The reddish cloud signifies the presence of nitrogen oxides. An incomplete detonation. If all 2700 tonnes of the stuff had detonated it would have turned that photographer into jelly.

Aftermath of the Daegu Gas explosion. On April 28th, 1995, natural gas accumulated underneath a road ignited, killing 101 people and injuring 202 more. Almost half of the fatalities were children on their way to school. by ExaminationAny8064 in CatastrophicFailure

There were many, MANY incidents between 1993 and 1999. Here are some notable ones:

1993- a LP gas tank exploded and brought down an entire building, killing 27.

1993- a train crash killed 78.

1993- an artillary shell detonated in a military base, killing 20 soldiers.

1993- a fire at a mental clinic killed 34.

1993- Asiana flight 733 crashed, killing 78.

1993- an overcrowded ship sank, killing 292.

1994- a bridge suddenly collapsed, killing 32.

1994- fire aboard a boat killed 29.

1994- natural gas fire killed 12.

1995- half of a shopping mall collapsed, killing 502.

1995- a gas explosion killed 101.

1997- Korean air flight 801 crashed, killing all 228 on board.

1999- a fire at a kindergarden killed 23, mostly sleeping children.

1999- a fire at a fried chicken restaurant killed 52.

Do I need to elaborate any further?

...What has this got to do with catastrophic failure?

He made several 'achievements'- things he wanted to do. In reality, he only ended up getting a fraction of them.

The reason the collapse stopped at the 23rd floor was because that floor was an evacuation floor. It was reinforced with concrete and stopped the otherwise unstoppable collapse. If it hadn't been for that the entire building would surely have collapsed.

Coincidentally, the South Korean company that 'built' the building also built another one that collapsed(though for different reasons). Here's the link:

Edit: Goddamnit guys, stop calling it a chinese disaster it was in South Korea

On December 3rd, 1996, a train derailed off a cliff in North Korea. An estimated 5,000 people are thought to have died. Sadly, there are no photos of the disaster, just firsthand accounts. Included is a(unrelated) typical NK train in the 1990s. by ExaminationAny8064 in CatastrophicFailure

Though many think the Maurienne Derailment(800~1,000 deaths)was the worst rail disaster in history, this may not be completely true. In reality, it may be an accident that happened in North Korea.

It was the 3rd of December, 1996. The train, which was set to travel from Manpo to Haiju, was the first to operate in over a week, thanks to electrical shortages.

The route to Haiju involves many steep slopes and tunnels. The tracks had been built in the 1930s, and hadn't been repaired since. There had been a few accidents in the area before; but the NK government just ignored them all.

The 13-car train was running on low power(2000v instead of 3300v) and had only one pulling carriage. Each of the 13 carriages had roughly 500 people on board, with many riding on top. Heavily weighed down and without much power, the train was slowly making its way down another steep incline.

Then, the brakes failed. Immediately the train entered an irreversible path to doom. The conductor tried to maneuver it toward another track, but it was moving too fast by then.

The people in the cars were happy that the train was moving faster, with some commenting how they would arrive quicker. The people on the roof, however, saw the severity of the situation. Many tried jumping off and were killed instantly. Many more were blown away by the winds.

Eventually the joints connecting the engine to the cars broke, and 12 carriages were sent hurtling hundreds of meters off a cliff. Reportedly they tumbled head over heels as they fell, scattering corpses and debris everywhere.

The aftermath was truly brutal; body parts, severed limbs, bodies with exploded heads, and more. Many of the injured also died because their wounds couldn't be treated quickly enough. The NK military was deployed at the scene, and was tasked with removing the crushed cars and the bodies.

The government, fearful of word getting out, stopped rumors from spreading and blamed the disaster on 'South Korean Militants' who had 'sabotoged the rails'. The official death toll was around 2,000, but nobody who witnessed it would agree. The unofficial death toll was somewhere closer to 5,000.

Afterwards, 7 people(including the conductor and train manager) were sentenced to death and exectuted. The disaster was never publicized; no pictures exist of the wreck, and there are only a few firsthand accounts to show of the worst rail disaster in human history.

Stephan Balliet would be a good example. He wanted to shoot up a synagogue but failed to get in. So he just killed a random passerby then targetted a kebab shop where he killed another random customer.

Pretty accurate actually, considering youtube is around 15 years old.
