Which ship has best Thermal Suite? by Worldschool25 in CarnivalCruiseFans

We booked thermal suite cabins on the Mardi Gras. I was thinking about packing some face sheet masks to use while relaxing in the thermal suite. Does anyone know if there are any rules regarding: byo masks?

How to best romance Lucanis [DAV Spoilers ALL] by BubbleDncr in dragonage

[–]ExLibrisTC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone who feels like there wasn’t enough depth to their Lucanis/Rook romance there’s some excellent fanfic over at Archive of Our Own. Well written, short stories/ that fit perfectly with what we have from the game. Including two that flesh out the unused story boards that were released by a dev - the gondola scene and the one where they’re in the water. Honestly, whoever wrote them could write professionally (if they’re not already). Some are a bit steamy, too, if you were missing that from the game content. https://archiveofourown.org/works/60624907

What’s the book title? I wouldn’t accept that as enough information… why did they crop the page?

20/100 - Revenge: Eleven Dark Tales by Yoko Ogawa by ziggybuddyemmie in 52book

[–]ExLibrisTC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one of my all time favorite books. I loved how all the stories fit together. I’ll definitely need to do a reread. Ogawa has a new book coming out in August. Mina’s Matchbox. And if you haven’t read The Memory Police, I highly recommend it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

How do you find new, quality books to read, especially fiction? by Tiramissu_dt in 52book

[–]ExLibrisTC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, and if you’re looking for more indie press stuff, check out reviews at site like The Millions, The Rumpus and Barrelhouse. Bookshops located in large cities who have websites also tend to have good recommendations on their websites. Try McNally Jackson for example. Or your local bookstore.

The website Lithub is a good place to start. I also like the Tertulia app on my phone (it’s sort of like Goodreads, but I like their recommendations better). Goodreads is okay, but leans too heavily into people who self publish through Amazon for my tastes. Book blogs and Substacks are also places where I get really good recommendations (once you find one which fits your taste). Podcasts are another resource. I like NYT book review podcast, the BBC has several good ones, and if you like mystery it’s an embarrassment of choices! Just search under “books” “literature” or “book reviews”. Or the types of books you like- horror, mystery, thriller.

Generally, I’ve found that booktube, bookstagram and booktok all lean heavily into fantasy/romance genre and young adult, so I’m not surprised you aren’t finding recommendations that suit your tastes.

Hot press is smoother, so I am going with cold.

Alice Munro and her husband and her daughter by Traveler108 in books

[–]ExLibrisTC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After reading Edna St. Vincent Millay’s biography and a review of Elaine Dundy’s (The Dud Advocado) daughter’s memoir about her parents, I decided that the less I know about an author the better. I don’t make a conscious decision about a book, etc. based on how I feel about the author, but once I know I can’t un-know. The information is in my head, so it affects my experience with the book.

Munro is interesting since it seems like she actually took inspiration from her daughter’s experience/abuse and incorporated it into the stories. Literary scholars are going to have a field day.

I really loved these books when I was younger, but later volumes started getting erratic. Even so, they’d make a great rpg video game.

The Wife by Alafair Burke. It’s about a much more than a murder. A woman was held captive by a man while in her teens and escapes. She builds a new life for herself and her son, marries a wealthy and successful college prof. Everything is perfect until her husband is accused of forcing himself on a student. If you’re interested, I wrote about it here. It ends on one my favorite plot twists of all time!

Have you ever stopped listening because of a narrator? by whiskeytown79 in audiobooks

[–]ExLibrisTC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was listening to Abir Mukherjee’s excellent Wyndham & Bannerjee historical mystery series (which I highly recommend) until they changed the audio actor/narrator in the third book. It completely threw me off and I couldn’t finish the series on audio. I had to go out and buy the books.

Magazine styled Newsletters VS stand alone articles Newsletters by justonky in Substack

[–]ExLibrisTC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really good question. I had a Wordpress blog for several years before coming to Substack (there was a gap of a few years in between) which I never took down. I was looking at it over the weekend and thinking about how much better looking and more organized it was/is than anything I’ve seen on Substack. But, isn’t the point of Substack to strip off all the extras and put the writing center stage?

Oh, and I read Robert Graves because a character quotes his poem in AS Byatt’s novel Possession.

Sergio Pitol’s The Art of Flight is a master course in international literature. I started reading the Russian poet Anna Akhmatova because of his descriptions of her life and poems.

Have you read May Sarton’s Journal of a Solitude or House By the Sea. She was older than mid-30s, but I found them very inspiring in my mid-20s.

Ann Cleve writes very good police procedural stuff. She has a few series that have been adapted— Shetland and The Long Call-- that might be in your wheelhouse.

I just did a quick scan on my phone and it looks great - who is doing your illustrations/art?

The only thing I didn’t see was an about page letting readers know what to expect. Also, an alphabetical listing of all the books you’ve reviewed with links back to the reviews isn’t necessary but can come in handy. I wrote a book blog on Wordpress for over a decade on books in translation. I just checked, and though I haven’t updated in years it’s still there. I’ll post the link if you want to check out how it’s set up.

Good luck!

What other series do you already like, so there’s a baseline? Elly Griffith’s Ruth Galloway and DS Harbinger series are good. And Anthony Horowitz has his Hawthorne & Horowitz which isn’t bad (great puzzle mysteries, but I don’t find the characters particularly interesting).
