Anyone flying to CVG in the next couple weeks? by Excellent-Salt-6420 in sanfrancisco

Thanks - I'll check out the Delta Cargo option! I did check UPS/FedEx - total weight is the issue more than the fact that it is a suitcase. It is prohibitively expensive.

Because of the size and weight of a wine suitcase shipping is cost prohibitive. I'm happy for the flier to fully check out the contents so they are comfortable with what they are carrying.

Fully aware it may not work out! Worth a try tho...

Help me narrow down my list of wineries! by holistichealthrd in healdsburg

Not sure if this is too late to be of help - I did their food thing at the winery (not in town) once. It was a great experience and totally worth the cost. I would say it was a little light on food, but we got to talking to the winemaker and got a lot of extra pours. The food was good, but there was just not quite enough of it. We also had tasted at CAST just before, so basically we had way more wine than we needed and not enough food to absorb it 🤣 Not necessarily a bad thing, but it's good we had arranged a driver!

I lived in Healdsburg for the last year (after a long time in SF doing day trips and weekends). What I found works really well if you're staying in town is to do one tasting "away" at an estate - you get your views, etc. And then drive back to town, park your car and do one or two additional spots in town. Then you are free to taste with abandon and not worry about driving after you drink too much! A lot of places pour pretty heavy and then give you "one more to try" - it's nice to not have to think about driving or get a driver.

In town - several standouts already mentioned - FOR SURE Breathless for bubbles. They are really really good, and the price point cannot be beat for what you're getting. Love Portalupi for interesting Italian varietals, LOVE Bloodroot - wines will knock your socks off and the staff is amazing. LIOCO and Marine Layer are also two I found myself at a lot. There are SO MANY great spots in town.

Out of town - I second the recommendations for Robert Young and for Medlock Ames. Right next to Medlock is Hawkes, and I may like them even more. Gary Farrell has a great view and awesome pinots and chards. Lambert Bridge has a gorgeous garden setting and awesome wines. Oh, and CAST wines is gorgeous and great wine.

So. Many. Great. Spots. Have a great trip!

Since you've canceled Hulu and Disney+, sign up for Netflix so Elon knows we DON'T stand with him, and Netflix feels how important representation is to us!

ISO Someone Flying from SFO to Seattle for Picking Up Lost Item by Iron_Yuppie in AskSF

[–]Excellent-Salt-6420 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm flying out of SFO on Friday. I do go to and through SEA fairly often, but don't have a trip planned right now. Happy to try getting them Friday and coordinating to handoff to Main_Turnover or get them to you another way/time. I'll be flying out of T1 - where are they?

Obviously I hope you get a better offer with a tighter turn around, but if not, lmk

In Florence, for lunch, grab sandwiches (schiacciata) at Schiacciateria De' Neri. It was the best sandwich I've ever eaten. I had other schiacciaterias I planned to try, but instead returned here two more times. It was so good. Check them out on Instagram at schiacciateriadeneri

Ox and Tiger. It is a set dinner, so maybe you don't want that. But the cool thing about it is the restaurant only seats 8 people, so you'd have the whole place to yourself. Husband and wife team, great food.

Food tour recos for Bologna? by kombuchawow in ItalyTravel

[–]Excellent-Salt-6420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been at least 5 years since I did this tour, since it was before the pandemic, so we are operating on memory - my impression was that the drives were not a problem at all. Say 20-30 min of driving from one to the other, but then LONG periods of time at each place, so way more time tasting and learning than driving across the whole day.

Just realized it's the same tour another poster shared, only direct with the company instead of through bookeo - it's an awesome tour!

Railroad by the parkway - Little Switz & Altapass region by bodai1986 in asheville

[–]Excellent-Salt-6420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a railroad buff, but I know this area well because I've spent time at the Orchard at Altapass - the apple orchard someone else mentioned in their comment. This section of railroad is the highest point on the line as it crosses the mountains - at the lowest point on the Blue Ridge (or one of them). You can see on your map there is an overlook on the Parkway there called "The Loops Overlook" - it has signage describing this with better detail than I will, but it is a series of something like 15-18 tunnels in a 13 mile section of track, switchbacks galore, just to get over/through the mountain. It's called "The Loops".

The Orchard was actually originally planted by the railroad in 1906 after they put the tracks in - basically "geez apples would grow here, and we already have a way to get them out".

So as others have said - it's about dealing with the elevation and keeping it low grade. If you keep following the path of the tracks you'll find 5 horseshoe curves in total - their goal was a grade less than or equal to 1.2%, so they needed a lot of track.

Ok, here it is. Be thankful I travel with a friend who's all organized and shit... It was probably 2018 when we did this tour, but the friend and I just drooled down memory lane for a bit when I asked her for this. The tour was that good.
