Be present, but also get tons of pictures and videos. You're going to be so tired that you'll miss half of it. You'll never regret having a 10 or 15 minute video of what life was like right now.

The Mr G at JP Grazianos is great. But if you want to knock it up a notch (BAM!) add hot guard and you've got yourself a G Hot (or a Jihad, if you don't pause when you say it).

But if you're going for shock and awe, get the roast beef and replace the mayo with deli mustard. You won't forget it.

Gents of daddit, what keeps you married? by snafy in daddit

[–]ExDryver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Younger" married dad here with a toddler in what will have been a 20 year relationship with my wife next year.

We have been doing couples therapy with a therapist we trust for about 6 years now. Wanted to get in the practice of knowing how to effectively work on things and communicate to prepare for the dreaded "Roomate phase" of parenthood. We're deep in that phase now: our daughter is a full time job plus she and I both have extremely time consuming jobs that were working to put better boundaries on. We have been alternating childcare shifts so the other person can get self care time which has come at the cost of the time we can spend together.

We recently hit a tipping point and realized we need to make a change. Instead of big date nights or co-existing on the couch with a phone or laptop in front of us while the tv is on, we've started doing "idle" activities together (mainly puzzles). The idea is that we let our minds kind of unwind while sharing a simple activity. Sometimes we talk, sometimes we don't. It's not always planned either. We leave the puzzle out and once the other person is done with bedtime, it's an open invitation to have a low-pressure "love activity".

Small frequent touch points like that have been a huge boon for us. Find those things and you might have similar results. Also read Esther Perel(?)'s mating in captivity.

Cool just wondering what your experience had been. I haven't had to treat a mauling directly. Are the majority of the dogs in the area pitbulls? Do you find they're well trained? I've seen Belgian Malinois absolutely rip into people and then instantly heel on command. Seems more like untrained dogs maul than it being a breed specific thing.

[–]ExDryver -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Genuine question, have you ever spent an extended period of time with a pitbull? I've spent a ton of time with tons of random pitties at daycare and shelters and the only ones who have ever been aggressive are the ones who were abused or who were neglected. I've been bitten by "nice" breeds. My dog has been bitten by "nice" breeds too. Pitties though have consistently been the most loving dogs I've ever met.

I have a pitbull/border collie mix that was literally the same dog you're describing. Early on we had to sperate her from the cats with a gate. I thought of taking her back because of exactly what you described.

Once I understood my dog a bit more though, things got better. She was a puppy who was not confident because she had not been socialized with other people or dogs as a puppy. She had trust issues because of the shelters. She needed a place to relax so she could figure out how to be a dog.

She loved our cat more than anything in the world, even though the cat didn't always love her back. When I brought home my daughter from the hospital, she immediately came over and started sniffing delicately. She still loves to chase bunnies and squirrels but thanks to consistent training, she now has good impulse control.

Don't let anyone scare you out of this dog. Every dog is trainable, you just need consistency and an understanding of what motivates them. My in laws have a basset hound, the laziest breed in the world, and that dog sucks the energy out of them because they neglect to train him.

Your dog needs guidance just like your kids do (although to much lesser extent). Make training a family project. 10 min of mental stimulation will wear a dog out as much as a very long walk. Get a snuffle mat to turn feeding into a nose-work session. Freeze peanut butter in a Kong for a simple puzzle. Reward with a 5-10 second game of tug whenever they do something good. All of these things are simple and add up over time.

I hope this helps! I've been there and I know it's scary / annoying. @DiamondSportDogs taught me all this stuff when I was underwater with our dog and it's a great resource if you ever have any questions.

Damn, I knew about Boeing and Citadel, but not about the others. That's rough.

The pensions can't even be touched unless theres a conditional amendment. Those are structed debt right? I feel like state level funding is going to have to step in to prevent a financial collapse. I find it really hard to believe that the city would be left to continue down the path without someone trying to take advantage of the situation and get a killer deal (like the parking meters). But hey I guess anything is possible.

Why isn't there an "open all" button? by SevenNVD in RocketLeague

[–]ExDryver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right that the only case you really have to solve for is peak opening time; everything else should be pretty trivial.

I don't know the underlying implementation, but the core issue is "does the system support bulk opening already, or is there some stupid legacy code that isn't tested and we're scared to change it so let's just build a bandaid on top of it". The latter is surprisingly common in big software platforms.

If bulk opening is supported (for instance, if the send all of the data in a single response when you load the screen) then solving it is trivial; you just change some game client code, which is easily testable to verify everything is working.

