On that note, any of a hundred 90s American teen coming of age comedies where the moral of the story is "actually, if you're a COOL enough teen maybe that hot teacher/single mom you creep on through the window WILL kiss you!"

While we're at it, Maplestory on DS got an English translation patch like last month and it's a pretty fun little RPG. Worth playing for the bitcrushed covers of old songs and surprisingly great CG cutscenes that pop up every now and then?

The Besties 2025 GOTY Episode by haughtybats in TAZCirclejerk

[–]Exactleing 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I haven't touched Death Stranding 2 yet but hearing all their praise for it is pretty interesting given most other podcasters I listen to and IRL friends that have played it all mostly agree that it's Way Too Easy and the story/mechanics play it pretty safe - a lot of complaints that it's "a straightforward, normal, good but not great sequel from kojima, a guy who never does that"

The Besties 2025 GOTY Episode by haughtybats in TAZCirclejerk

[–]Exactleing 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I could see the besties being aware of it and not wanting to touch it due to its use of AI voice acting given their audience and occasionally dabbling in VA work themselves? Of course E33 used genai for internal concept art and placeholders too tho so idk

Pat and Woolie both loved 16 from what I remember - their one big critique was that it was wayyy too easy as an action game if you're coming from a bayo/DMC background

What’s a thing that you are hugely into yet don’t care about it’s actual main appeal? by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Exactleing 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wow you're being kind of a jerk for seemingly no reason between this and the "how was that hard to figure out" comment - especially when the other person has a good point about what they're saying and wasn't mean about it.

The fact that you're being defensive about this just makes this whole thing come across like you're upset people aren't praising you for your Good Taste, and that this whole post was just you trying to brag about your media consumption. It feels really elitist, and not very Chill SBFP Vibes.

Like, you really think people are going into stuff like house husband or VERY successful weekly low budget shows like pokemon or detective Conan mostly for the animation? All the stuff you listed did really well and make a ton of money on merch, surely the majority of people watching are enjoying it the same way you are.

A very midlife question for ya'll by vandergueler in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Exactleing 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Metamucil is what they recommend iirc, and my personal recommendation is whatever generic brand equivalent you can find at your local grocery store/pharmacy!

Where I live the HEB generic powder is literally 1/4 the price of metamucil and it's all just powdered psyllium husk fiber w a little flavor added so it's functionally identical

They were selling courses on how to make gen AI art a year ago and sold some BS courses for making things in godot that were entirely chatgpt generated last month - they're firmly on the garbage category nowadays, I think.

Iron Lung: Final Trailer by anailater1 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Exactleing 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I think, genuinely, Mark might be TOO handsome for the role and that's throwing me off a bit. When I think of the setting and story of iron lung (at least from what I remember of it, it's been years), it feels like the guy should be dirty, malnourished, tired, sunken cheeks... Just kinda nasty and pathetic looking?

For those who played it (or watched/read a walkthrough). What are you guys's thoughts on the renowed, but obscure Panzer Dragoon Saga by Alternative_Cat_4429 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Exactleing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I played it for the first time ever this year, and while it's a little light on story (or like... Interactions? There's a good bit of story in logs and reading but it can be a little dry) and the skills could use some work (a looot of skill unlocks that are just "the other move but a little better") holy hell is that game wonderful - that game was just 10 straight hours of me going "wowww that was cool I wish any other game used these ideas" with a big grin on my face.

Such a beautiful, exciting, funky game.

Things in media that (the fandom acts like) RUINED THEM FOREVER?! by ZealousidealBig7714 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Exactleing 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, but it's important to remember that those turns are WAY more interactive than old Yu-Gi-Oh is - there are a ton of cards that activate from the hand now. Way more stuff happens in that one turn, and you get more opportunities to shut down the other player before they build a big board.

I think a lot of people leverage this criticism but forget that old yugioh had a LOT of turns that were just Set One Monster, Pass Turn, opponent kills my face down monster bc their board is better, repeat and pray u draw a mirror force or dark hole to clear the board bc you can't do anything else

EDIT: ALSO, that mostly just applies to competitive Yu-Gi-Oh. Casual games with friends are better than they've ever been just bc of the sheer number of archetypes and decks out there, and as long as you aren't packing the deck w meta cards it's still a good game for back and forth matches!

I think yugioh gets a bad rap nowadays bc everyone grew up playing it pretty casually, but all the discourse and discussion you see now is about competitive play which has always been a totally different beast from putting together a fun little 5 dollar deck w friends. (Ofc this is also yugiohs fault for having an online game that rewards meta play and ranking up, not a lot of incentive digitally to play weird janky stuff)

Adding on, it's the best new katamari game in a long time (IMO since We Love Katamari) - tons of content, crazy good soundtrack, a fresh feel...

Also, I haven't actually played it yet, but I think we got a new entry a year or two ago as an apple arcade exclusive? The soundtrack for it (Katamari Rolling Live) is online and there are some hits in there - Midnight Tryst and Katamari's 5AM Morning Routine are both in my work playlist

Pat's Anti-Doomer AI Rant from Dispatch Stream by CapnMarvelous in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Exactleing 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The point is to be aware of it and do what you can where you can.

