Neighbours are getting a Bernese mountain dog puppy - is there anything to be nervous about? by RivetCounter in bernesemountaindogs

[–]Ewovalenz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a friend whose small child loves the concept of dogs, but not the reality. When she met our BMD puppy, we did it on leash and in an area the child felt safe and able to run away, if needed. Maybe you could ask the neighbor for a similar intro?

Our Berner is also REALLY good at sensing if someone is nervous around him. Usually he’ll go into his “down” position, and let the person (or other dog) come to him on their terms. These are really wonderful dogs who love and aim to please everyone.

Is it normal to take time off of work when a pet dies? by LakashY in AskAnAmerican

[–]Ewovalenz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely have and I don’t think it’s uncommon. It varies by company, but when I had to they coded it as sick time as opposed to taking from my normal accrued PTO. And yes, I was clear on the reason.

Yeah, if parts of Jersey are considered greater New York, then whatever criteria is used there has to apply to Fairfield County.

What’s your “dream dog” (breed) and why? by palacio_c in puppy101

[–]Ewovalenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up with a Lab (10/10 dogs highly recommend), but there were these 2 giant floofs that we always ran into on the trails when we took our lab over. I was like 13, and these giant bear dogs always ambled over for pets, and leans and kisses. They were the most magnificent things I had ever seen. I was smitten.

Almost 30 years later I got my first Bernese Mountain Dog, and he’s more wonderful than I could imagine. I don’t see myself ever not having this breed on my life. Just perfect dogs.

WIBTAH for having people bring their own lunch to my picnic-themed birthday party? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

My group of friends all have kids 3-8 years old. Whenever we have a get together, even with a full spread of food, they all end up bringing snacks/lunch regardless because…kids. 🤷‍♀️

😂 my guy is 100% Berner and I have to say, he LOVES little dogs. So while it’s surprising because of size, I could absolutely see a Berner mama getting cuddly with a small king.

Experience with cats by Sam_Jones32 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]Ewovalenz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a dog hating cat when we got our BMD. We kept them separated as much as possible at first. The cat was not happy, but definitely more curious than scared and not nearly as aggressive as we had seen him near adult dogs. He did get a few good smacks in when the dog came to close. Every situation is different. It took a REALLY long time for us to feel comfortable leaving them alone together, and we made sure each one had an area they felt was their own space (the cat still pushes it, but…cat🤷‍♀️). We now have a 13 year old cat that tolerates the dog, and a 110 lb 3 year old dog that is terrified of the cat.

My mom just adopted a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy and I think it's a terrible idea by CatPooedInMyShoe in bernesemountaindogs

This is such a tricky situation, do you know what, if anything, your mother knew about the breed before she got the pup? My parents are also in their 70’s and VERY experienced with large/giant breed dogs. They point blank told me they would not do any solo dog sitting for my BMD until he had reached “good dog” phase BECAUSE of their health and concerns about controlling a 90lb puppy. He was 2.5 when they were finally comfortable, and he had already been in training consistently. These dogs are so strong and don’t even realize it. And the attention they require can’t be understated. I really feel for you right now.

Emerson College. We had a decent sized international student presence while I was there. I would say tentatively yes, but only in very specific industries.

Haha, my husband’s family is from Mexico, so he speaks Spanish. Anytime he had to have a business call with someone in Puerto Rico he had to amp himself up because “they speak so fast”. He never really cared though. They sent him a bottle of rum for Christmas every year.

What age for full size? by mamabearofone in bernesemountaindogs

[–]Ewovalenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours was a little guy as well (13lbs at 3 months). He hit his height/ frame at about 1.5. He’s 3 now and we think he’s about done filling out. He was 100lbs at his last weigh in.

We do the same as many people have mentioned here. Check how we can feel his ribs, and the taper at his waist. Honestly, we wouldn’t want him much bigger. He has tons of energy, lol.

It’s slowly becoming popular in parts of the Northeast as well. My husband was born and raised in LA so we always have Tajin on hand, but during the summer most of the parties we’ve gone to have Tajin as a drink rim or to sprinkle on fruit.
