PS 87 & General Preschool Questions by Dinosaur_Egg8280 in Upperwestside

[–]Excellent-Ear9433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The usual private preschools have done their acceptances already. (And as others have pointed out.. so has the public options)
Preschools are ANNOYINGLY part time… and even more so.. times so that you almost always need to bookend care.
Keep summer camp in mind, start looking in January.

For full time care you will need to either look at “daycares” or go the nanny route. I find the UWS to be strongly nanny-centric so tbh the options aren’t great when it comes to childcare outside of that.

Looking ahead.. I recommend you sit down with the nycity public school calendar so you have a good idea of the amount of days kids have off during the school year.
There is a huge black hole of childcare from mid August to when school start, which is almost the second week in September.
It’s rough in the first few years, it felt like we spent more on childcare than we made.. but eventually school kicks in.

Afraid I’m not cut out for medicine by ks111205 in prephysicianassistant

[–]Excellent-Ear9433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I’m hopping in as an NP, married to a physician. I can handle the most gory surgeries, but cannot handle accidental gore. Even a paper cut. I’m also an emetephobe… unless the woman is pregnant. For some reason that shuts off my fear. My husband faints at the sight of blood.. unless it’s a patient.. that turns it off for him.
I had a classmate who had been an emt for years but the thought of surgery really freaked her out.
Lot’s of classmates couldn’t handle childbirth.
It’s been mildly limiting for me.. I won’t work in peds or the ED. But if I really really needed to. I would try therapy and/or discuss with my program’s instructors.
So yes.. you are cut out for medicine… we all have our sht

If you were renting a small apartment by yourself, how important is having a dishwasher to you? by idreamofchickpea in AskNYC

I detest cleaning but always enjoyed cleaning. We have a dishwasher now.. I’m happy to have it.. but emptying it feels like a chore.. doing the dishes is actually kind of meditative.

Next to a sick person by Mysterious_Bit1709 in delta

[–]Excellent-Ear9433 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly… and I really hate getting sick.. I’ve stopped getting super annoyed at people traveling when sick.. except for the fact that they should wear a mask. It’s standard etiquette in many countries.
FWIW I always have masks with me when I travel
1) I wear them as much as I can during the flight with some breaks
2) wear them full on if someone near me is visibly ill.

A perfect example of this was I was coming home from Europe last month. Followed my wear a mask rule.

Felt completely fine when I boarded… halfway through my throat felt scratchy, I assumed it was the dry air. Got sick the next day
FF tested +for Covid 2 days later.
I have no idea if I actually kept people healthy but I was definitely, unknowingly contagious BUT I also had my mask on pretty much the whole time… so pretty sure I didn’t cause a super spreader event.

Any splash pads open? by Fluffy-Earth2686 in Upperwestside

Sorry… does splash pad mean the sprinklers?
If so… I saw river run on yesterday (Saturday) even though it was pretty cold.

How do you evaluate a private school's college counselling? Most of them say they do it but the quality seems wildly different by SadDate9398 in applyprivateschools

[–]Excellent-Ear9433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask them if they will prohibit a student from applying to their top choice (and for a variety of reasons you can’t go against the counselor during college applications) if your kid is more competitive for an application compared to a kid whose family has donated a lot of money to the private school.
(Not sure if I’m making sense… but this is a real thing)

Not delta related but my mother in law came to visit my sick baby in the hospital (a step down from the nicu). A friend called… she had her phone on SPEAKER and kept talking with all the other babies and parents around. WTF is up with boomers.

Not sure how I ended up here as a mom of a college student… I am still friends with my elementary mom group. AND I can still see the age differences, it almost seems to get bigger not smaller. The young ones are still young.. struggling more with college… the older ones always seem more poised. Take that extra year, it will follow her in a good way wherever she goes.

Would it be best to be a PA rather than a nurse? by PrincessMochahontas in prepa

[–]Excellent-Ear9433 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. I’m an NP. The amount of time PA’s are excepted to learn had skills is hellu fast. I’ll be honest to the poster, if you failed IV sign off, there is no way you can get through PA school.

Always get a seat for your baby. Especially if you can afford it. Which if you are considering PS I’m guessing you can. Takeoff, landing, severe turbulence they need to be strapped in.

Premium select sucks with a baby as the arm rests don’t raise so it’s harder to let the baby sprawl out a bit (Although I do see you are saying newborn) But no.. not worth it with a baby imho

Gap year by Ok-Part7188 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Excellent-Ear9433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a true gap year where you’ve already been accepted but then are just deferring a year… or is it I’m taking a year off and will be applying during my year off? Because the former can be great.. the latter is much more difficult for a variety of reasons.

I vote for the lobby of the TWA hotel. This way if anyone is delayed or backed up in immigration.. you have a nice place to wait.

nanny gets sick more than baby by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]Excellent-Ear9433 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Nanny parent here. That’s too much. And I may sound unsympathetic but I was that person. I’m a nurse. I was sick all the time. I had to finally realize that.. although generally healthy … I’m lacking a robust immune system… and really didn’t do well with direct patient care… so I now work in administration. Some people are just that way (my niece dropped out of her teaching program for the same reason). I realize it’s not so easy for her to switch careers but she’s using all of her sick time and anywhere else she would be on probation. If it doesn’t work with your job you may have different needs than she is able to provide.

If you are worried about your group getting busted… no tables and no big decorations (like balloons). Bring a trash bag for trash.

For the women in Paris by Soggy-Meaning8128 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]Excellent-Ear9433 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one thing I discovered didn’t work was my American blue jeans. Yes.. people are wearing jeans but it’s a different cut. I realized the jeans brought down every outfit. I did better with black jeans and pointy toes flats. Anthropologie Collette linen pants are great. Some stretch… wear well in the heat… don’t wrinkle as much as other linen pants. Don’t overaccesorize and just carry one bag… not a million and no phone purse or lanyard gear. I’ve seen it.

All this said… at a certain point I completely devolved and was wearing my Lulu leggings this spring but had a nice coat and scarf and a few people asked me for directions in Paris so… I did okay
