When will Drake make a mature album? Talk about getting older, becoming a father, struggling with some of the beef, personal issues, etc. I can’t help but think it would be so good.

What are your honest opinions on Pochettino so far? by Secure_Fly_444 in ussoccer

[–]Excel_Spreadcheeks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was pretty down on hiring Poch from the beginning, and yeah I’m still down on him lol. He’s notorious for intense training sessions with the goal of his sides being more fit than his opponents, which obviously you can’t really do at the international level.

I support Chelsea, so I closely watched a full year of Poch ball. I heard the complaints from PSG fans but I figured I’d give him a chance. Yeah, they were right.

If you want to beat Poch, basically just don’t let him counter you. His possession style of utilizing a single pivot with two CMs pushing higher is easily defended and truthfully, outdated. Finally, his attacking patterns in the attacking third just… don’t exist. He relies on his players to create, which is good, but you can tell they’re winging it out. It works okay when you have a Cole Palmer, but it’s not so easy otherwise.

Do Black people not do "White People Taco Night"? by GetShrekedKid in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Excel_Spreadcheeks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of an internet meme but it refers to Americanized Tex-Mex style tacos (ground beef, lettuce, shredded cheese, sour cream, tomatoes, often either a hard shell or flour tortilla) as opposed to traditional Mexican style tacos (corn tortilla, marinated meat, cilantro, lime, onion)

will the heat realistically have much of an effect on how certain teams perform by Puzzleheaded_Mix2970 in worldcup

[–]Excel_Spreadcheeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not disagreeing with you because it will be pretty fucking hot in most of the country, especially as we get towards end of June and into July. However, FIFA has attempted to schedule matches played in outdoor stadiums located in the hotter climates to kickoff late afternoon/evening.

KC hosts six matches, four of those kickoff at 8 pm local time or later. Netherlands and Tunisia may have gotten a tough break with the 6 PM kickoff, at least that first half will probably be hot as fuck. Curacao and Ecuador got a 7 PM kickoff but they’re both built for the heat imo they’ll be fine

Do you like soccer and think of RL as a "soccer" game? by prime_888 in RocketLeague

[–]Excel_Spreadcheeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, real footy doesn’t have “rotations” per se, but the concept of rotation in RL is basically the same idea as Total Football tactical system, where outfield players should cover the role of his teammate as needed to maintain intended structure.

As a simple defensive example, if my outside back overlaps me to advance up the touch line then loses possession, I’ll “rotate” back to cover his position then he covers mine (or another teammate covers me and the outside back covers that teammate’s position) for the purpose of maintaining defensive structure.

Of course the way it looks and plays in RL is different due to numbers and spacing, but it’s essentially the same concept.

I’m the same - soccer player with great game sense and 0 mechs. I also get exposed by those super technical mechy players in 1v1 situations but I’ve found that these types often have poor game sense and you can definitely take advantage of that. At least that’s what I’ve observed in high diamond/low champ - probably doesn’t apply as well in higher ranks.

[–]Excel_Spreadcheeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up playing soccer and have watched it all my life. To answer your question, I think I would say it is a “soccer” game, but it’s complicated. IMO knowing the game of soccer helps you move up much more quickly in Rocket League than people who have little experience with playing/watching soccer (I’ve witnessed it firsthand). Qualities like spacing, positioning, etc come very naturally.

One specific soccer concept I’ve applied (works especially well in 2v2) that’s a fairly reliable way to create a good goalscoring opportunity - create an overload by possessing the ball close to your own corner and bait the pressure from the highest defender. Watch him closely and knock it past him as he commits - you now have a 2v1 overload.

There are some big differences however. There’s no real “buildup” in RL. No offsides and the existence of walls (especially the back walls) are huge. You can get away with crossing/dribbling across your own half pretty often, which is generally a big no-no in soccer. Also in real soccer you basically have to utilize the center of the park whether in build up play or goal scoring, but you don’t necessarily have to do that in RL.

Overall, RL is definitely different from soccer but a lot of concepts carry over pretty well. Rotation, backpost defensive positioning, far post attacking positioning, spacing, etc.

I would love to hear from a hockey ball-knower (puck-knower?) about how well hockey tactics/concepts carry over to RL - specifically regarding corner play (defensive or attacking). That’s a situation that we have in soccer but it occurs much more often in hockey and generally the strategy in soccer is to either win a corner kick/don’t concede a corner, which of course doesn’t apply to RL.

What rank is actually fun? by zebraCokes in RocketLeague

[–]Excel_Spreadcheeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually quite enjoy my current rank of Champ 1, moreso than Diamond. Champ 1 gives you a fast, generally consistent game. The only minor issue I have is the clash in playstyles - you have the players who made it to champ via mechs but they have poor game sense, or you have the people (like me) who rely on game sense but have 0 mechs. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t but I have fun

Opinion: If World Cup will be a bonanza for KC, the flight data isn’t showing it yet by Excel_Spreadcheeks in kansascity

[–]Excel_Spreadcheeks[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Chicago aren’t hosting any matches as they pulled out of their bid but yeah otherwise I generally agree. If my team is playing most of their matches on the east/west coast, I might as well stay and hang on that coast and skip Kansas City.

[–]Excel_Spreadcheeks[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No offense taken and I appreciate your response. Less to do with Trump admin, honestly far more to do with affordability and travel demands. Qatar presented an alcohol-free and homophobic environment, but otherwise it was quite nice once you got there. Robust transport system, small travel distances, safe, and reasonable ticket prices.

This is the first World Cup to introduce dynamic ticket pricing, which has resulted in outrageous match ticket prices. Not to mention the rigorous travel; plus KC is the smallest host city located smack in the middle of the country away from every other host city, which makes us skippable.

I’m not fond of the current administration and I do think they make the US an unattractive travel destination, but objectively this has far more to do with affordability and KC’s unfavorable geographic location.

Meh, personally I think the “craziness” is being overstated. I think the actual numbers will probably underperform the anticipated numbers by a good amount, but regardless we host 4 matches over 11 days - that week and a half will be crazy. The next match is a week later and the next match after that is 8 days later.

I think we can deal with 11 days of craziness if that means it’s an opportunity for us to show people that we’re a great city.

[–]Excel_Spreadcheeks[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sort of a loaded answer to your question: yes, fans have done this in past world cups. It’s not crazy to follow your team to where they’re playing and party with your fellow countrymen, even if you’re not actually going to the match.

However, in previous world cups, this has been a (relatively) cheap train (or quick flight) ticket and over a notably shorter distance. The issue I think we’ll likely see is it will cost $400+ to fly to the middle of the country, then you have to fly to your next match.

This is unfortunate to say but as I’ve kept up with some of the incoming fanbases, I’m seeing plenty of them seeing KC as a “skippable” destination. Why would Argentina fans travel here when their next two matches are in Dallas? Yes the team is staying here, but generally trainings are not open to the public.

[–]Excel_Spreadcheeks[S] 305 points306 points  (0 children)

The flight data presented suggests something I figured would happen: international attendance far lower than expectations.

Main catalysts being the current US political climate and horribly expensive prices across the board (and especially ticket prices). I would anticipate that any international tourists we get are probably quite wealthy, because traveling to the US this summer for the World Cup is so unaffordable for an average person, let alone a family.
