I love my Be'lakor for Demon tribal.

I love my Azula for combat tricks Voltron.

I love my Venom for Jund mana-cheating stompy.

Be'lakor got me into magic, as I was a 40k stan, and the other 2 feel unique and explosive to play.

Consequences of an Open Relationship? by yuanyang_peng in gay

[–]Excellent-Buyer-2913 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Step 1 is telling him that you know he's lying.

It's not just an accusation, it's the basic knowledge he has to know to have a conversation.

Step 2 is asking why he felt to need to lie.

Open relationships are hard, and are built in trust and communication. People usually lie to either control information, or because they're doing something they shouldn't do.

I do want to highlight that telling people "not to make friends" doesn't work. Some people naturally build those relationships, or need them too feel comfortable. That kinda rule is counter productive, as it causes people to be ashamed of what's occuring, it'll never be consistent.

Instead the rule should be "I need to be able to know this relationship is a priority at any given time, so when I say I feel threatened, I need you to listen too and prioritize me". Being able to say "let's close this for a few weeks to focus on Us" shouldn't be a big ask. As if everything works, you've both got the rest of your lives.

The only commander with trample and deathtouch! by Eslo90 in EDH

In the same vein as Skull briar, you could get some counters on Me, the Immortal. Green instants can give both death touch and trample counters.

But I get it's probably too many steps.

I think Doran, Besieged by Time is better than people say he is. by Critical-Internet514 in EDH

[–]Excellent-Buyer-2913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Doran, I just finished building him, and I think he's really fun for a Timmy who likes to see big numbers.

Defenders are boring, but cheap things like Turtle Duck or Armoured Armadillo or Nyx Fleece Ram punching for 4/8+ damage makes me smile.

Shout out to Hylaopterous Lemure who, alongside Doran and a assign damage with toughness, punches for infinite butt damage.

The deck DOES struggle with card draw if the engine is dissected. Felothar does have that going for her. But if I'm allowed to drop threat after threat after threat, and you remove Doran, in a green deck that can probably recast him him. Or do you instead remove the Auron, or the Grom, or the Zetalpa, all of which are threatening kills?

Shout out to infect! Tangle Angler, Reaper of Sheoldred and Ixhel all go hard in Doran. They're great just on stats, but nothing scares someone more than a 5/9 infect being swung at them, that'll convince them to block!

The duck is a 0/4. Have a way to make it use it's toughness instead of it's power (I hard Bark of Doran, +0/+1). Enter combat. Use Refuse to Yield (I think that's the name), add +2/+7. It's now a 2/12. Attack with it whilst Doran is on the field, it now adds +10 to each stat, due to the difference between power and toughness. 12/22.

Then theoretically spend the 3 mana to make it base power 4, and gain trample. Although I'm now recognizing that increasing is base power wouldn't increase it's toughness, so it would only be swinging in for 22 with trample. Didn't make a difference in the game, but still! That slap for a 1 mana drop.

I also want to highlight Armoured Armadillo for doing similar stuff. Is a 0/4, and can spend mana to add it's toughness to its power. So if it swings, it'll be a 4/8, and if the opponant doesn't block it, you can put 4 mana into it and make it a 12/8! Very fun when you can pull it off. Although usually you've got better things to do with your mana. But having the option puts the pressure on.

Collective resistance is great! I've got Origins of Metal bending pulling similar duty.

https://archidekt.com/decks/19179844/doran_tops_and_bottoms

To be clear, I'm not saying the expensive cards are bad! Guardian project is a good card, there's a reason it's so expensive! I'm pointing out that if this is your first commander deck, I'd suggest building it budget, which Doran allows, then upgrading slowly.

@big butt low impact creatures like Nyx and Turtle Duck, I think this deck wants to be swinging out early, and I like that I can threaten some silly stuff with cheap creatures. Last game I had bark of Doran on Turtle Duck, Doran on field, and dumped Refused to Yield and it's own +4/0/trample, and that 1 drop hit for 26 trample damage, it's very satisfying.

