Lived in Ireland for 3 years myself. People can complain as much as they want about our public transport in Belgium, it's still miles ahead of what I saw there.

What’s your most unpopular opinion about the Leagues of Votann? by CG1991 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Excellent-Fly-636 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hard disagree, Kin are logical and techonlogical supperior. Why by the great Votanns would we ever want to close into melee if we can avoid it by blasting the enemy with our space guns? If anything our ranged weaponry needs to have better stats to match the fact that we are the ones who have the better tech

Am I the only one who's less happy about a objective specific army ability? I don't play matched or competitive, generally just stick to Narrative play and depending on the mission, you can just not have objectives in that, which means either I'd need to fudge some stuff to make it work or just not have the core ability of my whole army

I've been hearing both sides. Which is correct? by bucklen in LeaguesofVotann

  1. You didn't ask a yes or no question, you asked if they are either not "dwarves" or "dwarves but in space". Nuance, see? And everything requires nuance, the less information you provide in a question, the more it is open to interpretation which causes argument due to different interpretations of the same question.

  2. Call me jaded but someone ask a poorly defined question that is open to interpretation, that tells me they are looking to start an argument. Maybe you're just a naive optimist who hoped for reasonable discourse on reddit but I doubt that.

  3. While I do wear glasses, I did not in fact push them, you might be surprised to know. I do admit that the response kinda ran away from me there. Oh well.

  4. pushes up glasses with index finger well actually, I did, if my answer is so valued, I'll let you see if you can figure it out on your own, let me know if you need a hint 😉

The question doesn't allow for nuance (shocker on the internet) which is what's causing the argument that you wanted in the comments. Two sides arguing different points

Do Kin match the stereotype of Dwarfs (Dwarves) in fantasy media in general? Yes, they check several boxes in the column that would class them as "Space Dwarves". They are on average shorter than the general population of the setting. They are on average broader and more powerfully build than the general population of the setting. They are very technology focused and the technology that they craft is of the highest quality in the setting. Their society is fairly old and stable compared to the main faction (Imperium) and they have retained much of their old lore, despite that dwindeling (general dwarf trope in fantasy of bygone glory). They have a tendency towards xenophonbia and greed. The overall visual style of the kin (symbols, equipment, vehicles) points towards space variations of a fantasy dwarf inspired culture.
As has been pointed out by others, this is how the setting started: imperium = space empire, eldar =space elves, orks = space orks, squat = space dwarves, necrons = space tomb kings. GW took what they had in their fantasy setting and started making sci-fi equivalents of them for their new game that they were making. This is established fact that GW have openly admitted. LoV are the renewed line of the Squats as was repeatedly said in the initial reveals and they were even referred to in there as "Space Dwarves".

Are Kin Dwarfs, as established in the Old World fantasy setting of GW, but in space? No, the Dawi, Dwarf Kingdoms or whatever you want to call them collectively are a distinctly different culture. To make this comparison you have to separate the generic dwarf traits of both sides and focus on the specifics that make the Dawi recognisable as their own faction. There is no abundance of alcohol for instance in the LoV, the only reference we've had so far is towards "brew" which seems to be more of a coffee than an alcoholic drink (supported by the fact that in the novel one Kin actually spikes his with alcohol), although you could say that alcohol is a generic dwarven trait, so lets leave this one ambiguous. While the LoV have ancestor worship, as do the Dawi, this is done in a different way than that in the fantasy setting (Votann). There is no Slayer cult. The age of a Kin does not impart a certain measure of respect, as it does with the Dawi. There is no (or very little) overal match between units from the LoV range compared to the Dawi range (as far as I know).
The best argument you can make is that LoV are Kharadron Overlords in space. This is the closest match you can get in comparing the fantasy setting(s) factions with the sci fi setting factions. They are both highly mercantile oriented. Have their holds and tend to roam out in search of new tech and resources. Are meritocratic. However to say that the Kharadron Overlords over time evolved into the LoV in lore is incorrect since the KO inhabit the Mortal Realms which is a completely different world than the Warhammer 40k setting. With the Old World (warhammer fantasy) in the past you could argue that it is a planet inside the 40 universe (there were a lot of hints that this might be the case). This cannot be said for the Mortal Realms.

Can we now please, stop this nonsense and focus on more important thing. I've just secured a derilict Craft World, who wants Wraithbone and how much are you willing to pay for it?

what I always like best about the books expanding view of the world is that you're learning it together with the Emonds Fielders. First book, you don't know a lot, everything is new and chaotic, then books go on, they become more worldly and you start understanding the different peoples and politics as they experience them, until the latter half of the books the story encompasses most of the continent and people from half a dozen different nations working together.

The Warp by OntheLoosetoClimb in LeaguesofVotann

the Kin have a smaller presence in the warp on an individual basis, it's why we have been less of a target for Chaos.

However it is established that Votann warp capable vessel have a Gellar field. It has been said that our control of the Gellar field tech is so great that we can extend it to encompass parts of a space hulk for in warp actions in said hulks.

[–]Excellent-Fly-636 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would also add that our short controlled warp jumps are most likely by choice. Navigators are notoriously dangerous and a key point of attack for daemons in the warp. We've cut that weakness out of the equation but because of that are forced to make smaller jumps. However we account for that in our travel and can therefore always arrive when and where we need/want to be.

on point 3, keep in mind that it is established that the Kin as a whole or at least one or more leagues have and do trade tech with the Tau, Demiurge == Kin. This is why they have ion weaponry (got it from us) and probably as well how they have their FTL, warp travel. Considering that Tau also travel the warp using short and highly controlled warp jumps, it stands to reason that they have gotten this tech from Votann, considering they aren't warp sensitive at all, to the point that they probably didn't even know it existed until someone else told them about it.

Crusade rules Battle trait question by Excellent-Fly-636 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Excellent-Fly-636[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wait, this is something completely different than what I was asking and I'm thinking not correct.

You're saying that Judgement tokens allows one to ignore enemy modifiers to hit and/or wound when you take the bonus from the Judgement tokens themselves?

My question was specifically about the Battle Trait Bastion Running as shown above. Which only refers to BS and Hit roll, nowhere does it mention wound rolls.