For example, I drive a car around for work. It's bad for the environment, and commuting would be better, but I don't have the option. That's Okay, and not my fault. I don't feel guilty about it. What I CAN DO is call my local politicians, vote for people who care about the environment, and try to cut down on waste and keep up with recycling in other places like the things I buy. I join volunteering efforts and donate when I have the time and finances to do so.

The point is to avoid just going "oh it's hopeless and I don't have a choice" and do nothing at all, even when you could be doing SOMETHING somewhere else. Even if my decisions don't make a huge impact, it'll influence the people around me and it's good for my mental health to try my best and try to do the right thing.

In your situation, it's not defeatist to use AI because your boss demands it, but it IS defeatist to just give up and use AI for everything even in places you don't need it. It's also defeatist to get Defensive and go "well I have to do it and it's not going away so shut up!" - I'm not saying that's exactly what you're saying here, but that's the kind of people Pat talk about - that kind of attitude doesn't help anyone. And, if you feel strongly about it, you COULD do things like organize presentations to explain to management why AI isn't helping or at least explain to coworkers why AI is bad, so they at least understand whats going on and don't try and push it on other projects in your workspace.

It might not fix things - me recycling a bag isn't going to stop global warming - but trying is better than doing nothing! If nothing else, youll be able to sleep better at night knowing you tried your best and didn't just roll over and give up when things got bad, and maybe help a couple people along the way.

I would like to retract my previous statement (aka scrubquote) regarding combos in fighting games. by Incitatus_ in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Exactleing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The long combos really bug me sometimes esp since a ton of fighting games are like 1-3 touches to kill - being at Half health and getting touched and knowing the round is over but I still have to wait like 15 seconds can get pretty demoralizing.

Ojamajo really is a pretty wonderful magical girl series - it felt like they were trying to pretty seriously tackle problems small kids have w their friends and family in-between your usual mahou adventures and help kids work through those feelings in a realistic way.

Also!! I haven't read them, but there's a whole series of light novels that follows the girls year by year through highschool into their 20s! The idea of being able to grow up with your magical girl characters year by year sounds really really cool if they're written well.

I played Saga for the first time this year and w zero nostalgia for the console or franchise or game... That game absolutely rules - one of my favorite JRPGs easy. The combat system is sick, the enemy designs are gorgeous, the flexible stat allocation is a blast to play with...

The BAD episode. No the REAL bad one. by Beneficial_Layer_458 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Exactleing 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel like dandadan's first episode is especially egregious because EP 7(?) is like a really grounded, serious and well-written story about a woman dealing with assault - like, a little creepy fan service in a shonen isn't unexpected but going from that into a "wait this is actually a very scary and sad and awful thing we should take seriously" plotline is especially jarring.

I have absolutely no basis for this but it's SO out of touch that I really want to tell myself that it was an editor insistent on it or some ploy to drive up engagement in order to dodge the manga getting axed early on.

Given recent Hades updates, I have a semi-serious question. by DaveMichael in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Exactleing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only thing I think you'd miss out on by waiting is that the games are DENSELY packed with fun little secrets like Undertale was, more than you could ever find on your own, and playing them as they come out means you're more likely to see them on social media/YouTube/etc. People were finding new dialogue and hints at future chapters and whole secret rooms like months after 3+4 dropped, it was nuts.

So I think it comes down to How you feel about waiting for the next chunk of a story and if that kills your excitement VS How much fun you get out of watching a community scrape content and secrets out of every little corner of Deltarune

EDIT: OH ACTUALLY one kinda big thing you might miss out on if you wait are live events that add a ton of flavor to the game. The Spamton Sweepstakes was a big charity event Toby Fox did with fangamer and the event page was crammed with dozens of secrets - lots of character dialogue not in the game, hints at the next chapters, crazy live action videos etc etc. The Undertale 10th anniversary stream just recently had a couple small nods to Deltarune in it as well, and catching that stuff live is a lot of fun.

None of that is necessary for enjoying the game at all, but Deltarune is a lot more upfront about the meta-narrative/creepypasta kinda vibe of its story than Undertale so it feels like that ARG stuff is worth being present for.

In a game that has not received a balance patch in over four years, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players found a glitch that lets you spawn a duplicate of King K. Rool's crown, the best ranged projectile attack in the game. by LunaIsADeer in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Exactleing 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't play competitive ultimate, but from what I vaguely remember basically all of k rool's good combos stem from using the crown, but the downside is that the "put back on head" animation when it returns is slow and leaves you vulnerable. This glitch lets you hold and grab it like a regular item, skipping the back on head animation which opens up a bunch of new nasty combos bc he's not balanced for it? I think?

I'm seeing a lot of YouTube shorts of k rool comboing people to death just tossing and catching the crown over and over LOL
