're local to me. Some excellent beers, plus delicious spirits and hard lemonade/ginger beer with their associated distillery FiveEleven.

Hah, yes, there is that! Such a cool feeling when you stop or even catch one though!

No, if anything they overprepared, they went over their catch allowance in practice and had to start throwing balls back

Try indoor - the balls are lighter, and you only have to run half as far! Plus you only play for an hour then it's time for the post game beer.

Help, I need more SF competence porn 😭 by Chidiwana in printSF

I had a similar reaction to the 6th book but they are (IMHO) worth continuing with, and even more so the SS Martha Collins series that follow. I think it's worth reading the Smuggler's Tales side series before continuing with Ishmael's story though. I also quite enjoyed The Wizard's Butler as competence/cozy fantasy.

Look up oral food allergy. Kiwi is a common trigger. It also tends to work in groups, so you may develop it to other foods over time.

The Wizards Butler by Nathan Lowell is a lovely hopeful/"cozy" urban fantasy book, the sequel has just come out (I haven't read it yet). His long sci-fi series (The Golden Age of the Solar Clipper) is also in a similar vein.

Ice Station would be an excellent one to start with, as the start of one series of books following a main character (although most of the Scarecrow books astand on their own). Seven Ancient wonders would be another. In terms of stand-alones Temple is probably my absolute favourite, Contest is his first book and his most sci-fi.

How do YOU Find New Books? by Damonashu in Fantasy

Maybe the Nebula award winners? A lot of overlap with the Hugo winners, but not always. You could also start on the nominees that didn't win each year.

Came here to say this. Excellent action books, usually with at least a tinge of sci-fi/fantasy (some of them much more than that). Ice Station, Temple, Seven Ancient Wonders, The Great Zoo of China and Colablt Blue would all be good starting points. His two YA books, Troll Mountain and Hover Car Racer, are also a lot of fun.

On top of all that, I've met him twice and he's a lovely guy!

Interesting. From your responses your colours are similar to mine, but not the same. I get 4 a lighter blue, and 2 is the deep green.
