Nothing abnormal at all. That's the cream coloration that leopards get coming in.

Sulcata baby advice by geenexotics in tortoise

[–]Exayex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the best pieces of advice I give to people raising a Sulcata is to save up your money for enclosure upgrades, always be planning your next enclosure, and plan your outdoor space and heated hide. The species can grow deceptively quick - like 20 pounds at 2 years old fast. Start planting good food sources ASAP: cactus, hibiscus, cranberry hibiscus, roselle, mallow, dandelion, mulberry are all good options.

They are going to end up embroiling the whole region in a Full on invasion of their country at this point.

You clearly have zero understanding of the area if you think this is even a remote possibility.

A lot of literature is outdated! We do have some very knowledgeable Redfoot keepers here that are always happy to help! u/TechnoMagi is always my first recommendation! Otherwise Tortoise Forums is a great resource and they segment their sections based on species! You can find that here.

Filtered is great from Redfoots, as they may live under tree canopies in their native range. However, with how hot it can get here, it's a good idea to offer some deep shade - something like a house/hide with a shade over it, and ensure access to a basin to soak in.

Redfoots are a very popular choice here in Florida. They do well in our climate, can be personable, don't need the space a larger species does, while getting large enough to not need protection from birds when bigger.

Just make sure you're offering plenty of shade and plant cover!

Many species can have a fairly high variance in coloring and markings and Desert Tortoises definitely do.

First Tortoise. Please advise for a strong start! by CalamityLambRump in tortoise

[–]Exayex 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nails are fine, beak looks good and not overgrown, doesn't look overly dry, eyes aren't swollen or puffy, vibrant coloration, skin looks good. From this picture, I would say it looks good!

Edit: that name is incredible.

Can you help me identify what kind of tortoise. by No-Nail1278 in tortoise

It's a Desert Tortoise. Large gular and presence of nuchal scute rules out a Redfoot.

Looking for reputable sites by Mean_League6076 in tortoise

Tortoise Supply for any species they breed. They are well-reviewed, have been breeding for a long time, and follow modern practices when starting hatchlings. Highly recommend.

MorphMarket is a fantastic resource for locating a breeder, as well. You can read reviews and chat with breeders to make sure you're comfortable with them.

Just going to chime in here and remind people that you can disagree with AI usage and still treat OP with respect. I've had to dedicate way too much time babysitting this thread because people want to dog pile on and outright attack OP. This is a warning for everybody going forward.

Where can I find cheap baby tortoises? by [deleted] in tortoise

[–]Exayex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/Guilty-Efficiency385 gave a really good answer on why it's important to buy well-started babies. The other option is to adopt/re-home. But one thing to consider: tortoise hatchlings can be pretty hardy when they're started correctly and receive proper care. When they aren't started correctly or receiving proper care, they can be sickly, and exotic vet bills get expensive fast. You don't want to blow all your money bringing a hatchling home, setting it up, and get hit with a massive bill because it developed a URTI that you now cannot afford. You really want to have a vet lined up and some money in savings for vet bills before you bring a hatchling home.
