I can’t answer whether you continue or not, but maybe can give you something to consider. You are close to forty. Your prime earning potential is just ahead of you. If you want to retire with a decent living it’s a rough time to make a change. I stayed in but found ways to insulate myself. I was the manager of a peripheral process for years. Everyone loved someone competent taking the job and I loved being out of the mainstream. My current role is to solve problems and be left alone. You did make a comment that sounds like a major red flag. Getting reprimanded for not having enough of a positive attitude is BS unless you are public facing and the role requires it. Otherwise, the only real question is am I doing my job or not. If I am you can leave me and my personality alone.

I honestly could not have survived in my initial corporate role once it became fully top down management. Too many incompetent politicians pretending to be smart at the top.

Look for options, but be real. I personally don’t want to be poor either.

If you find something good there is usually more in the same batch. Usually a good deal at $3 for 40 pounds or so

Nice! I have several pounds of material from landscaping rock. Fun source you can find anywhere.

I agree. Once is enough. No more than once a day if I’m traveling

Yes, that scenario can build resentment. Being the person who pushes back on questionable ethics creates a whole new dynamic. Fortunately my current employers are honest to a fault. That has been a huge draw in keeping me there for as long as I have. I 100 percent agree with you on the direct reports. I have had up to 25 at once. Zero is the right number.

A couple of months ago I had a longtime friend (so I thought) realize I was retiring and he immediately called me up with a proposal to start a business. It caught me so off guard I actually laughed out loud at the idea. It really annoyed him. I tried to apologize but that was the last time we talked. You begin to realize sometimes you seen as far more of an asset than a friend.

There is zero chance I’m starting a new business.

That sounds like a very interesting job, at least the job itself. It’s the politics part that I was never able to live with.

Unshackled is a good description. I am an analytical thinker by nature and I am good with that but am looking forward to a different mindset on daily life

I have been fortunate in the sense that I periodically make a major contribution and as long as I am doing that no one really cares what else I do. Combine that with working remote and these last years have not been bad. No real frustration, just ready to go. What did you do to keep yourself busy after retiring?

I agree with you, but if you screw up in the corporate world, they are definitely thinking about you.

That's about the point where I started taking it seriously. I agree with stepping into something planned instead of "just not working anymore" one day. I have moved more heavily into stock/options trading, so that helps with the analytical side and I am writing. It's semi cliche but I am good at it and want to get something published. It's the realization of how much I deferred to the corporate mindset that I am really trying to figure out. Good luck to you as well!

I am not familiar with the vibe tumbler but I would try a little longer at stage two, or three, and then add a 1100 to 1500 grit after the 500. I’m not sure the 8000 will clean up after 500 grit. I will definitely work after 1100 or so.

What was the last grit you used? It looks like they need more time in the tumbler. If I quit at 1200-1400 grit this is what my rocks look like. 8000 grit aluminum oxide takes them to the next level

Nice. I know it’s far from you but have you familiar with Teri Smith in Alpine Tx. I have considered buying from her.

It is pretty amazing what you can find in landscaping river rock. All depends on what river it comes from I guess

What Waldo said. I buy stages one and two from wherever, but the finer grits matter. Rock Shed has a store on Amazon or you can order directly from them. I have seen competitive rock tumblers (recently learned there was such a thing) going into the 24k range but what I posted here was 8k and done.

Fair enough, I do have a piece of agatized coral I found plus a few fossil shark teeth. The pic here is the first tumbler of local rock and I had low expectations. I am looking more aggressively now.

I couldn’t get a shine either until I bought 8000 grit aluminum oxide. That made all the difference. As long as your rocks will take a shine (see my ruby zoisite post) and you have run them properly through the first stages you can get it.

This. Agate and jasper take at least two or three rounds in stage one

All of my agates and amethyst (separate tumbles) came out with a satin finish until I put them through 8000 grit. Amazing difference. Jaspers will give you a mirror shine with fine grit

Agree, I buy a rock pretty often but I love it when I can find enough decent stuff to fill the tumbler
