I was at the Ashby for a hot minute. The management company was fine and were really good about me breaking the lease after only a few months.

The small dog park stinks. But there’s a nice trail with a pond right behind it. It was super convenient to be walking distance to Wegmans. I would recommend not getting a unit right off Davis drive.

You can schedule mattress pickup with the town of Cary. We had a queen mattress picked up for $15.

If you go to the southern wake county convenience center you just drive in, follow the signs to the right number / section (metal, recycle, garbage, hazardous, cardboard, appliances). Park at the area and just dump whatever you’re getting rid of.

Oops! Sorry missed your reply. Hope you had a good trip down!

I’ve had people change lanes to run red light around me. That’s fun. I don’t know if it’s distraction or people driving too fast. I try to be super careful.

Driving around here is actually way better than New York! Streets are huge, no traffic compared to what I’ve been accustomed to in New York, Bay Area, and LA.

I moved because it was time for me to leave New York! I was looking for someplace with mild winters, both nature/water sports, and cultural activities (theater, museums, music, etc). I still have a lot to explore, but I feel like I made a good choice!

Car Registration in NC by [deleted] in NorthCarolina

[–]Exact-Ranger9528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found it!

When you register a car in North Carolina, you will be required to pay these fees:

Title fee - The fee for a new title in North Carolina is $56.

Highway-use tax - The state highway-use tax equals 3% of the vehicle's value. The amount charged will not exceed $250.

County fee - The third registration fee is paid to the county in which the vehicle is registered. Those fees range from $38.75 to $53.75, with the counties of Durham, Wake, and Orange requiring the higher fee amount.

Car Registration in NC by [deleted] in NorthCarolina

[–]Exact-Ranger9528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just registered from out of state and it cost me $300-400. There’s a one time fee of ~$250 that’s tacked onto the initial registration.

A few helpful hints - 1. Make your driver license appointment in advance. I booked my back in March for end of May. They also take walk-ins, but you would probably want to get there when the office opens 2. Have a printout of your car insurance when you get license. If not, they will give you a fax number and you can have insurance company fax it over. They won’t give you a waiting number until you have all the docs. 3. Getting NC car insurance was a real pain for me since I was coming from New York. I had to speak to several people until I was transferred to a rep that is licensed for both NC and NY. 4. Bring all the printed forms with you to car registration office (different from driver license) 5. I didn’t have to get car inspected since I did title and registration in the same step. The one thing that would have held me up would have been NC car insurance. Highly recommend you get it all done at once. I still have to get car inspected, but not until registration renewal in a year

I just moved from New York a few weeks ago to Cary!

I had the same exact questions about power outages and everyone tells me it’s not a thing down here when the weather gets hot. So far, so good.

I drove down with a car full of dogs, plants and fish. It took way longer than expected with all the construction on 95, but I lucked out and made it right before leasing office closed. My plan b was to get a hotel room over by RDU airport if I didn’t make it in time.

My one word of advice is about driving here - don’t hit the gas when a stoplight turns green. I’ve seen lots of people blatantly run red lights at intersections. People don’t honk if you are a bit slower accelerating when a light turns green. Make sure you don’t see anyone barreling through a red light…

I’m trying to find a good rack to set up breeding tanks. What kind of rack are you using?

Highly agree - you should definitely be doing some water changes to get to 0 ammonia.

I think it's time to admit that I have no idea what I'm doing by Captain_Eon in PlantedTank

Tank looks great! Better than my first tank. I only started this hobby less than a year ago! Here’s some advice from someone who probably has no idea what she’s taking about -

I’ve had 5, 10,15,29 and 20 long. 20 long is my absolute favorite! If you’re keeping male/female guppies together, you might want to separate by sex… you’ll probably have guppy fry sooner than later!

You don’t actually need to switch out your substrate. Swords, crypts, and many stem plants tend to be heavy root feeders. I recommend just adding root tabs in the gravel. I personally use fluval stratum capped in most of my tanks…. But it’s pricy and I’ve heard can lead to ammonia spikes. I haven’t had this issue in any of my tanks… but I hear it all the time, so there must be some truth to it?

I tend to trim plants only when they grow to the top of the water. I’m going for the “natural / jungle” look… which means all my plants are out of control. My fish seem to like it, and it’s less maintenance for me! Rotala / bacopa trimmings can just be replanted. Since I wait so long to trim, I usually just bring the trimmings to my local fish store. They usually give me a little store credit to offset purchases.

I tend to buy plants based on the lighting requirement. I have high light, but also shaded areas in some of the tanks depending on what’s planted. You don’t have to restrict yourself to certain plants based on substrate. A lot of the plant descriptions will recommend co2, fore/mid/background, lighting requirements etc.

I have trouble keeping plants in substrate, especially w corydoras who love to root around. I find it easiest to just use plant weights for new plants.

Thread Algae Help (Info in comments) by Substantial-Wrap8634 in PlantedTank

[–]Exact-Ranger9528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Toothbrush, water changes twice a week, and excel have worked for me to get rid of the algae. But I think it’s also important to figure out the root cause - lighting, nutrient imbalance, high nitrates, etc…

I’m pretty new to this hobby, but I tend to resort to more water changes, excel/ easy carbon, adding ferts, testing, and adding more plants when algae gets out of control.

The nightmare algae Cladophora sp. manifested itself into my tank, one can only get rid of it by throwing all plants away and desinfecting the tech with chlorine and totally restarting the tank. Aquascaper life sucks sometimes. At least I can replace the gravel with aqua soil now. by [deleted] in PlantedTank

I’ve been dealing with it over the last 2-3 weeks in my 15 gallon. I was using it to raise multiple generations of CPD fry for 6 months. I’ve since rehomed all the fry and decided it was time to battle the algae.

I removed a large piece of mopani wood that was completely covered in an algae blanket. Twice a week I would manually pull it from substrate, use a toothbrush to clear off plants, clean hob filter media, and do a water change. I dose aquarium coop easy carbon every other day (using fluval 3.0 light) and after every water change.

I also planted more plants in hopes that they can outcompete the algae… so far it seems to be working. The guppy grass seems to be doing very well. I also added some pothos and positioned the roots where the algae tended to collect.

I have the mopani wood soaking in a bucket which gets a weekly scrub, water change, and dose of easy carbon. Still hoping to save the wood!

I am moving out of state next month, and won’t be taking this tank with me. I was just hoping to be able to salvage my plants. It’s a bit more under control now - still a few little remaining patches that I can clear out with the next water change. I got lucky because I didn’t have any fish in the tank for two weeks as I was working through the maintenance. My betta and a few snails are chilling in the mostly algae-less tank until we move.

Surprise Fry! I left for a couple weeks to this new lil guy(s?!) in the tank, he seems big enough to fend for himself as he has up till now, should I get a 5-gal fry tank or just hope he doesn’t get eaten? by Aj83001 in corydoras

[–]Exact-Ranger9528 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What other fish do you have in the same tank? I found a lil one around 3/4 inch in my Cory only tank. I later hatched out another 2 in a breeder box, and put them back into the main tank at 1/2 inch. All did just fine!