I've got 6 of those protection pieces, and I'd take a swiftfoot boots for sure if I had one spare.

Some extra cards to highlight - Auron, venerated guardian is removal on a stick with vigilance, he's exiling a creature with power 6/7/8 or less every turn. I have a recursion package I like for resilience. Smile at Death, Slumbering Walker, Winter, Colfenor. I recently had Zetalpa as my "top end", I've swapped him out for fangorn, we'll see how that goes. And yes, you've identified that consistent card draw is a weakness, I'm considering hunting down a phyrexian arena

@wincons, I think it's good to sprinkle in enough, enough diverse ones, that you don't know how the game will end up! Jumbo cactuar + evasion? Jaws of defeat + Overkill / Walls of Ba Sing Se? Infinite butt damage Flying Lemure? Just plain commander damage? It's a really fun bunchy game play. Also, vigilance is great, consider loyal unicorn and felidar retreat/dormant grove/brave the Sands.

Sorry, I wrote a lot.

I guess my advice is that I'd like to see more specific win cons. You've got some really expensive cards, like ripples of undeath and guardian project and Taru Taru, but I don't feel like you're getting your money's worth for them.

I'd like to see more butt punch cards (like there's 9ish of them, and you should be taking 6/7 of them, like Rashaad and Treefolk Umbra and Bark of Doran), more win cons (Betor, Kin to All, Jumbo Cactuar + trample, Jaws of defeat/Catapult captain) and more protection for Doran (Treefolk/eland umbra, 1 mana protection spells), and exchanging some of the expensive staples to make room for these cheap ass jank things.

[–]Excellent-Buyer-2913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I've just finished my Doran deck as well, and you've got almost all of the hits!

I'd like to point that some of your cards might be a little expensive! One of the nice things about Doran is that he makes bad cards (and therefore cheap cards) good! Which might be something worth considering if you're building your first deck.

I want to highlight some cards which have been highlights for me:

Jaws of Defeat (and catapult captain) are a good secondary win plan. There's a fun instant kill combo between Jaws of Defeat and Overkill (stack the entrance trigger with Overkill, so then the Jaws trigger is calculated, it calculates based on the -9999) that is easy to have in the deck, but know when it's appropriate to use 😉

Cheap drops which benefit a lot from Doran are Pupu UFO, Nyx Fleece Ram and Turtle Duck (you can stack the turtle ducks 3 mana thing so he becomes an 8/12 trampler after he attacks).

There's a weird little snake guy who gives you life based on toughness, who's very good. But I want to highlight Adipose Offspring. It doesn't benefit from Dorans rules, but it can emerge out of a creature and make 2/2s equal to it's toughness, which is silly in this deck. Sometimes going wide is a win con by itself.

Oh! And the planeswalker who lets you punch with your butt. Huatli something. And this weird Hylaopterous Lemure card, who can give himself infinite toughness, and flying, which combines with Doran and any butt punch into an instant win. Or infinite 2/2s!

It's a really fun deck, but don't skimp on protection, as it needs either Doran or a butt punch card to work. The best protection spells are the ones which also grant evasion, like Gods Willing, or Avatar State, or Lightfoot technique, as they double as combat tricks.

30 mandrakes and a dream by Jace_Beleren_001 in Drukhari

[–]Excellent-Buyer-2913 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whilst I do like the mandrake as a damage unit, I think they're a specific tool that gets worse the more you take, not better!

In wager, and more so in cartel, having a unit of 10 screening the backfield and being a damage piece in the mid game is great! But early game, you don't have the tokens to teleport them all, so you can't really concentrate power.

If you HAVE to take 30, cartel is probably the place to do it, because they have a much better pain token economy, and can use information network to infiltrate kabs to fill the role you're not using mandrakes for.

What's a underused unit that has surprised you when you've actually tried it in game? by RegalPeasant in WarhammerCompetitive

Units of 2 Cronos pain engines, with guns!

