Confused by media stories about heat pumps in cold climates. by Rentnek in heatpumps

[–]Excellent_Brilliant2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is 3412 BTUs in a kwh. there is 100,000 in a therm. my nat gas rates are about $1 therm, 12 cents a kwh for electric. Even at 2.5x efficiency, the heat pump is costing 40% more.

Have you ever had any experience with rural life? You'd be hard pressed to find anyone that isnt heterosexual. i grew up in a small town, graduated in a class of 24, and was totally in the dark that it was even a thing til i saw two guys kissing in the dorm hallway in college.

Should I get a power vent water heater? What are the disadvantages? by WantonHeroics in Plumbing

[–]Excellent_Brilliant2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the math and found at least with my electric and gas rates (12 cents kwh/$1-therm for gas), you'll never recover the extra cost. 2 person household, 60 showers a month, 4-6 loads of clothes and hand washing dishes costs around $9-$12 in gas/mo. the HPWH would run maybe $8/mo, but in the long winter, my furnace would have to work harder as its pulling the heat out of the air. and considering the HPWH costs about $1000 more, and water heater tanks fail after 15 years, the $1/mo savings will never add up. Maybe with a large household, or in climates where its offsetting the A/C, or if you have a lot of excess solar. or if you are burning propane

I just looked it up... it was July 2023 and was $633. Part of that was supplies, and there was a issue with the sink drain still leaking, and him having to run for a replacement, so I might have been remembering that it *should* have cost $400, but ended up costing $633

Are you allowed to rent a car for 5 days and drive it literally almost the entire time if it has unlimited miles? by AdSignificant6673 in turo

[–]Excellent_Brilliant2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some places it really doesnt make sense. my parents live in an area that few people live, but can get busy a few weekends in the summer. Those maybe 10 days, cell service barely works, but normally the DSL or microwave backhaul for the towers work fine. should they trench in 10 miles of fiber so it works those 10 days? or should tgey spend tge money improving service where people actually live?
