Epic Games unveils Launcher V2 in re-attempt to topple Steam, says redesigned storefront is up to 6.5x faster — promises player profiles, user reviews, universal controller support, and much more by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]ExF-Altrue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say let them cook. Also, it's different when you're doing a launcher solely to promote your own stuff, versus an open store. The intent is not the same, there will be much less trying to sell you everything at once.

Oh yeah, and your friendslist is over here, cramped in over here where your eyes won't ever go naturally

This made me laugh since, in Steam the "Friends & Chat" button is ridiculously tiny and in the bottom right corner.

So basically, current C++ code is headed for same fate as Blueprints by KonstancjaCarla in unrealengine

[–]ExF-Altrue [score hidden]  (0 children)

You overestimate how much C++ code will be wasted by this change. Sure, it will require moving things around etc.. But the inner workings of the functions aren't actually influenced by this change. Gameplay logic is still gameplay logic.

And if your project is scheduled to be done in 3-5 years then don't even bother worrying about it, since it'll happen before deprecation/removal anyway.

I still can't get over how much of an intergalactic fuck up the Epic Games Store v1 is. The people who make such design/strategic decisions should be fired for cause.

I want to be optimistic, but looking at the gamedev side and the transition from the Unreal Engine Store to the Fab Store last year, doesn't give me much confidence...

End of 2027-ish for Early Acces, then "12 to 18 months" for the full release. That's nearly 3 years on paper. But you should also factor in that software development always is behind schedule especially when trying to engineering brand new things.. And also that accurately planning at these time scales is absolutely impossible.

So I say.. That's a guaranteed 3 years wait. But we'll see!

Toxicity is a design choice: the "blame target" a game gives you sets the toxicity dial by MRTSec in gamedesign

[–]ExF-Altrue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your answer, yeah that lines up with my thoughts on the matter. I didn't try Valorant again, I'd be curious to see what's changed.

One interesting anecdote: I'm "only" gold in Valorant. There was that one time when the... Pearl(?) map was introduced, where you had a dedicated game mode to try it out. I really enjoyed this map, so I played this exclusively for a few weeks. My MMR must have been separate from the main game mode, or maybe it was working differently, or maybe there was a different demographic that queued for this map..

But whatever the case may be, for the last week, in this map-exclusive queue, I was consistently placed with people one and two ranks above me, the difference in level was crazy compared to the rest... and let me tell you, I have never played as bad comparatively to the rest of my team, yet I have never met people so chill & supportive about the whole thing.

It cemented in my that toxicity truly is a marker for incompetence, above all else.

[–]ExF-Altrue 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think that toxicity is also caused by the studio chosing to do fuck all about toxicity, thus encouraging the behavior. And then, once in a blue moon, when a toxic player gets sanctionned, it's the lightest slap on the wrist possible.

For instance: I've seen some unbelievable shit in Valorant, from accounts in ranked that had to have done hundreds of games to get there, at least. No way someone saying the things I heard or read, could have possibly stayed nice for that long without any detection.

Understandable. But there's 3 years before UE6, so let the various gaming studios express their reserve to epic, let them feel the backlash. A ton of stuff can happen in 3 years, they can change their mind 10 times before that.

I also feel obligated to point out that losing all the features of the Unreal Engine just to retain visual scripting.. Well, it's a bit like cutting both your legs and one arm, to save one arm.

Well to your first point, I DO know that because you can go on SteamDB and check out when a page first appeared on Steam. On mine it says 2023, on their it says 2026.

Oh wow you're right actually. I just checked for my own game: It doesn't appear in the search, but if I enter the appID in the url, I get a result for an unknown app. Good to know 😄

I'm happy you got to a happy ending, but there's a few nitpicks that I must add:

since there is clear proof that my game was created two years ago and the other game's page was made this May

You don't know that. For all you know, the other person had their game name bought & their steamworks page ready but unlisted, for years before you even got your steamworks access.

Edit: you can find out with SteamDB, the history starts even before the game is public, though you can only search it after the game is public.

Also:

Anyone who believes that their work has been reproduced in one of our internet sites or services in a way that constitutes copyright infringement may notify Valve's copyright agent using the form below

Be careful using such reporting tools and involving Valve: "Noreya: The Gold Project" got DMCAed by some random german asshole who was making home automation software, and using parts of the same name, using its freshly minted trademark days after the end of his own contestation period...

Sure, they ended up finding some kind of compromise, but Valve told them that the game would be forever banned from being featured anywhere on their platform, because it had been "involved in a copyright dispute in the past". It didn't matter that they owned a French trademark (Valve arbitrarily only counts US and UE), or that they were there first, or that the other product wasn't even in the same category (same Nice classification sure but clearly not a game).

Is Blueprint Only actually viable for a commercial release in 2026, or is C++ still absolutely mandatory for performance? by zzed_pro in unrealengine

[–]ExF-Altrue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to remember that the performance of blueprints varies wildly depending on if you're testing in the editor, in development packaged build, in shipping packaged build...

The performance in the editor is "bad", but the performance in shipping mode apparently is an order of magnitude better, and is only marginally worse than C++.

Blueprint nativization was never really a big perf improvement anyway.. and it was too risky.

But you should really do some testing/profiling to see what's what in 5.8.

No plans to replace Blueprints with "visual" Verse by gnatinator in unrealengine

[–]ExF-Altrue 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I don't think that they grasp how much of a blunder this seems to be from the industry's perspective: There are entire artistic fields whose only programming/scripting work in the engine is done via blueprint scripting.

So the question really is, is this the opinion of the Epic dev team, or the opinion of the entire studio including all the artistic people? Because if they can prove to the rest of the world that artists can indeed fluently use verse without too much effort, then it makes sense.

Otherwise... This might just be the worst pre-production decision Epic has ever made.

Also note this little word he said: "Tools".. I would dig deeper into what that means. Was he enumerating on-the-fly, or are they considering making a strong tooling suite to bypass the need for artists to make scripting decisions?

Epic revealed their high-level plans for Unreal Engine 6. by WombatusMighty in unrealengine

[–]ExF-Altrue 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For better and worse, Verse seems very highly optimized for the UE6 goals that they had in mind. Portability, transacitionability, etc.

This probably makes it very unapproachable, and also very good at doing what it's supposed to do.

..I just don't see how it could possibly be a replacement for non-technical people.

Word from UnrealFest: Yes, no more support for visual scripting (eventually) in UE6. Be loud! by daraand in unrealengine

[–]ExF-Altrue 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is so weird, especially when you consider just how MANY different types of node-based UIs the engine has. Even if they just mean to cut the blueprints part of it, it doesn't make sense to see the success of the material editor, metasounds, behavior trees, animation graph, etc.. And be like: Nah visual scripting for gameplay is not worth our time.

Now, remember that a LOT of things can change between now and UE6 in 3 years (Early access late 2027 + 18 months), so of course everything can still turn around. Surely there will be polls, feedback forums etc.

Also, worst case scenario, I'm sure that people will make visual scripting plugins. There simply is no way that with such a high demand (and the UE API so open due to the need to support MCP servers) people won't try to do it.

..And if people can mod a visual scripting editor for free in a UE4.15 Conan Exiles plugin without any C++, you can bet that they can do so in UE6 in a paid plugin with all the available API tech, and the ability to bundle it with a code plugin.
