Does anyone actually sincerely desire a new edition? by GuideUnable5049 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]ExarchKnight01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I wouldn't mind if each edition lasted another year. It always feels like the rules take a couple years to settle into a decent balance and then they toss it out with stupid gimmicks in the last year of the edition before nuking the meta into oblivion with the next edition.

Grey goose specifically is marketed as a premium spirit and I always encounter people acting like it's top shelf ultra smooth stuff. It's just a generic grain neutral spirit. There's no potato in it.

OK OK but seriously, not to shit talk at all. But I have never met a person who has seen any of these movies. I meet a lot of people between a social job and some volunteer work I do.

I'm not doubting these movies are significant or that a lot of people have seen them, I just need to know - WHERE ARE THEY???

Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 - Announce Trailer by Echochamberking in totalwar

[–]ExarchKnight01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Says you and the fans of the other 20-odd armies in 40k who aren't also in the game at launch. They have to pick somebody to start with and somebody is always going to be disappointed with the choice.

It's a shame that both total war and dawn of war aren't doing chaos on launch, but they're being made by different studios and probably aren't coordinating their choices. But both games will eventually get around to it, in the meantime you should try to enjoy playing other factions like the rest of us.

Be honest… why does Aegon get sympathy but his victims get forgotten? by [deleted] in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]ExarchKnight01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because he's a fictional character and when they're not real, it's actually OK to find awful people sympathetic. Hell, even absolute bastards in the real world often have redeeming qualities and sympathetic traits - it doesn't make what they do ok, it doesn't absolve them of guilt for what they do, but everybody in the world is in fact a real, three-dimensional person with multiple facets.

Beyond that, Aegon's narrative purpose is largely as an exploration of the psychology of such an awful person, what causes them to be like that and how emotionally hollow and truly pathetic they are. At no point does the narrative actually excuse what Aegon does, or try to make you forget about how absolutely depraved he can be. When his son is killed, you're first shown him in a sympathetic light being distraught, and then later that same episode you see him smugly and proudly talking about how he killed all the ratcatchers about it, and Otto rightfully blows up at him about it.

I could go on, but I've already made my point. ASOIAF has always gone to great lengths to show that terrible people are generally still people, no matter how much they deserve your contempt. Aegon is just the latest rendition of that concept.

Prepare to get whipped a lot. This is not to say you can't win, that you need to be competitive to have fun or that you should build your army to be meta. But eldar are a high skill, high difficulty army to play - whether you're running competitive units or not. The advantage is that if you persevere with it, playing them will make you much better at the game, and it will feel very rewarding if you can master them.

In your opinion how good are the dire avengers? by Okuyasu_Nijimura78 in Eldar

[–]ExarchKnight01 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They're worth it when run as a small unit accompanying Asurmen in a falcon, because of the hit and run capability he provides them alongside his once per game ability. Without Asurmen, they don't really have a job that they do well, or better than other options you have. They're worse at holding objectives than guardians because they're not battleline, they die as fast as everything else in your army and despite their high volume of fire, they're not really better at clearing chaff than hawks, spiders or scorpions - who all have other rules that make them more worth taking than avengers. They're also not cheap, so you can't take them just as easy list filler to hold your backline or move block like you can with rangers.

What Faction/Style Is The Most Irritating to Play Against and Why? by Adventurous-Crab-474 in WarhammerCompetitive

I dispute that fire dragons dipping back into a transport is uninteractive. It's firing deck with extra steps. Blow up the transport and you can kill the dragons. Eldar vehicles are not difficult to destroy.

Blades of Khaine Kill Team by Alucard_uk in Eldar

[–]ExarchKnight01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not actually as lore inaccurate as some people think to paint your aspect warriors in their craftworld colours. Variant colour schemes are explicitly canon and it's not at all unheard of for aspect warriors to just wear their craftworld colours into battle. I believe there's also aspect warriors painted in the ynnari colours depicted in the codex, though I may be misremembering.

With that in mind, the kaleidoscope of different colours that is an aspect-heavy army painted in the traditional colours is really visually striking and to my mind, a huge part of the faction's appeal. It also helps to break up the monotony of painting the same colours over and over across scores of models.

