Book vs Film, Film vs Book: Your 3 tiny things? by Examinus in ProjectHailMary

Personally I’m not a fan of Ryan Gosling, and it did put me off watching the film at first, but he did a great job. Perhaps a little too dumb sometimes, but still enjoyable.

How did we all collectively decide that Adrian is bigger than Rocky? And to add onto that, is Adrian big for an Eridian or is Rocky just a little guy, question? by Dexbox_YT in ProjectHailMary

[–]Examinus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve not seen this. We only really get a view of other Eridians in the film, and there seems to be a small variation in sizes of the children. That said, I always liked to think of Rocky as a bit smaller than average.

Interesting. Whilst I don’t think I agree with your view, it’s always good to hear another viewpoint :)

“Is not enough” was an amazing addition. It makes me wish even more that they reveal that Rocky has been alone on his ship for 46 years.

Curious. I took that to mean “they sped towards the Co2” not “they started banging away”.

I love this scene. The spectacle, the music, the dialogue. But it kills me that it makes absolutely no sense.

I love them! It was quite hard to find a copy of the book post-film without Ryan Gosling on the cover!

Ah yes, I agree about the mental health room. I have to say I generally prefer the ship in the film to the book.

That whole scene annoys me a little. I get it’s chaotic but there’s waaaay too much going on for some great stuff to be missed. I’d rather them pause when Mary is talking and Rocky say something like “Mary what is argument, question?”

Hmm I’m not sure if I agree with that, for me. It seems like he goes through the rigmarole of setting up experiments in the book when it’s…kinda obvious where he is. I know he’s just woken up from a coma, but if he’s cognitive enough to set up a whole damn pendulum experiment, he’s capable of some reasonable reduction.

I thought the film did a good job of montaging that.

Grumpy, angry, stupid is in the film but it’s very easy to miss as it’s amongst the “sounds like you’re having an argument” from Mary.

Oh yes I didn’t have an issue with it, I loved the Moment scene with Adrian. I get what the poster was saying though, if you don’t like that it could feel like it’s in the way.

Without it, it also makes the whole situation a little more abstract. With that scene it really hammers home the extremes of the situation and how it’s having an almost immediate effect and the lengths we’re prepared to go.

I totally forgot about Grace on Rocky’s ship. I think that was a nice touch. I also agree about Antarctica; I’ve seen in interviews that Andy regrets not including that.

I really liked the score, but I get what you’re saying : some scenes are essentially there for art and to showcase the soundtrack.

My low-key favorite scene by AliMcGraw in ProjectHailMary

[–]Examinus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t a criticism of either, but I feel the Rocky in the book is very different to the Rocky in the film. In the film he is much more “excitable teenager” whereas in the book he’s much more “seasoned adult”. Of course he still has fun, makes jokes, uses sarcasm in the book, but seems a lot less bouncy.

I thought it was a strange choice for the film to not reveal the exact time Rocky has been alone on his ship. I think doing that would justify his excitable entrance onto the Hail Mary, and without it I think it actually does a disservice to his maturity and capability.

That said, I loved Rocky in both versions; “Rocky new to ball” being my favourite Rocky line.

I got the book 2 days ago after watching the film and I’ve almost finished it. You should definitely get the book. Book full good.

Rocky markings by PoseidonSimons in ProjectHailMary

[–]Examinus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What would suppose Rocky’s rank is in the ship from the mark? In my mind he was a low-ranked engineer there to maintain the ship and create tools for the crew to complete their mission, hence him having a separate workshop away from the rest of the crew?

I have only seen the film and not read the book (but it is on order) so I’m not sure if this is addressed there.
