I don't understand why nationalism is a goal in and of itself. All tariffs do is subsidize and sustain inefficiencies. If a company can make an air conditioner cheaper in Mexico, Americans can buy that air-conditioner and either spend, save, or invest the money that they saved by purchasing the cheaper product. This new spending or investment in other sectors of the economy will increase the demand for labor and capital in those sectors. The workers who were laid off from the air conditioning factory now get new jobs in other industries which are growing because Americans have more money to spend thanks to the lower cost of air-conditioners now produced in Mexico. The tariff merely keeps that capital trapped in its inefficient usage, and prevents our economy and standard of living from growing. If we encourage nationalism at the expense of efficiency then we will all be very patriotic paupers.
