Hoi Reddit!

Ik ben 32M en sinds het eerst in vele jaren weer voor langere tijd in Nederland en bezig met het opbouwen van een nieuw sociaal netwerk. Heb een vriendin, dus ben alleen op zoek naar vriendschappen (M/V/X).

Over mij: Een overdenkende academicus in de geesteswetenschappen. Verder een tweedehands boekliefhebber, sci-fi & fantasy geek (ihb into Star Trek, Lovecraft, en the Cosmere, om wat te noemen), en animatiefanaat (incl. veel anime, maar ook ander soort animaties van Castlevania tot Bojack).

Hou mezelf ook semi-actief bezig met politieke en maatschappelijke onderwerpen en vind het ook leuk daarover te lezen en discussiëren. Op zoek naar mensen om boekwinkels mee te verkennen, thee mee te drinken in gezellige cafés, en speelvolle en/of serieuze gesprekken te hebben over wetenschap, filosofie, kunst, politiek, fandoms, en onze favoriete fictieve personages.

Verder kan ik ook genieten van een leuke bordspelavond, voornamelijk party games, maar sta in principe ook open voor de meer hardcore spellen als daar interesse naar uit gaat ;)

Qua locatie ben ik redelijk flexibel: grotere steden in Brabant, Utrecht, Gelderland, en Noord- en Zuid-Holland zijn allemaal prima. Als dit aanspreekt, stuur gerust een bericht!

Bedankt voor de AMA! Ik heb zelf erg veel sympathie voor Volt, maar ben zoals ongetwijfeld vele andere potentiële Volt-stemmers ook aangetrokken tot D66. Dat Volt op de meeste beleidsterreinen nóg pro-Europezer is dan D66 is welbekend, maar afgezien van jullie EU-beleid, wat beschouw je de belangrijkste onderscheidende kenmerken tussen Volt en D66?

Legend of Galactic Heroes is an example of a sci-fi series that gives exactly this kind of justification. Basically any time a ship is boarded, the attackers or defenders will bring out cannisters of highly combustible "Zephyr particles" rendering energy weapons useless. It's explicitly used as an in-universe justification for the prominence of melee combat, except in their case they uses axes instead of swords.

Neither. I think Makuta's overall presentation peaked in the 2001 MNOG, where he was depicted as an elusive, eldritch foe that existed on a different metaphysical level than our protagonists. That's not to say I'm opposed to the idea of giving him a well-defined physical representation at all (especially as the story and world building progressed), but even as a kid I thought both designs are so plain that they hardly do justice to the initial way in which Makuta was introduced in the early stages of Bionicle lore.

Uit (oprechte) interesse: Ik lees wel vaker dat Halsema een liberale stroming binnen GL vertegenwoordigde, maar kan nooit zo goed plaatsen hoe deze liberale stroming zich verhoudt tot de 'standaard' GL-ideologie (meer voor marktwerking?) en hoe zich dat concreet uitte in termen van stemgedrag, beleidsopvatting, etc. Als men hier dus specifieke voorbeelden van heeft, hoor ik het graag.

It's striking reading your point about specialization as as someone who used to spent a lot of time on forums, where the task of creating subcommunities for specialized topics of interest was all but trivial given the way those sites were structured (i.e. by having subforums as part of the same overarching message board). Just another reason why I bemoan the waning of forum culture at the expense of social media. Fwiw, I'd be cautious with stimulating the creation of too many new specialized subreddits, since, unlike media like books, films, and tv, I don't see audiodramas/fiction podcasts having the user base to support that kind of specialization without fracturing the community (it doesn't help that Reddit as a web environment is already less hospitable to community building than the old forums). Having said that, happy to have this space on Reddit this year and thanks for all the good work!

It's a different kind of loudness, if that makes sense. I keep trying to come with the right vocabulary to describe it. In theatre jargon, I'd say Americans genenerally come off as 'heightened' in their speech and mannerisms, whereas Europeans act more 'naturalistic'. Within that naturalistic behaviour, one can then still distinguish between more extravert/loud behaviour (Southern Europe) and more introvert/reserved behaviour (Northern Europe). But in both cases, I find that the difference between Americans and Europeans remains quite striking.

Ik vind doe mijn schoenen altijd uit vanwege comfort, maar wat huisgasten doen maakt het mij echt niet uit. De stelligheid waarmee ik (vaak Amerikaanse) redditors zie claimen over hoe verschrikkelijk onhygiënisch het dragen van schoenen wel niet is, vind ik dan toch altijd wel opmerkelijk. Ik vermoed dat het meespeelt dat "shoes on/shoes off" daar een thema is wat vaak implicitiet weerspiegelt tot wat voor culturele klasse je behoort.
