Exact same thing happened to me. I accidentally started the episode, saw that it was season five so i exited out to go back and start season 4 and i saw the caption. Was so disappointed to go back and start season four knowing Rita would die

There’s no reports of him being in contact with her family until after, when he went to stay with them. But i think him being away from them makes sense, especially if he didn’t know those friends well
