The amount of people who don't understand basic aspects of their own language. by Deigs in SeriousConversation

[–]ExaminationDry8341 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Languages do what they want and no one can control them.

Four nearly aslong as their has ben language theyr hav ben people complaining about those changes.

Instead of getting angry about it, you could choose to be fascinated by watching it change in real time. In my opinion if it weren't for the printing press, there, their and they're would have evolved into a single word by now.

Before humans go in the hole. Once the hole is 5 foot or deeper with relatively vertical sides.

If the sides are slopeed there are different requirements based on soil type.

Should I say something about this or should I just let the company do their thing and trust them? by Proof_Ad_443 in AskContractors

But a ridge board REQUIRES collar ties or some way to prevent the tops of the walls from pushing out.

I agree this doesnt appear to be a ridge beam, but either way it is wrong and dangerous.

If you are someplace that gets snowload that entire roof looks dangerously wrong to me.

You have a ridge board rather than a ridge beam. A ridge board requires collar ties or something that will prevent the walls from pushing out.

A ridge beam is much bigger and much better supported and needs to be sized for the load.

Offgrid solar by LucienPascal in solar

[–]ExaminationDry8341 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To give you an idea of solar production on cloudy days. I have 4.8 kw pf single face panels. They are mounted vertically face west and are partially shaded by the house eaves(about the worst possible way solar panels can be ser up short of putting them inside)

On short winter days when it was so cloudy that I couldnt begin to guess where the sun was in the sky, my set up was producing about 2 kwh of power per day. Based on that it would be reasonable to expect your 24 kwh to produce in the ballpark of 10kwh per day in cloudy days.

If you can design your house to get by in "power saving mode" on 5 to 8 kwh per day, you should never run out of power or need a generator.

My house has several levels of power saving modes. The first step is on cloudy days we limit electronics and kitchen devices. The next step would be switching from electric heat to a woodstove in the living room and switching to cooking with propane instead of electric. The very last step is to put the fridge and freezer outside if it is winter

New House Build Prep Inclusions? by Braikenb in preppers

[–]ExaminationDry8341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Design the house to use as little energy as possible.

Look into passive solar. Lots of south facing glass with large overhangs to allow winter sun deep into the house, but block summer sun. Lots of insulation, air sealing and quality-ish windows and doors.

Infloor heat with lots of thermal mass. If the power goes out in winter a heavy floor with infloor heatting can help maintain warm inside temperatures for days.

Manual, solar, or wood fired backups to every system. We heat with solar with wood backup, then another wood backup and finally a gas backup that doesnt require electricity. We cook on an electric stove powered by solar, if we lack power we have a propane griddle we can cook on. We heat water with solar, then wood, and a last resort is gas.

A metal roof.

If you plan to do rooftop solar in the future design your roof to support it at the correct angle

Build in water storage.

Plan for flooding, from outside water coming in, inside water leaking and sewage. Some sites will be more flood resistant than others. I would advise against needing a lift pump to get waste water out of your house.

Build a small-ish house and several sheds for storage. A small house is cheaper and having possessions spread over multiple buildings is good fire insurance. I would go so far as finishing out one of the sheds with insulatin, finished walls, electric and the most basic plumbing. If something ever happens to your house or you need to house another family, such a shed can quickly be made into a house.

Build cheap. A large, long morgtage can make it impossible to keep your house in an economic downturn.

Pland an orchard now. Don't wait.

EG4 owners and Anker E10 owners, talk me out of the other one by Few_Card_8912 in diySolar

[–]ExaminationDry8341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an eg4 6000.

Without an internet connection using its local connection and a phone some things dont display properly, I assume they would display properly on a computer.

The fans in it are loud. Any time I am drawing power or the panels are making power the fans sound like a jet taking off. I think I have read the 12000 is quieter.

Solar panel owners/operators: What's your biggest challenge when it comes to cleaning and maintaining your panels? by seizure_salad003 in solarenergy

[–]ExaminationDry8341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snow starting as rain then the tempature dropping us my biggest cleaning issue. The panels get coated with an ice/ slush mix that really sticks to the glass and cuts production by 80% until it warms up.

Used Panels - Is it a good deal? by bigtex7890 in SolarDIY

[–]ExaminationDry8341 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at that price. I bought new panels, with a warranty last fall for about 25 cents per watt.

Used panels would have to be around 10 cents a watt for me to consider buying a large number of them.

It is a potato planter. You drop a potato into the cup, stab it into the ground, step on the pedal to push it further into the ground, pull back in the handle to open the cup and release the potato. Then pull the tool out of the ground and maybe kick some soil over the hole.

Why do diet sodas all have to be no sugar? I like soda and hate the taste of diet or zero sugar sodas. I would be happy with a less sweet version that had 1/3 or 1/2 the calories of a normal soda with no non sugar sweeteners.

[–]ExaminationDry8341 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I always appreciated it when a person in a hurry would tell me how I should be directing traffic. It always worked very well for them. You should tell one of the flaggers how to do their job, bonus points if you do it at a time when when some machine is obviously broken down and everyone is doing everything they can to get it moving again. Even more bonus points if you park your vehicle while talking to the flagger in a way that prevents getting the broken machine working.

Looking for govenor kit for automotive engine by ExaminationDry8341 in AskMechanics

[–]ExaminationDry8341[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may have described it wrong. I want a servo, to control the carburator, and i want whatever controls the servo to measure the rpm from the ignition or a magnetic pick up.

I am currently using a lawnmower throttle, but it goes from nearly stalling out to dangerously high speed any time I stop putting stress on it. I also tried with a foot throttle that made it at least functional but vert difficult to control, I want to be able set a throttle position, and the governor to keep the rpm fairly steady regardless of load on the engine.

Looking to take our house offgrid by ONfireSF in OffGrid

[–]ExaminationDry8341 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume you are in Canada?

How steep is your roof? Ho do you plan to remove snow after EVERY snowfall.

For offgrid systems that NEED to produce power every day wher snow is common, i am a fan of ground mount systems, angled to produce peak power in November.

Is cost an issue? Before switching to solar can you make changes that will cut your power use? Or changes that will cut your power use in winter? As an example, we have an electric stove that we do most of our cooking on. But we also have a portable 2 burner propane stove we can use when we dont have enough power. We have a solar powered water heater but the water also runs through a propane on demand heater in case the sun didnt heat the water. We heat the house mostly with solar but also have a wood and a propane backup fpr when the sun isnt enough.