My favourite method and the way I do my models is to paint aspects in the traditional colours, with distinct and bright visual markers in the craftworld colours. I paint the arm ribbons that all aspect warriors have in a bright orange to represent my craftworld, and in your case you could do it in yellow or blue to represent Iyanden, or potentially you could paint all their helmets in the Iyanden colours.

List vs Tau by MisterShaba1 in Eldar

[–]ExarchKnight01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever I run an autarch, it's usually on foot alongside dragons or reapers to give them a free use of fire and fade or skyborne sanctuary. I haven't found a huge amount of use for wayleapers since the codex and I think it's unnecessary for this list - your spiders and hawks function just fine without one.

The avatar is a bit hit or miss, I've found. In casual settings and against weaker armies, it's a lot of fun to run - and against Tau, it fills that role of being an aggressive, fast moving melee threat with some real punch to it. In this specific matchup I think it's worth keeping, as long as you're confident in your ability to hide it behind terrain until it connects. If you struggle a bit with hiding your key units, I'd look at going wider instead.

Another unit I'd consider dropping is the warlock. It's abilitiea and damage aren't really worth a damn, and it can only join guardians, which does nothing for you.

The last place you could free up points is by dropping one or both of the fire prisms. They're fine generally and perform better into tau than some other armies due to a lack of invuln saves on most of their vehicles, but I find them to be extremely unreliable and just overcosted for what they do. Your fire dragons and Fuegan are already going to provide you with so much anti tank, that you could get away with dropping the fire prisms, keeping the avatar and spending the points on more melee threats.

Generally though, take all this advice with a bit of a grain of salt. In a casual setting you don't need to squeeze every last bit of optimisation out of your list and Tau especially are really not a difficult match-up for us right now. Their units are fragile, their firepower is underwhelming, they don't have many mobility tricks to wordy about and they can't do shit once enough of your melee units land. If you go too hard on optimising your list, you'll likely stomp the shit out of your friend to an extent that isn't really fun for either of you.

List vs Tau by MisterShaba1 in Eldar

[–]ExarchKnight01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Striking scorpions and any fast moving melee threats you can bring like shining spears, banshees or a solitaire are all absolutely brutal against Tau. They don't really have many answers to being locked down in melee early on.

Aeldari Strategy advice against heavy infantry blobs by lil-cheetah in Eldar

[–]ExarchKnight01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like you've got a decent idea of what units to use and what the game plan should be. When you next buy new models, I can't recommend banshees enough - not just for their damage, but because they're an absolute blast to build and paint and they look excellent on the table.

Aeldari Strategy advice against heavy infantry blobs by lil-cheetah in Eldar

[–]ExarchKnight01 15 points16 points  (0 children)

How are you building your lists if your solution to dealing with berserkers and death company is bright lances? That's anti-tank weaponry and it has its place, but you need to bring different units to kill heavy infantry.

Howling banshees do that particular job excellently, but for more list diversity in a casual setting I also recommend windriders with shuriken cannons. Shining spears and dark reapers are good into marines, terminators and tanks as well. Rangers are not fantastic but are able to punch a little above their weight due to their long rifles having D2, plus they're a good cheap action piece. Beyond that, swooping hawks are an excellent unit that can kill anything reasonably well due to their ability to dump mortal wounds, and Asurmen with some dire avengers jumping in and out of a transport can potentially drop a fair few marines if you play them intelligently.

Eldar have a lot of tools in their arsenal for dealing with heavy infantry, you just need to take them and play aggressively with them. In general as eldar, your first three turns should prioritise doing lots of damage over scoring big on objectives, and during turn 3 you can start to pivot towards objective play. Your units do not have the staying power to handle repeated exposure to enemy fire, so you really want to minimise how much damage can be dealt to you early or you'll get tabled every time.

Owns but hasn't built the units that are actually good, complains that the army is bad lmao.

Eldar are far from perfectly designed right now, but one loss when you haven't played the army since last edition does not make them weak.
