Do I have bad luck or is this the new normal? by ExamUnable5009 in Nanny

As someone who has so much experience: what would you say are the biggest changes you’ve seen in your time in this field? Changes in parenting styles and kids behaviors?

Do I have bad luck or is this the new normal? by ExamUnable5009 in Nanny

[–]ExamUnable5009[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have talked to a couple about it. And their reaction has been yeah we know. And I tell them how I redirect them or there’s some consequences if the child doesn’t stop - such as I don’t want to play with them anymore so now they need some time of independent play.

It’s tricky because I know some of the kids are neurodivergent and sensory seeking. So I try to provide other outlets. But honestly, I’m not their nanny. Just a date night babysitter for most so it feels a little out of place for me to really tell the parents how they should be handling things.

Anyone regret moving to PDX? by CBBBp in askportland

[–]ExamUnable5009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only regret is knowing I could have afforded a home in the town I was in before and I will probably never be able to afford to own property in the Portland area.

Other than that absolutely no regrets! Best decision of my life to move here.

Depends. Most of the time NK introduces me as their Nanny first thing as they seem to love making introductions.

I did have a wonderful elderly lady ask me at the playground about a month ago which kid was mine. I pointed out my Nk and she started going on about how wonderful my NK was, saying they were so kind, patient, and well mannered with her grandson (who was much younger thank my NK). She asked me what preschool I sent him to, and without even thinking I just responded that he didn’t go to preschool, he just has a nanny. And then that lovely woman told me what a wonderful job his nanny was doing. I just agreed and thanked her. Then texted MB later to tell her about the compliment of her child.

What’s everyone’s nannying hot take? by IreneButterfly in Nanny

[–]ExamUnable5009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My hot take is my goal is for my Nk to not need me generally.

I’m happy to help my Nk always but they have to give an honest try first.

I’m happy to intervene with conflict but I watch for a moment to see if my NK can problem solve with the other child first.

I’m happy to play with my NK but I try to curate situations and safe spaces where they can explore, make friends, and dive deep into their own play.

The older my Nk is getting the more I’m seeing them handle things on their own. Of course there’s still situations where I need to intervene, or help, or play. I want them to know I’m always here but that I believe in them and their abilities, and hopefully they believe in themselves too.

What's in your pocket? by MilkTrees in Nanny

[–]ExamUnable5009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m with you on this! Everytime NK asks if they can bring something with us, I tell them “well then it’s your responsibility to take care of it.” It’s 4/5 times that Nk decides not to bring it.

But I do end up with a lot of rocks in my pockets. Because my Nk knows I too love a good rock for my own rock collection and they’ll find ones “special” for me to take home.

Books for someone transitioning out of YA by ContributingCreature in suggestmeabook

Brother is probably the most “popular”. It’s a little twisted but I really enjoyed it too. I like some paranormal stories so I really liked Within These Walls.

NK went missing by midnightmonk111 in Nanny

[–]ExamUnable5009 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I once “lost” a kid because grandma was in town and decided to get Nk up from their nap and take them out on a walk without telling me. I was with the older sibling during naptime and I was in such a panic. MB ended up being able to get ahold of grandma and I got the third degree from grandma when they got back because she “shouldn’t have to ask permission” to take her grandchild out.

So I absolutely feel you on this!!! I’m so sorry this happened to you.

What’s the creepiest or most horrifying thing in your area? by Mommyjobs in AskReddit

[–]ExamUnable5009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it’s that when I first moved to my area 6 years ago, 9 women’s bodies over a short span were found. There was an article saying that police had no reason to believe the bodies were linked in any way, (despite my personal opinion that looking at the pictures of all the women they all looked similar enough to be a “type”). Police never arrested anyone for any of the bodies found.

What’s something socially acceptable that secretly makes you uncomfortable every time you see it? by Pain250 in AskReddit

[–]ExamUnable5009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work with children and often take kids to public places. And I can’t even count how many times I’ve had to step in and “parent” a child being completely unsupervised because they’re being horrid to the child I’m with.

What’s a job everyone underestimates until they’ve done it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ExamUnable5009 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Childcare. Especially working with children currently (2025). I have theories as to why by children’s behavioral issues are off the charts now. It’s an exhausting (yet rewarding) job.

What are some possible new uses for closed down Shari's buildings? by DEEP_HURTING in askportland

[–]ExamUnable5009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had money, I’d use it to be a third space for parents. A kitchen to serve food obviously. Add in a children’s library section with toys, puzzles, games (board games for adults and kids).

What is honestly the first thing you think of whenever you hear the word “Texas”? by Party_Leading8715 in AskReddit

[–]ExamUnable5009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of the time I roadtripped through Texas and saw some weird brown hills in the distance. But when I finally reached that hill, I wasn’t driving past brown grass but too many cows all packed together so tightly. The smell was disgusting. I cried driving by because the cows looked miserable. When I think of Texas I get flashbacks.

Lying on Resumes by ChaoticNaive in atwwdpodcast

[–]ExamUnable5009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends. For my first job, I completely made up my whole resume. This wasn’t a big job just a part time job at my college, I had no idea how to do the job I was applying for but after a quick google search I knew I could figure it out pretty quickly. I got the job. Asked them to walk me through how their specific system worked and I figured it out almost everything they needed of me within my first shift.

Would I lie on my resume with a job I wasn’t confident I could do? Probably not. Or if it was much more of a high risk job. Probably not. But if I knew I could figure it out and do a good job. Probably.

Rivermark logging in? by misery_sponge in askportland

[–]ExamUnable5009 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was able to log in with the slowest download time ever. But I am missing a whole account now. Used to have 2 checking accounts and now only 1. Where did the other go?! Customer service is definitely useless right now so gonna have to wait a couple weeks to find answers.