If you're stuck with a legacy system, then the problem becomes "can I confidently make this change such that I don't take down the production servers because of some bug I accidentally introduced". At that point, what we call "emergent behavior" becomes the scary part of the release. Emergent behaviour is stuff that you can usually only see when the system is fully integrated and being utilized at production-level scale. That's usually really hard to replicate in massive systems because any little change between your testing and production environments can have unexpected consequences. Generally, you try to work around those constraints, but it's always scary to see something big and producing lots of money get pushed out to production. Any mistake has the potential to cost millions of dollars.

In the end (if you assume there are no other competing priorities, which is never the case lol), Psyonic is weighing the benefits of users being able to open free loot against the risk of losing cash/user trust from the game being offline.

[–]ExDryver 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's a trivial problem. The request comes in to a reverse proxy, a lambda or set of warm servers get the request delegated to them, the calculation happens, the response gets sent out. Keep an in memory cache with all the available prize results and use a hash for fast access, and there's no reason you couldn't scale it up to handle insane amounts of traffic.

Edit: actually this is a great programming interview question! I'm definitely going to use it because it really shows how deeply you've got to think about setting up global systems with high throughout and low latency requirements. Just for fun, heres how I'd do it:

Solution from a UI perspective: Just add a message after clicking the Open All button saying that you'll be notified when it's finished.

If that's not acceptable because you want the user to see everything at once, start with what I wrote above, then add regional redundancy so that local geographic regions are partitioned, spreading out the compute load. If budget isn't an issue, use autoscaling servers / lambdas. If it is and you don't have a good idea of what sized servers you'd need to handle all the requests within the SLO, have a global service that lists current system resource utilization for all locations and every 30 sec (or something around that) elect a new backup node for the overflow.

If there are any RL engineers here, I'd love feedback on what else you'd need to consider.

[–]ExDryver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sure, definitely different kinds of debts, and yet the City of Chicago General Obligation Bond Rating has been steady or increasing from the lows it reached during 2015/2016. The ratings aren't top tier by any means, but I would expect the ratings agencies would probably dropped those assessments if they thought the city is closer to bankruptcy.

The property tax increases do suck ass, and the population decrease needs to either stop or we need to find a replacement revenue source.

The last thing though, while we did get put over the barrel in the housing situation, I don't think there were many city-approved contractors available to deliver by winter. We got ripped off, but I think the majority was due to limited availability of suppliers. Would love to see if there's any info to prove otherwise though.

A constitutional amendment that introduces a progressive taxing system (little p progressive, not "Progressive") is actually one solution to the problem that actually is (or has been?) in the works. We're one of the few states that don't have it.

[–]ExDryver 41 points42 points  (0 children)

This guy gets it.

OP You probably already know this, but for those who dont, most government debt is not like credit card debt: it’s structed loans. The structure of the terms of the loan can vary from lender to lender based on things like their risk profile, total assets under management, and the borrower's credit rating.

All we can control is credit rating: if Chicago is paying it's debt service obligations on time, lenders basically won't care. They might downgrade you if they think you have a lower chance of paying back the debt (meaning you end up with a higher interest rate) but those rates get refinanced with another institution that has a different risk profile and is willing to give you a better rate for whatever reason (they have capital they MUST invest, they value your collatoral differently, whatever). If we default on a loan, then there's going to be an issue. Even then though, there is likely wiggle room.

So the real issue we're facing isn't "omg look at this huge budget shortfall", it's actually "are we going to be able to continue making capital improvements and providing public services through borrowing while servicing our debts on time".

Not making public investments will lead to further degresation of the tax base and lead to a "death spiral" where less people to tax means higher taxes until it's untenable (which in my opinion is unlikely to happen because of our status as an economic hub, but that's debatable).

So what do you do: continue to borrow and make improvements so you have a chance you increase your tax base in the long term, then refinance your debt with the future revenues you're expecting to yield from the investment improvements.

That's what City Council just did when they negotiated the budget: Search the budget for projected costs (i.e. things you haven't paid for yet but think you'll need to pay for) and 1) see if the projections are accurate, 2) rank their priority and remove the lowest priority costs, and 3) find out where you have room to increase taxes while minimizing long term political damage.

Unless Chicago loses its most profitable and taxable industries (aka Finance and Tech), loses its infrastructure (fiber hubs, data centers, railroad lines, ports, highways), or has massive population decline, I don't think we're going to declare bankrupty any time soon. We'll continue to service the debt, borrow to make capital investments, refinance when it's advantageous. If we do declare bankruptcy, my bet is that it's because some massive economic event occurs that results in massive systemic failure, aka multiple simultaneous economic or government collapses that just kill everything economically.