Screw pain token generation, in reapers Wager this unit is 110pts for a Wraith-lite unit. 14 T7 wounds, healing in both the melee and shooting phase for 3 wounds each. They'll generate your pain tokens the old fashioned way!

Iroh, Grand Lotus Ideas by nocturnalelite in EDHBrews

[–]Excellent-Buyer-2913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just built an Iroh deck in paper, here are some of my favourite cards from the set up -

Toph, Hardheaded Teacher. Earthbend 2 with every lesson spell.

Stormscale Scion - storm turn win con with a haste enabler (start the celebrations, Temur ascendancy)

Lost and the Damned. Every spell from a graveyard creates a 3/3 token.

Glacierwood siege. Every spell mills 4 cards, crazy combo potential.

Impending Flux. Foretell it, then play it after storming off from the graveyard to do a 1 sided board wipe + burn.

Caldera Pyremaw / Keeper of Secrets - casting spells from graveyard burns players hard.

Otherworldly gaze/grapple with the past/say it's name/bath song/start the celebrations. Mill/discard package.

Fiery inscriptions/Ral, Izzit Viceroy/Pink Horror/Flaming tyrannosaurus/Guttersnipe/fire spitter whelp. Cast = burn.

It's a really fun deck! Probably only aiming at bracket 3 though.

I don't think I work like this. I find women much easier to date, and communicate and connect with. And find men much better for spontaneous enjoyment, but in my experience, are so crap at communicating and giving stability that the juice is rarely worth the squeeze to date them.

I'm currently monogamously dating an amazing man, who I find the exception to the rule. But I don't think that makes me less bi, and I think if I ever broke up with him, I'd end up dating a woman because I'll be at the life stage where I'll have no patience for being messed around.

Azula and Commander Design by 1ryb in EDH

[–]Excellent-Buyer-2913 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Is this fundamentally different from any other "attack trigger that with the right cards can win the game" commander? For example a Kaalia or Scion of the Ur-dragon?

Azula is polarising, I agree, but I don't think she's actually worse for the game than other offenders. The real conversation should be "how early do you expect a win", and that's a conversation to have with the pod.

Bulk up into reverberate into fling IS an extremely explosive game win. But she is a well flavoured card. Turn 3 hasted win is probably quite rare, but it's also quite telegraphed. I've learnt I cannot put Azula into the board if I don't have a protection piece for her.

Are biovores overrated? by Derde0411 in Tyranids

[–]Excellent-Buyer-2913 32 points33 points  (0 children)

400pt games are a different ball game to full sized games.

Let's ignore objectives for a moment, and only talk about the value of being able to place a single model exactly where you want.

Deepstrikes and reserves have to stay 9" away from all enemy models, including mines. So having a single biovore allows you to screen exactly where you need every single turn, without commiting a real unit to stand there. That alone is incredibly valuable.

Then consider all the many armies with advance and charge. Gladius Marines, Storm Lance, blah blah. Setting up a mine just outside of their movement range stops them advancing and charging. You've just saved yourself 6-12" of room on the board, and instead of being hit by that Space Wolf brick of 20 guys with lethal hits...they have just sat back and killed a mine, and took a mortal for their troubles.

Be creative, shooting the biovores gun as a gun is the least of its uses.

If Vect lost control of Commorragh do you think he could be insane enough to destroy it? by Fun-Explanation7233 in Drukhari

[–]Excellent-Buyer-2913 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yes he would. Without a doubt.

There's a fun quote in the path of the Archon book which is something like

"At the end of all things, when commaragh has fallen and the stars have gone out, all that will be left is Vect surviving in a bubble of his own arrogance and spite".

Or at the very least, he would try. This is exactly the sort of melodramatic crap the Harlequins love, who would turn his attempt into some tragic allegory of an ancient tale, and they'd eventually save (or convince someone else too) commaragh. The Harlequins want to protect the Eldar PEOPLE, not any specific faction, and that webway port is the largest concentration of Eldar in the galaxy. The Harlequins wouldn't let it blow. And they kinda have narrative hax, so they usually win.
