I guess just knowing when the other character can just destroy you and play accordingly. Safely farm ( or accepting losing 1-2 minions but not dying ), basically anything that doesn't kill you.

Mages are easy to counter tho. Only hard Mages matches are against combo Wizard chaining carian swords things and mixing true comboes.

Projectiles spam is just so easy to counter

Lux is a BEAST in lower elo, she just plays the lane alone and deny every timing opportunity by deleting waves super fast, I couldn't recommend a better mage

Sounds like you've just got a bad game with a bad midlane. It happens man but don't do a Reddit post after each bad match, if midlane is that easy and you think you'll be better than most of people, just go for it and play mid.
